After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter Eight: Welcome Home
The marble floor bucked like a trapped beast.
Ozone and scorched metal choked the air. Above the vault, the obsidian anchor shrieked, its violet tendrils whipping wildly.
"Lena! How long?!" Mari roared over the deafening bass.
Lena’s fingers blurred across the console. "Ninety fucking seconds! The system is fighting back!"
"We don't have ninety seconds!" Sera snapped.
CRASH.
The ice over the front doors shattered. A wave of obsidian predators poured in, multi-jointed limbs clicking on the marble, black drool sizzling on the floor.
Adrian stepped in front of Mari, his broad shoulders tensing, a vicious grin on his face. "Stay behind me."
"I don't hide, Adrian," Mari snapped, stepping beside him with her knife raised. "We fight together!"
"God, you're stubborn."
"Focus, you idiots!" Sera yelled.
She thrust her hands forward, unleashing a blinding blizzard of icicles that pinned the leading beasts to the floor with wet crunches. Adrian roared, swinging his iron pipe in a brutal arc that caved in a skull with a satisfying CRACK.
Mari moved like a ghost. She ducked a razor-sharp claw, spun, and drove her blade deep into the underside of a beast, ripping it upward. Back-to-back, they were a lethal machine—Adrian handling raw kinetic destruction, Mari striking with cold, precise efficiency. In the center, Sera froze the horde to a crawl while Lena fired her sidearm with deafening blasts of gunpowder.
"Forty seconds!" Lena screamed.
"Hold the fucking line!" Mari shouted, sliding in black gore to slash a throat.
The anchor flashed blinding white. The digital hum cut dead.
The monsters froze mid-stride—then dissolved instantly into fine, choking black ash.
Lena slammed the execute key. BEEP. Green light.
"Override successful!" Lena gasped, collapsing. "It's shutting down!"
The obsidian sphere groaned and snapped shut, plunging the lobby into amber emergency light.
Adrian dropped his pipe, spun around, and grabbed Mari by the waist, hauling her hard against his chest.
"You absolute goddamned maniac," he breathed, his heart hammering against hers. "You had to run straight into the lion's den?"
Mari laughed breathlessly, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "We survived."
"Save the romance for when we aren't covered in alien dust," Sera smirked, chest heaving.
Lena clutched her data drive, pale and sweating. "Mari... I traced a fragment of that signal before the core died."
Mari pulled back just enough, her eyes narrowing. "Where?"
"The old government bunker," Lena whispered. "Beneath the federal archives. Sector Four."
Mari's blood ran ice cold. Sector Four. The exact place where her first life had ended in fire.
The masked bastard's voice echoed in her mind: See you at the end, Mari.
She slid her knife back into its sheath with a sharp, echoing click.
"Then that's where we're going," Mari whispered, her voice lethal. "Let's go find out who's playing god."
The humvee’s tires shrieked as Adrian whipped the wheel, slamming the heavy vehicle into a violent drift that threw Mari hard against the passenger door.
"Hold on!" Adrian roared, punching the gas.
Behind them, the sky tore wide open—a jagged, bleeding purple wound raining ash and sulfur. Up ahead, the federal archives waited like a shattered tomb, its massive blast doors blown outward into twisted ribbons of steel.
Adrian slammed the brakes. Skidding to a halt, the air went dead.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
A colossal, bass-heavy heartbeat pounded from deep beneath the earth, vibrating straight through their teeth.
Adrian killed the engine, his dark eyes locking onto Mari with raw, suffocating intensity in the dim light. "We stay close. If that bastard is down there, I'm putting a bullet through his fucking mask."
"Let's move," Mari snapped, vaulting out of the cab.
Sera and Lena hit the pavement beside them, weapons raised, weapons hot. They plunged down the jagged concrete stairs into the pitch-black maw of Sector Four, the amber emergency lights flickering like dying embers.
BZZZZT.
Mari’s phone seared against her thigh, vibrating violently. She whipped it out. The harsh screen glare cut through the dark:
WELCOME HOME, MARI.
YOU'RE FUCKING LATE.
A cold, lethal thrill spiked through her veins. Mari slipped the phone away, gripped her knife and sidearm tighter, and stepped into the pitch-black abyss.
