After the End: Mari's Second Life

Chapter Nineteen: The Extraction Point (Uncensored & Relentless)

The drainage tunnel violently narrowed, the stagnant air instantly mutating into a screaming, wind-whipped hurricane as they tore toward the exit. Ahead, a jagged circle of bruised, purple-gray storm sky ripped through the darkness—the mouth of the runoff pipe opening straight onto a sheer, deadly cliffside ledge overhanging a churning, black ocean.

And hovering right there, fighting the brutal, violent updrafts of the dying storm, was the extraction chopper. Its heavy twin rotors thrashed the air into a deafening, bone-rattling roar, casting blinding, strobing amber landing lights across the wet, treacherous concrete.

"There! The bird is waiting! Move, move, move!" Lena shrieked over the deafening rotor wash, pointing frantically as she sprinted ahead, her boots splashing wildly through inches of toxic runoff.

Sera hit the mouth of the pipe like a freight train, sliding to a brutal halt in the mud and firing a blinding burst of defensive frost into the air to signal the pilot. The chopper's heavy landing skid slammed down hard onto the slippery rock ledge, the cabin door flying open to reveal two heavily armed operatives waving them frantically inside.

"Get in! Now!" Sera yelled back over her shoulder, planting her feet and holding her ground as the downdraft threatened to hurl them straight off the cliffside.

Adrian bolted out of the dark maw of the tunnel carrying Mari, his heavy boots pounding violently against the wet stone. Every breath scorched his lungs like liquid fire, and the shrapnel wound in his side was leaking a steady, soaking stream of hot blood, but his iron grip never faltered for a fraction of a second. He clutched Mari flush against his chest, completely shielding her body from the hurricane-force gale.

"We're almost there!" Adrian roared down to her, his voice rough, desperate, and stripped bare. "Hold on, Mari—don't you dare let go!"

Mari’s eyelids fluttered, her body shivering in violent, uncontrolled shock from massive blood loss and agonizing nerve-shock, but she managed a fierce, defiant nod against his jacket.

With a final, explosive surge of sheer adrenaline, Adrian lunged up the wet incline and vaulted straight through the open cabin door of the chopper, slamming hard onto the reinforced metal floor with Mari still cradled securely in his massive arms.

Lena and Sera dove in right behind them, slamming the heavy armored hatch shut with a deafening CLANG just as a high-pitched, metallic shriek echoed viciously from the mouth of the drainage pipe below.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

A cascade of heavy tungsten rounds chewed savagely into the cliffside rock inches from the closing door, sending a blinding shower of white-hot sparks flying into the cabin.

"Punch it! Go, go, go, you son of a bitch!" Lena shrieked to the pilot, scrambling frantically to strap herself into a jump seat.

The chopper's turbine engines whined to a deafening, pitch-raising crescendo. With a violent, bone-crushing jolt that threw Adrian hard back against the bulkhead, the aircraft violently lifted off the ledge, tilting sharply into the stormy sky and banking hard away from the crumbling, burning facility below.

Inside the cabin, the glaring red emergency warnings faded into a steady, dim operational glow.

Adrian gently lowered Mari onto the metal medical bench, his large, calloused hands hovering over her ruined, smoking, charred palms as a medic rushed forward with trauma shears and high-grade antiseptic spray.

Adrian didn't budge an inch. He stayed right beside her, his dark eyes locked intensely onto her pale face, his fingers gently wrapping around her uninjured arm to anchor her to the living world.

Mari looked up at him through a hazy, pain-drenched blur, a faint, exhausted, bloody smirk touching the corner of her lips. "We... we actually fucking did it."

Adrian let out a ragged, fierce breath, his thumb brushing a streak of sweat and soot from her cheek. He pulled her close again, letting the deafening, triumphant roar of the chopper rotors drown out the world as they finally bled the dark behind them.
