After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter Seventeen: The Aftermath (Uncensored & Relentless)
The brilliant blue pillar of data violently imploded into the stratosphere, leaving behind a heavy, pulsing vacuum of silence that vibrated right through their teeth. Above them, the radioactive storm clouds tore open like a fresh wound, bleeding bruised purples and toxic indigos over the burning skeleton of the city.
Adrian dropped to his knees in the ice, dragging Mari flush against his massive chest. He shoved his body between her and the bitter, radioactive gale. Her head lolled heavily against his shoulder, her breathing a shallow, rattling gasp. The sickening stench of charred human meat and fried ozone choked the air around them. Her ruined, smoking hands hung limply at her sides, weeping black, cooked blood that soaked dark crimson patches straight through his tactical coat.
"Lena!" Adrian bellowed, his voice stripped raw, vibrating with primal panic. "The trauma pack! Now!"
Lena scrambled violently across the slick, blood-smeared deck, her fingers clawing frantically at the heavy tactical zipper of her pack. She ripped out a military-grade medical kit, her face deathly pale, eyes wide and bloodshot with adrenaline.
"Her nervous system took the full, unfiltered payload!" Lena shrieked over the howling wind, tossing the kit into Adrian's massive hands. "She shouldn't even have a heartbeat right now! The thermal and electrical necrosis on her hands is... fuck, Adrian, it's completely charred to the bone!"
Sera stood rigid at the edge of the roof, her hands still pulsing with faint, crystalline frost, her eyes sweeping the smoking perimeter like a hawk. "We don't have a fucking second to play doctor! The master alarm went dark when the upload cleared, but the base's secondary fallback protocols are going to realize the mainframe was hollowed out in less than five minutes. Move or die!"
"She's not walking a single step," Adrian snarled, his dark eyes locked entirely on Mari’s pale, sweat-slicked face.
Mari groaned, a weak, guttural sound, her eyelids fluttering against the pain. The blinding electrical agony had mutated into a deep, agonizing necrosis that burned all the way up her forearms. She tried to twitch her fingers, but the charred tissue simply refused to answer.
"Adrian..." she choked out, tasting blood on her lips. "The... transmission..."
"It went through," Adrian cut in, his voice dropping into a fierce, desperate rasp. He brushed a streak of soot and sweat from her forehead, his armor completely cracked. "The upload cleared. You did it, you insane, reckless bastard. You won."
"Found our way out!" Lena yelled, slamming her bloody fingers against her tablet as a subterranean schematic lit up green. "There’s an emergency drop-chute fifty yards out! It dumps straight into the old toxic drainage tunnels, completely under the security grid. We slide down, we hit the extraction zone."
Adrian didn't wait for permission. He hooked his massive arms beneath Mari’s back and knees, lifting her effortlessly against his chest despite his own bleeding shrapnel wounds.
"Lead the damn way," Adrian roared, turning his back on the smoking ruins of the console.
Sera took the point, a wall of pure ice and fury, while Lena covered their rear, sweeping the dark expanse with her tablet. Together, they sprinted across the frozen deck toward the gaping black maw of the escape hatch, plunging headfirst back into the suffocating dark as the facility behind them began to violently wake up for the kill.
