Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 191: Deserted Island Survival 15
But given the Black Wolf’s imposing size, Moira Lynch decided it was better to be safe than sorry. She packed up and prepared to leave.
You could never be too careful.
After stowing the RV and everything else in her space, Moira Lynch looked back at the place she had stayed for a few days. ’I guess I won’t be coming back here.’
After pulling the Black Wolf into her space as well, Moira Lynch left the area and headed toward a freshwater stream.
"By the way," Moira Lynch asked, "you said I had to get something for you. What is it?"
"It’s not time yet," the Black Wolf replied. "I’ll tell you in a couple of days."
"Alright."
Moira Lynch didn’t press the issue. The Black Wolf was the one who needed her, after all. ’Even if he doesn’t tell me now, he’ll have to eventually,’ she thought. ’He’s stuck in my space, anyway.’
Moira took care of her meals on the road.
Not long after she left, a group of people found the place, just as she’d expected.
Gazing at the empty cave, the leader’s expression soured. "Looks like we were a step too slow."
He then turned to a man beside him, one as thin as a reed, and asked, "Can you tell which way they went?"
The skinny man twitched his nose. After a moment, he shook his head. "No can do, Boss. They’ve been gone for a while now. The scent has all but disappeared."
Just then, an excited shout came from nearby. "Water! Boss, it’s water!"
The words were barely out of his mouth before everyone scrambled madly toward the voice.
In the days since the game began, they hadn’t starved, but water was exceptionally scarce.
For the past few days, their only source of hydration had been eating wild fruits with high water content.
But most of those fruits were sour and astringent; tasty ones were few and far between. Eating one was like opening a blind box.
So, when they saw water seeping from a crack in the rocks, excitement flashed across their faces. But no one made a rash move.
The leader turned to the same skinny man. "You take the first drink."
The man didn’t dare disobey. He licked his dry, cracked lips, cupped the water in his hands, shut his eyes, and drank it all down as if facing his own execution.
Perhaps because he had gone so long without a proper drink, the man failed to notice anything wrong with the water. On the contrary, like a parched field after a long-awaited rain, a feeling of relief washed over him.
Seeing that he suffered no ill effects after drinking, the others knew the water wasn’t poisoned.
They shoved the man aside and scrambled over one another to drink.
This wasn’t freshwater, but seawater that had been filtered over and over. Although the salt content was very low, it was still seawater.
Even if someone noticed something was off, they would just assume this was what the water on the island tasted like.
Meanwhile, after walking for several hours straight, Moira Lynch finally reached the place where she had first arrived.
She hadn’t been here for a few days, and now this side of the island was already seeing snow. A thin layer covered the ground.
Moira Lynch checked her clothing and tucked her hair securely under her hat.
The instant she crossed the dividing line, a cold wind hit her. She exhaled, and her breath instantly plumed into a white cloud.
Moira Lynch glanced at her exposed skin, which was paling at a visible rate.
’It’s not so bad. Not as cold as on Glacius,’ Moira Lynch thought optimistically.
In fact, she felt more at ease in this environment than she had in the rainforest.
There were animal tracks on the ground, and by following them, she easily found the freshwater river.
By now, a layer of ice had formed on the river’s surface, but it didn’t look very thick.
Moira Lynch picked up a nearby stone and tossed it onto the ice. It easily sent a web of cracks across the surface.
Seeing this, Moira instantly abandoned any thought of walking on the ice.
After filling her water tank, she caught a large number of fish and stored them in her space. After all, it wasn’t just her she had to feed anymore.
As for the pre-packaged food in her space, she wasn’t sure if the game system would consider it a foul if the Black Wolf ate it. ’Better not to risk it.’
Just as Moira Lynch was preparing to leave, having finished her tasks, the Black Wolf’s voice echoed in her mind before she’d even gone far.
She wasn’t sure how he did it, but he was somehow able to communicate with her via her spiritual power.
"A kilometer to the east, there’s a cave. A Titanbear lives inside. Go kill it."
Moira was speechless. ’Do you hear yourself right now?’
’A Titanbear... The name alone sounds like trouble, and you want me to kill it? You’ve got to be kidding me.’
Just then, Patience helpfully provided information on the Titanbear.
[Titanbear: Possesses a powerful physique, immense strength, and is extremely territorial.
P.S. You can safely approach it during the winter, but be careful not to wake it. A Titanbear roused from hibernation will immediately enter a berserk state.]
’Got it. So it has a nasty temper when it’s woken up.’
Looking at the snowy weather, she figured the Titanbear should be hibernating.
"Can I ask why I have to do this?" Moira asked.
’It can’t be that the Black Wolf has a grudge against the Titanbear and wants to use me to get his revenge, right?’
"I do have a grudge against it," the Black Wolf admitted with surprising frankness. "But that’s not important. What’s important is that if you want to get the item I mentioned, you need the Titanbear’s hide. Otherwise, the task will become much more difficult, and you could even lose your life."
The mention of mortal danger immediately got Moira Lynch’s full attention. After all, nothing was more important than her own life.
Still, she didn’t act rashly. She began to slowly extend her spiritual power in the direction the Black Wolf had indicated.
After a few minutes, she located the cave entrance at the base of a large tree. Inside, a massive, stout bear was fast asleep.
’It’s this close.’
The cave was located near the very mountain Moira Lynch had climbed previously.
After a walk of about ten minutes, Moira Lynch arrived at the cave.
While still some distance away, she could already hear deafening snores.
’Making so much noise... This Titanbear must be the overlord of this region, confident that it’s safe even while hibernating.’
Staring at the Titanbear’s thick pelt, Moira Lynch asked, "What’s the plan? Does it have a weak spot for a one-hit kill?"
Patience had already warned that the Titanbear had a violent temper when woken, so a one-hit kill was the best approach.
"Let me out. I’ll do it."
"Okay."
Without a moment’s hesitation, Moira Lynch released the Black Wolf.
