After the End: Mari's Second Life

Chapter Twenty Three: Blood in the Frost

  • Next Chapter

The deafening, rhythmic roar of thermite eating through the primary four-inch bulkhead slammed down the narrow subterranean corridor like the hammer of god.

Adrian tightened his massive, iron-grip arms around Mari, hoisting her flush against his chest so hard she could feel the violent, racing beat of his heart. She buried her face against the crook of his neck, her breathing ragged, every nerve in her charred forearms screaming in white-hot agony. But there was no hesitation, no room for weakness—just the suffocating, protective heat of Adrian shielding her, Sera standing like a statue of pure, lethal ice right in front of them, and Lena covering their flank with her sidearm leveled, her eyes blazing with absolute, unhinged fanaticism.

CRASH-BOOM.

The heavy steel door violently blew inward, showering the corridor in a blinding cascade of white-hot sparks and choking, acrid grey smoke.

Through the sulfurous haze, shadows flooded the passage—corporate hit squad operatives in matte-black tactical armor, assault rifles raised, cutting through the strobing red emergency lights with lethal, ruthless efficiency.

Sera didn't wait for them to acquire targets.

With a low, feral snarl ripping from her throat, she thrust both hands forward. A blinding, violent wave of absolute-zero frost detonated from her fingertips, encasing the leading operatives in thick, jagged spikes of killing ice before their fingers could even twitch on their triggers. The front soldier hit the concrete floor and shattered into a million frozen pieces like cheap glass.

"Move! Keep pushing, don't stop!" Sera screamed over the deafening, earth-shattering chatter of enemy assault rifles chewing the corridor to ribbons.

Adrian bolted down the metal-grid hallway, carrying Mari as if she weighed nothing at all, his huge frame acting as a total human wall against the chaotic hail of gunfire ricocheting around them. Lena fell into a tight, vicious step right beside them, firing precise, suppressive double-taps over her shoulder, her tablet clutched in a death-grip as she hacked the internal blast doors closed one by one.

"The heavy lift at the end of Sector Three is our only way out!" Lena shrieked, her voice high and tight with unadulterated adrenaline as she slammed her bloody palm against the master override panel.

A massive secondary bulkhead groaned, screeched, and slammed across the corridor just as a blistering wall of tungsten rounds chewed savagely into the metal inches from Adrian's ear.

Adrian didn't even blink. He dropped down to one knee behind a thick concrete support pillar, setting Mari down only enough to cage her completely with his massive body while Sera stepped up to the front line, her hands blazing with blinding, sub-zero cold.

"Stay right behind me," Adrian growled, his voice a low, terrifyingly possessive rumble. His hand gripped the back of her neck in a fierce, branding caress, his dark, feral eyes locked entirely on her face amidst the roaring chaos. "I'm not letting a single bastard touch you. Not today. Not ever, Mari."

Mari looked up at him, her pulse slamming wildly against her ribs, completely wrapped in the suffocating, devoted heat of their shared obsession. She couldn't fight with her ruined hands yet, but she didn't need to lift a finger. They were her shield, her pack, and her absolute ruin.

"Open the damn door, Lena!" Sera yelled, her frost flaring blindingly bright as the secondary bulkhead began to shudder and buckle under heavy enemy breaching charges.

The heavy iron door hissed open into the dark, vertical abyss of the lift shaft, and the pack closed ranks tight around their center, ready to tear the world apart limb from limb before letting anyone take her away.
