Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 619 - 609: Zombie 4
"Got separated, huh."
The man glanced at Moira Lynch. Noticing her clothes were spotless and that she was fair-skinned and clean—he could even make out traces of makeup—he asked, "Do you have a superpower?"
"Yes," James Shaw answered before she could. "She has a Healing Ability."
The registration officer’s eyes widened the moment he heard that. He stared at Moira Lynch. "A Healing Power? Really?"
Moira then demonstrated her ability on the spot.
After watching Moira heal a survivor’s wound in the blink of an eye, the man’s attitude did a complete one-eighty.
The rest of the process was a breeze.
Once they were inside the survivor base, James Shaw remarked, "I never knew those guys could be so efficient."
His comment was clearly sarcastic, but it was also the truth.
Every survivor returning from the outside undergoes a very strict inspection. Even a single scratch could mean they’re infected with the zombie virus.
If such a hidden danger were allowed into the survivor base, the resulting damage and loss of life would be incalculable.
One mistake could cause the entire base to go up in flames.
James Shaw and his team needed to report their mission, so they headed to the mission hall. Seeing this, Moira followed along to take care of her own housing situation.
James Shaw had offered to let Moira stay with them, but she’d refused, saying she wasn’t used to living with so many people.
James Shaw understood what she meant. He looked like he wanted to say something but held his tongue. ’On second thought,’ he realized, ’with Moira’s talent as a Healing Superpower User, she could easily secure a comfortable life just by treating people every day.’
Compared to that, being crammed into a house with them and having to go out on missions to face unknown dangers from time to time was a much worse deal.
So, after a brief moment of disappointment, James Shaw came to accept Moira’s decision.
’After all, Moira didn’t really owe them anything.’
’They might have brought her to the survivor base, but she had healed their team’s wounded members in return.’
’Besides, they had a bit of a friendly relationship with Moira, unlike others. Being on good terms with someone who had a Healing Power was a good thing for their Power Squad.’
It was only when she was registering her identity at the mission hall that Moira realized just how well this base treated Healing Superpower Users.
Not only did they give you a hundred points upfront, but they also provided free housing.
Of course, these benefits came with strings attached. The Superpower User was required to help treat the base’s soldiers, who had priority for healing.
This healing wasn’t free, however. As for the pricing, that was up to the Superpower User.
A young woman with short hair was handling the registration.
When she saw that Moira’s superpower was healing, the woman instantly became incredibly enthusiastic.
Once her registration was complete, Moira said goodbye to James Shaw and, key in hand, went to check out her new home.
James Shaw also gave her some food, saying that since they found it together, she was entitled to a share.
Moira didn’t refuse.
’After all, food was too precious these days. Refusing would just seem insincere.’
After leaving the mission hall, she found a car waiting for her outside.
’They even have a private car service. How considerate.’
Moira’s opinion of the base improved even more.
’I’ll observe a while longer. If the leaders of this base are decent, maybe I can work with them.’
The car started moving slowly. As Moira sat inside, she saw construction projects flashing past the window.
The people on the roadside looked grimy and worn, but they had smiles on their faces. The entire base seemed to be thriving.
The sense of stability made Moira relax.
Chatting with the driver, Moira learned that the base was called Dawnlight Base and was divided into two sections: The Outer City and The Inner City.
The Inner City was mostly home to soldiers and their families, along with some powerful Power Squads. The Dawnlight Base command center was also there.
Everyone else could only live and operate in The Outer City.
Soon, the car stopped in front of a small, detached villa.
"Miss Lynn, this place is yours from now on. As long as you remain at Dawnlight Base, this house will be your personal property. Here is the deed."
The tall driver who brought her here glanced at Moira cautiously.
She was a Healing Superpower User, after all—someone he absolutely could not afford to offend.
Moira took a moment to size up the small villa. It looked a little small overall.
The villa had two floors, each a little over ninety square meters. Small, but it had everything one could need. The living room was right inside the entrance.
The only problem was that the house clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a long time; a layer of dust covered everything.
Unable to read Moira’s expression, the driver spoke up cautiously. "This villa may be a little small, but it’s one of the best-preserved buildings in The Inner City. It’s more than enough space for one person. As for the cleaning, you can hire someone if you don’t want to do it yourself."
"Besides, patrol teams monitor the area day and night, so it’s very safe."
A lot of people wanted this house before, but the rent was too high for most. Some Power Squads could afford it, but it was too small for a whole team.
And for the same rent, they could get a much bigger villa, so why would they squeeze in here?
Moira pretended to rummage through her backpack, but she was actually retrieving an opened pack of cigarettes from her Space Button.
The moment he saw the cigarettes, the driver was captivated. He stared at the pack without blinking, his eyes filled with longing.
Moira smiled faintly. His yellowed teeth and fingernails told her he was a heavy smoker.
"Hey, driver. I’m new in town. I was hoping you could tell me about Dawnlight Base. This pack of smokes is for your trouble."
"Sure, no problem!"
The driver agreed without a moment’s hesitation.
Cigarettes were a rare commodity these days. After all, who thinks to grab a carton when they’re fleeing for their life?
As a man who’d been smoking for twenty years, no one understood that craving better than he did.
For the next while, he answered every question Moira asked. However, he was just a driver, so what he knew was quite limited.
’But Moira’s real goal wasn’t to get answers right now. It was to establish a suitable source for future information.’
