After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter Eighteen: The Bleeding Dark (Uncensored & Relentless)
The emergency drop-chute was a sheer, vertical pipe of jagged, rusted corrugated steel, plunging fifty terrifying stories straight down into the rotting, pitch-black guts of the facility.
"Go! Move!" Sera screamed, wasting zero time. She grabbed the smoking rim and threw her body backward straight into the abyss, her combat boots screeching and throwing blinding showers of white-hot sparks against the metal walls as she braked her descent with brutal, controlled bursts of friction frost.
Lena scrambled in right behind her, shrieking as she dropped into the vertical tunnel like a stone, her ruggedized tablet clutched in a death-grip against her chest.
Adrian stood at the jagged lip of the drop, holding Mari tightly against his massive, armored frame. Her breathing was a shallow, frantic rattle, her ruined, charred hands pressed uselessly against his coat, smearing thick, dark blood across his chest.
"I'm dropping with you," Adrian growled, his muscles bunching like coiled steel as he positioned his heavy frame. "Hold onto me with every goddamn ounce you've got left."
"I can't..." Mari gasped, her voice a shredded whisper against the screaming gale howling up the shaft. "My hands... I can't feel my fingers. I can't hold shit."
"I told you before," Adrian snarled, his dark eyes burning with fierce, unyielding, absolute possession. "I've got you."
With a brutal, explosive kick, Adrian stepped off the ledge into empty air, plunging down the black iron throat of the shaft like a falling anvil.
The wind roared upward in a deafening, supersonic shriek, tearing at their clothes and freezing their sweat instantly. Adrian wrapped his massive arms completely around Mari, pulling her flush against his chest, using his broad shoulders and thick leather jacket as a total human shield against the abrasive, screaming steel walls. Sparks showered around them like a vicious fireworks display as his boots dragged against the seam, violently fighting terminal velocity.
A white-hot flare of agony tore through Adrian's side where the earlier shrapnel graze ripped wide open, soaking his jacket in fresh, hot blood, but he didn't even blink. He locked his jaw until bone ground against bone, tightening his grip until his knuckles turned bloodless, absorbing every bone-jarring impact as they plummeted through the dark.
CRASH-THUD!
They slammed into the bottom of the chute, obliterating a rusted safety grate and tumbling violently out onto the wet, freezing, chemical-slick concrete of the subterranean drainage tunnels.
Adrian rolled over instantly, keeping Mari cradled safely against his body, coming up on one knee with his sidearm drawn in a sweeping, savage arc.
"Clear!" Sera yelled, her voice echoing down the damp, curving concrete corridor. She was kneeling a few meters away, her hands pulsing with pale, sub-zero frost, her chest heaving in the stagnant, sulfur-choked air. "We're in the old runoff level. Sector Nine is dead—no cameras, no automated sentries, nothing."
Lena scrambled up beside them, tapping furiously on her cracked, flickering tablet screen. "The extraction chopper is waiting at the end of this drainage pipe—three hundred meters east! But the network just pinged our descent! Automated hunter-killer drones are already dropping into the upper shafts. We have less than sixty fucking seconds before they flood this line!"
Adrian looked down at Mari. Her eyelids fluttered weakly, her pale face slick with cold sweat, the horrific, charred necrosis across her hands looking even more gruesome in the dim, pulsing red emergency lights of the tunnel.
"Can you stand?" Adrian demanded, his voice a low, urgent roar.
"No," Mari breathed, wincing as a wave of black nausea rolled through her. "My legs... they're completely gone. Nerves are fried."
Adrian didn't hesitate for a microsecond. He slung his rifle over his back and scooped Mari up into a bridal carry, hoisting her deadweight frame effortlessly into his massive arms as if she weighed nothing at all.
"Sera, clear the goddamn path!" Adrian roared, his eyes locked on the dark, winding tunnel ahead. "Lena, watch our fucking six! We move now!"
They broke into a brutal, lung-burning sprint through the freezing, toxic muck of the drainage pipe, racing against the approaching, high-pitched whine of mechanical death screaming down from the levels above, pushing hard toward the sliver of open air waiting at the end of the dark.
