Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 190: Deserted Island Survival 14
After checking on the Black Wolf’s condition, Moira Lynch took a prepared wild boar’s hind leg out of her space, then got into the RV to rest.
What she didn’t notice was that after she turned away, the Black Wolf, which had its eyes closed, slowly opened them.
It watched Moira Lynch’s departing figure, glanced at the prey placed before it, and closed its eyes again.
The water tank was about a third full. Moira Lynch decided to go to the river to get fresh water tomorrow.
She planned to take a good shower today. After these last few days in the rainforest, she felt like she was constantly damp.
Half an hour later, Moira Lynch emerged from the bathroom, feeling refreshed.
She blow-dried her hair and tied it up. After washing and drying her clothes, she got dressed and finally began her training.
"Oh, right. Patience, what breed is that Black Wolf?" Moira Lynch asked suddenly.
[Battle Wolf: Large, intelligent, powerful in combat, and skilled in teamwork.]
Then, Patience showed Moira Lynch a picture of a Battle Wolf, but...
"The Battle Wolves in the picture are all white. Why is the one I found black?"
[A mutated variant with a one in one hundred thousand chance of appearing. Black Battle Wolves are considered omens of misfortune by their packs and are abandoned at birth. Therefore, very few Black Battle Wolves survive to adulthood.]
Moira Lynch’s mouth fell slightly open. "So that’s how it is. In other words, this Black Wolf has no packmates."
While she felt a bit of pity for the Black Wolf, Moira Lynch also felt a flicker of secret delight.
Wolves are pack animals. If this Black Wolf had other packmates, trying to lure it away would have been unnecessarily difficult.
But if it was all alone, things would be much easier.
[According to the scan, the Battle Wolf outside is an extremely rare mutant and is in its sub-adult stage.]
’A sub-adult, meaning it’s not yet fully grown.’
’The Black Wolf is already quite large. I wonder if it will get even bigger when it reaches adulthood.’
The next day, Moira Lynch left the RV early and first checked on the Black Wolf’s condition.
Thanks to the Healing Device and a night’s rest, the Black Wolf’s condition was clearly much better than yesterday.
Moreover, the wild boar’s hind leg she had left in front of it yesterday was gone. It was obvious the Black Wolf had eaten it.
For breakfast, she had fish and dough drop soup.
While preparing breakfast, Moira Lynch brought another boar’s hind leg to the Black Wolf.
"I know you’re awake, and that you can hear what I’m saying."
As she finished speaking, the Black Wolf’s ears twitched. It then slowly opened its eyes, a pair of golden orbs as beautiful as gemstones.
The Black Wolf stared intently at Moira Lynch, as if to ask, ’What do you want?’
Seeing this, Moira Lynch placed the boar’s hind leg in front of the Black Wolf and said with a smile, "Well, I’m running out of water and need to find a source. Are you going to walk with me, or should I take you with me?"
"Awoo?"
’What’s the difference?’
"Of course there’s a difference. If you walk with me, we have to leave soon, and it’s a pretty long way. I’m worried your injuries won’t hold up," Moira Lynch said, her expression showing she was thinking of its best interests.
"Awoo?"
’Then how would you take me?’
As if to say this, the Black Wolf glanced at Moira Lynch’s small frame. ’This human probably can’t even lift one of my legs.’
Realizing she was being underestimated, Moira Lynch didn’t say another word and directly pulled it into her space.
Since she had decided to recruit the Black Wolf as her muscle, Moira Lynch couldn’t afford to hide her abilities. After all, in the natural world, the strong have always commanded respect.
Moira Lynch didn’t keep the Black Wolf in her space for long, releasing it again a moment later.
The scene before its eyes changed again. The Black Wolf was startled, and its gaze toward Moira Lynch was now filled with deep meaning.
"This is the first time I’ve seen a Space System Talent who could open up such a large space."
Hearing this, Moira Lynch said nothing. She was indeed considered a Space System Talent, but she hadn’t been the one to create this space.
However, she did know that Space System Talents could create their own spaces.
Previously, because the Spiritual System aspect of her talent was more dominant, her space abilities were only secondary, so she had never succeeded. But since her talent had improved, this situation had changed drastically. ’Maybe I can try again.’
But now was not the time to be thinking about such things.
"Have you made your decision?" Moira Lynch asked.
The Black Wolf didn’t answer her. Instead, it asked, "Humans are very cunning creatures who never do anything without a reason. What’s your motive for doing this?"
Moira Lynch: ...’Does it have to be so perceptive?’
Seeing this, Moira Lynch had originally planned to make up an excuse, but she couldn’t just come out and say, "The reason I’m being nice to you is because I’m after your body... to be my muscle."
However, after meeting the Black Wolf’s gaze, she suddenly changed her mind. ’One lie requires countless more to cover it up.’ So she decided to tell the truth. "I’ve taken a liking to you."
Hearing this, the Black Wolf stumbled back, its eyes wide with shock. It shook its head vehemently and refused, "Our species are different! It’s impossible!"
Moira Lynch: ...
Realizing her words had caused a misunderstanding, Moira Lynch quickly explained, "What are you thinking? I meant I’ve taken a liking to your combat ability! I want to hire you as my bodyguard. I’ve read up on your kind—a one-in-a-hundred-thousand mutant, cast out by your pack since birth. I don’t know how you survived, but it must have been tough. Why not come with me?"
The Black Wolf wasn’t angry after hearing Moira Lynch’s explanation. Instead, it asked with unusual calmness, "What’s in it for me if I follow you?"
"Room and board are covered," Moira Lynch said with a blink.
The Black Wolf shook its head. "That’s not enough. How about this: you help me retrieve something. If you succeed, not only will I go with you, but I’ll also willingly sign a Subordinate Contract with you. How about it?"
At that moment, the Black Wolf was like a creepy old man using candy to lure a child.
However, Moira Lynch knew the Black Wolf was just a sub-adult, theoretically even younger than her.
"Alright," Moira Lynch agreed readily.
’No matter what, I’ll just agree first and figure it out later.’
"Then it’s a deal. Pull me into your space. My injuries are slowing me down."
With that, the Black Wolf crossed its paws, rested its head on them, and closed its eyes, feigning sleep.
"By the way, you’d better leave quickly. There are people a thousand meters away heading in this direction," the Black Wolf added in a lazy tone, then fell silent.
Hearing this, Moira Lynch was startled and quickly released her spiritual power to investigate.
Sure enough, she discovered a group of people over a thousand meters away.
’But how did the Black Wolf know they were coming for her?’
Normally, Moira Lynch wouldn’t have given it a second thought; after all, they were still more than a thousand meters away.
