After the End: Mari's Second Life
Chapter Seven: Host Detected
Adrian didn't waste a second. He gripped the heavy iron pipe with both hands, muscles straining as he stepped past Mari and swung with bone-shattering force straight into the center of the bank’s massive obsidian doors.
CRACK.
The sound echoed like a gunshot through the empty, smoke-choked street. The reinforced glass spiderwebbed, and with a secondary roar, Adrian planted his boot squarely in the center and kicked it inward. Shards rained down onto the marble floor of the lobby in a glittering avalanche.
"Move, move, move!" Lena yelled, slipping through the shattered threshold first, her portable interface flashing as she began scanning the local network for the anchor's core frequency.
Sera swept her hand in a wide arc behind them, coating the open doorway in a shimmering sheet of jagged ice just as a cluster of skittering shadows lunged from the adjacent alley. A muffled thud echoed outside as the vanguard of the horde slammed face-first into her frozen barrier.
"That'll hold them for about thirty seconds!" Sera panted, rushing into the lobby behind Mari. "Make it quick!"
The central bank’s grand interior had been warped into a nightmare.
Where mahogany desks and marble pillars once stood, thick, pulsing tendrils of black-and-violet matter now fused with the architecture, weeping a thick, sticky resin that smelled of ozone and old graves. At the far end of the hall, suspended above the vault, the second anchor spun in a violent, chaotic gyre of dark energy—a mirror image of the one they had just destroyed, only twice as massive, humming with a frequency that vibrated straight through their teeth.
And standing right beneath it, framed by the swirling vortex of light, was something that made Mari’s blood run instantly, paralyzingly cold.
It wasn't a monster.
It was a silhouette. A human shape clad in tactical gear, leaning casually against the edge of the vault railing, watching them with an unnerving, patient stillness.
As they stepped further into the hall, the figure raised a hand. A smartphone screen flickered in its palm, casting a pale, sickly blue glow across a face hidden behind a smooth, featureless black mask.
"Took you long enough, Mari," a voice echoed—distorted, layered, and bouncing off the marble walls like it was coming from everywhere at once.
Adrian instantly raised his pipe, stepping in front of Mari with a snarl. "Who the fuck is that?"
Mari didn't answer. Her grip on her hunting knife was so tight her knuckles were bloodless. She knew that voice. Even altered through static and distortion, the cadence of it scraped against memories she had buried deep in the ash of her first life.
The figure tilted its head, tapping the screen of its phone.
HOST DETECTED.
"You broke the first lock early," the masked voice purred, stepping closer to the edge of the drop. "Impressive. I always knew you were stubborn, Vale. But you can't rewrite a game when you're just a piece on the board."
"Who are you?!" Lena shouted, frantically typing code into her drive, trying to lock onto the signal source.
The figure ignored Lena entirely, its gaze locked squarely on Mari through the dark lenses of the mask.
"See you at the end, Mari," the voice whispered.
The figure stepped backward off the edge of the vault railing—and vanished entirely into the pulsing vortex of the anchor.
The obsidian sphere flared blindingly white, the deep bass hum shifting into a deafening shriek as the entire bank began to tear itself apart from the inside out.
Mari didn't hesitate. She looked at her crew—at Adrian, Sera, and Lena—standing beside her in the jaws of hell, ready to burn the world down for her.
"Shut it down," Mari ordered, her eyes burning with a dark, terrifying resolve. "We're ending this right here."
