After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter Twenty: The Aftermath and the Apex (Uncensored & Relentless)
The chopper's cabin vibrated with the violent, teeth-rattling thrum of the turbine engines, screaming through the upper atmosphere as they left the smoldering, burning ruins miles behind. The radioactive storm was finally tearing apart, bleeding harsh, pale streaks of silver dawn across the bruised eastern horizon.
Adrian knelt directly beside the metal medical bench, his heavy tactical jacket soaked in a dark, sticky mix of sweat and blood from his side, completely ignoring his own torn flesh. His dark, fierce eyes remained dead-locked on Mari.
The medic worked with brutal, clinical speed, cutting away the smoking, melted remnants of the copper cables and slapping thick, searing coats of white biosynthetic burn gel across Mari’s blistered, charred palms. Every pass of the instrument sent a blinding, involuntary spasm through Mari's frame, but she locked her teeth together so hard she drew fresh blood, refusing to give the pain the satisfaction of a scream.
"Tissue necrosis is absolute," the medic shouted over the deafening roar of the rotors, her face pale and grim beneath the harsh overhead light. "She burned straight down to the fucking dermis completing that live circuit. She’s going to need aggressive regenerative grafts, and she won't have full functional use of her hands for months—if ever."
"She's breathing," Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly uncompromising growl that brooked zero argument. "That's the only thing that fucking matters."
Mari forced her heavy eyelids open, wincing as a nauseating wave of shock rolled through her. She looked up at him through a sweat-drenched blur, a faint, defiant smirk touching her pale lips. "I told you... I didn't need you to carry me."
A rare, dangerous shadow of a smile flickered across Adrian's mouth. He reached out, his massive, calloused hand wrapping firmly around her uninjured forearm, his thumb tracing a slow, heavy circle against her skin. "You can scream at me about it later, you stubborn, reckless bastard. For now, shut your eyes and rest."
Across the cabin, Lena slammed her cracked tablet down onto a metal crate with a fierce grin, expelling a long, shaking breath. "The data packet just bypassed the final outer relays! It’s flooding every independent network across the grid right now! The corporation's firewall is completely turned to ash; their entire black-ops database, human trials, and black-site coordinates are out in the open for the whole world to see!"
Sera leaned back hard against the reinforced bulkhead, crossing her arms as the raw adrenaline finally began to ebb from her veins, though her eyes remained sharp as glass. "They're going to hunt us to the ends of the earth for this. Every corporate hit squad from here to the capital has a multi-million-credit bounty on our heads."
"Let them fucking try," Adrian snarled, his gaze shifting up from Mari to meet Sera's eyes, a lethal, absolute promise burning in his dark stare. "We survived the vertical drop, the drone swarm, and a live-wire burn. If they want us, they can crawl out of hell and try to take us."
Mari closed her eyes, letting the heavy, rhythmic roar of the chopper wash over her as the aircraft carried them deeper into the safety of the rising sun. The mission was over. The sky had been torn wide open, and the true war had officially begun.
