SCREEEEECH-BOOM.

The industrial lift car slammed into the bottom of the concrete shaft with a brutal, bone-shattering jolt that threw up a cloud of toxic dust and nearly buckled their knees. The emergency lights flickered, died completely for two agonizing, pitch-black seconds, and then flared back to life in a dim, pulsing, blood-red strobe.

Before the kinetic echoes of the descent had even died away, Adrian kicked the lift's heavy maintenance hatch wide open with his boot. The thick, suffocating stench of rusted iron, rotting sewage, and boiling chemical runoff hit them like a physical blow to the face. They had plunged straight into the forgotten, radioactive underbelly of the corporate sector—a sprawling, subterranean labyrinth of decaying concrete drainage mains and rushing, black toxic water.

"Out. Move!" Adrian commanded, stepping straight out of the lift with Mari still cradled securely against his massive chest, refusing to let her weight rest on her shattered, burning hands for even a fraction of a second.

Lena scrambled out right behind him, her boots splashing wildly into the ankle-deep muck as she whipped out her cracked tablet, the screen casting a pale, frantic blue wash over her tense, sweating face. "The corporate net is pinging our drop vector! We’ve got less than ninety fucking seconds before automated hunter-drones flood these tunnels!"

Sera cleared the threshold last, her hands instantly igniting into twin flares of blistering, sub-zero energy that hissed against the damp air and cast long, dancing blue shadows against the slick, weeping concrete walls. She scanned the intersecting tunnels with the cold, dead-eyed precision of an apex predator. "Left goes deeper into the dead-end maintenance grid. Right leads to the old intake vents opening up near the cliffside. Which way?"

"Vents," Adrian snarled, his eyes fixed on the narrow, sloping tunnel to the right. He shifted Mari slightly in his arms, his thick biceps bulging under the strain as he locked her in tighter. "We need open air and mobility. If we get trapped in the deep mains, they'll flush the tunnels with neurotoxin and bury us in a tomb."

"Moving!" Lena muttered, taking the point and sprinting down the dark, dripping corridor, her sidearm raised and ready.

Sera dropped instantly into the rear-guard position, her frost-laced fingers crackling with lethal anticipation as she walked backward, eyes locked dead on the dark junction they had just abandoned.

Adrian carried Mari through the filth, his heavy boots splashing rhythmically against the floor. Every muscle in his body screamed from the day's endless carnage, but his focus was singular, absolute, and terrifyingly possessive. He looked down at her, his voice dropping to a rough, gravelly rasp beneath the echoing drip of water. "Hold onto me, Mari. Don't you dare let go."

Mari locked her arms as best she could around his broad shoulders, pressing her forehead flush against his chest, listening to the thunderous, frantic, heavy rhythm of his heart beneath her ear. She didn't say a word, but her grip—even through the agonizing stab of raw nerve pain—was a fierce, unbreakable vow.

Suddenly, a high-pitched, mechanical whirring shriek echoed down the concrete tunnel behind them, bouncing sickeningly off the walls.

ZRRR-K-K-K-SHZZZT.

"Drones!" Sera yelled, her voice cutting sharp and lethal through the dark. "Incoming from the main junction! Three corporate sweepers, hot and tracking!"

A blinding glare of crimson searchlights cut violently through the tunnel behind them, painting the wet walls with the unmistakable, blood-red target-lock reticles of executioner drones.

"Run, goddamn it, run!" Adrian roared, exploding forward with terrifying, explosive speed, carrying his pack straight into the heart of the dark.
