After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter Twenty Four: The Descent into Hell
The heavy iron door hissed open, spitting them into the dark, yawning abyss of the industrial lift shaft.
Before the chaotic echo of bouncing tungsten rounds had even faded, Adrian hauled Mari up into his massive arms once more, his thick biceps straining as he pressed her dead-flush against his chest. He didn't just carry her; he claimed her, his towering frame acting as an absolute, impenetrable wall against the slaughter erupting behind them.
"Get in! Move, move, fucking move!" Lena screamed, shoving her way into the lift car and smashing her bloodied palm frantically against the internal descent controls.
Sera retreated backward into the cramped lift car, her hands still blazing with blinding, jagged sheets of absolute-zero frost. As the heavy corporate assault forces blew through the secondary bulkhead with a deafening, earth-shaking roar, Sera slammed her palms against the emergency override wall, triggering a brutal flash-freeze.
A wall of thick, glinting, lethal ice surged violently across the corridor entrance, encasing the leading operatives in solid blocks of killing frost and sealing the tunnel shut just as a final, desperate hail of bullets ricocheted harmlessly off the solid ice barrier.
SLAM-CLANG.
The lift's heavy outer security gates slammed shut, cutting off the choking smoke and the dying screams as the car dropped into the vertical shaft with a stomach-churning, bone-rattling jolt.
The harsh red emergency strobes inside the lift cast long, bloody, pulsing shadows across their sweat-slicked faces. The air was thin, burning hot and heavy with the violent scent of ozone, cordite, fresh blood, and raw adrenaline.
Adrian didn't put Mari down for a single fraction of a second. He kept her pinned securely against the reinforced corner of the lift car, his massive body boxing her in completely, his dark, feral gaze locked entirely on her face. His heavy hand slid slowly from the back of her neck down to her uninjured shoulder, his thumb pressing possessively, almost bruisingly into her skin as if verifying she was still breathing, still whole, still entirely his.
"Are you hit?" Adrian demanded, his voice a low, rough, gravelly vibration that rattled straight through her ribs and straight to her core. "Did they touch you?"
"I'm fine," Mari breathed, her voice a ragged gasp, wincing slightly as the violent, breakneck descent jarred her healing, agonizing nerve endings. She looked straight up into his dark eyes, her chest heaving, completely drowning in the intense, suffocating, consuming heat of his attention.
Lena slid down the opposite steel wall until she hit the cold floor, panting hard, clutching her cracked tablet to her chest like a lifeline. Her feverish eyes flicked up to Mari, a fierce, desperate, worshipful adoration softening her sharp, hardened features. "We're... we're off their primary local grid," Lena whispered, her voice trembling with manic relief. "This lift drops straight down into the toxic sub-basement drainage mains. But the second we hit the bottom, they're going to reroute every hunter-killer drone in the sector to intercept us."
Sera stood right beside Adrian, her shoulder pressed flush against his massive arm, her breath pluming into tiny, glittering frost crystals in the freezing air of the shaft. She reached out, her cool, deadly fingers lightly brushing a strand of sweat-soaked hair from Mari's cheek, her eyes dark, gleaming, and lethal.
"Let the bastards come," Sera murmured, a dangerous, beautiful, bloody smile stretching across her lips. "We have nowhere left to fucking run, and neither do they."
The lift shrieked in protest as it plunged deeper into the pitch-black underworld, the heavy steel cables groaning under the lethal speed, but inside the claustrophobic metal box, the four of them formed a closed, unbreakable, feral loop. They were hunted, bleeding, and outnumbered by an empire—but they were bound together by fire, pain, and absolute, undivided devotion, ready to tear down the world before letting anyone take her away.
