After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter twenty one: The Price of Dawn
The safehouse was a brutalist concrete tomb buried deep within the radioactive industrial sprawl of the outer sectors—a rusted, monolithic shell of reinforced steel choked by decaying warehouses and dead-end alleys.
The chopper slammed down hard onto the rain-slicked landing pad hidden within the facility's hollow core. Before the landing gear had even fully settled, Adrian kicked the cabin door wide open, hauling Mari out into his arms as the freezing, toxic morning gale whipped across the tarmac.
"Move! Inside, now!" Sera ordered, her gaze sweeping the pitch-black perimeter. As she moved to cover the rear, her hand brushed gently against Mari's shoulder, a lingering, protective touch that sent a shiver of raw electricity through the air. Lena sprinted ahead, throwing her body against the encrypted security locks with fierce, possessive urgency to get them inside.
They tore through the breach, slamming the thick steel bulkhead shut behind them with a deafening CLANG. The interior was a suffocating maze of shadows, lit only by the aggressive amber pulse of emergency generators and the harsh, vibrating hum of old ventilation units.
Adrian carried Mari straight down the metal-grid corridor to the medical bay, laying her down onto the cold steel examination table. His large, calloused hands lingered on her waist for a fraction of a second too long, reluctant to let her go, his dark eyes burning with fierce, possessive intensity.
The medic moved in instantly, jabbing an IV of heavy painkillers into her arm while Sera stepped close, her fingers gently brushing a lock of sweat-drenched hair from Mari's forehead. Lena hovered near the foot of the table, her breath hitching as she looked at Mari's ruined, gel-coated hands, a deep, aching devotion flashing in her eyes.
Adrian stood like a monolith beside the table, shielding Mari with his massive frame, completely ignoring the bleeding shrapnel wound on his own side. His gaze swept over the three of them—Sera’s protective proximity, Lena’s anxious, worshipful stare, and the way they all orbited Mari like gravity itself. They had all bled for her, and they would all burn the world down to keep her breathing.
"The grafts are barely holding," the medic snapped, sweating under the harsh lights as she secured a heavy stabilization brace around Mari's wrists. "She’s going to be dead to the world for the next twelve hours while her fried nervous system reboots. If she flexes her hands when she wakes up, the new tissue will tear wide open down to the bone."
"She won't," Adrian growled, his voice a low, absolute vow, his hand resting heavy and warm over Mari's uninjured shoulder to anchor her.
Lena slammed her cracked tablet down onto a metal tray, the screen flashing with a furious, blood-red global feed. "Look at the grid. The corporate board is in a full, blind panic. Their stock plummeted eighty points, and every black-ops asset is mobilizing."
"Let the bastards come," Sera murmured, stepping closer to the table, her shoulder brushing against Adrian's as she looked down at Mari with a lethal, tender promise in her eyes. "They're going to hunt us to the ends of the earth. But we'll rip apart anyone who tries to touch her."
Adrian didn't look away from Mari's sleeping face. He pulled Sera and Lena slightly closer into their tight circle around the table, a silent, unbreakable pact binding the four of them together in the dark.
The sky had been torn open, the corporate empire was bleeding out across the global grid, and the hounds were already loose. But tonight, wrapped in the fierce, undivided devotion of the people who would burn hell itself down for her, Mari rested safe in the eye of the storm.
