Chapter Nine: End of the Line

The blast doors didn't open—they violently tore inward. Concrete and frost exploded into their faces.

"Clear left!" Sera gasped, her blue aura casting jagged shadows.

"Clear right!" Adrian grunted, his shoulder brushing Mari as they pushed through the freezing, blood-and-ozone choked air.

"Thermal spikes ahead—they're surging!" Lena warned, her fingers flying over her screen.

"Some goddamned bastard," Mari whispered, sweeping her sidearm.

Overhead, the lights died. Total blackness—broken only by a heavy, deliberate sound.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

Boots on steel.

"Stop right there or I turn you into fucking mist!" Adrian snarled.

The footsteps stopped. A secondary generator flickered to life, bathing the corridor in a sickly amber strobe.

There he was. The featureless black mask. Dragging a high-frequency resonance blade that shrieked against the floor, throwing a blinding shower of white-hot sparks.

"You took your sweet-ass time, Mari," the distorted voice vibrated straight into their skulls.

Mari didn't hesitate. With a feral snarl, she lunged, driving her blade for his throat.

CLANG.

He moved with terrifying speed, side-stepping and slamming his weapon into hers with the bone-shattering force of a freight train, throwing her back against Adrian's chest.

Mari slammed back against Adrian’s hard chest. His arm locked around her waist like a vise, anchoring her as he hoisted his assault rifle with raw, blinding fury.

"Get your fucking hands off her, you piece of shit!" Adrian roared, squeezing the trigger.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Muzzle flash tore through the dark. Bullets shredded the concrete where the bastard had stood a millisecond ago, sending up a choking storm of dust and shrapnel.

He was already gone—a blur of tactical black vanishing into the shadows.

"He's heading for the core!" Lena shrieked, her fingers hammering her console. "If that motherfucker hits the vault, the whole damn grid blows!"

"Not on my fucking watch!" Sera hissed, thrusting her hands forward. A lethal wave of jagged icicles blasted across the floor, locking down the corridor.

"Move, move, move, goddammit!" Mari yelled, tearing out of Adrian's grip into a dead sprint.

They hit the central hub—a massive, subterranean amphitheater throbbing with the violet glow of the Architects' core. The rhythmic thump, thump, thump of the heartbeat shook the teeth in their skulls.

And there he was. Standing on the elevated platform, his gloved hand hovering inches over the master override switch.

The masked piece of trash turned his head slowly, the featureless black void catching the violet light.

"End of the damn line, Mari," his multi-layered voice echoed off the walls.

Mari didn't slow down. She didn't hesitate for a fucking second. She leveled her sidearm, locked her eyes on his chest, and pulled the trigger.
