BANG.

The gunshot cracked like a whip through the roaring amphitheater, muzzle flash tearing a blinding orange gash through the purple-black haze.

The bullet slammed dead-center into the bastard’s tactical vest with a wet, heavy thud. He didn't even stagger. He just absorbed the kinetic impact, his hand crashing down onto the master override switch with brutal, deliberate force.

CLACK-HISSSSS.

Super-heated steam shrieked from ruptured valves, filling the air with the suffocating reek of burnt oil and sulfur. The violet core erupted into a blinding supernova, and that deep heartbeat—thump, thump, thump—shhifted instantly into a high-pitched, screeching wail that shattered the capillaries in Mari's ears, sending warm, metallic blood trickling down her neck.

"The containment is failing!" Lena screamed, her face washed in frantic blue light. "If we don't cut the reroute right now, this whole fucking bunker is going to vaporize us!"

"I've got him!" Adrian roared.

With explosive, violent momentum, Adrian vaulted onto the platform. He lunged, massive hands grabbing the masked figure by the vest and slamming him back against the trembling glass console with bone-cracking force.

CRASH.

Shattered glass rained down like white-hot shrapnel.

The bastard didn't fight back. He tilted his featureless black mask upward, his multi-layered voice vibrating straight into their teeth. "You're too late, Mari. The loop is already closed."

And then, he dissolved—not into blood, but into a dense, swirling cloud of purple-black digital static and freezing ash, slipping right through Adrian's desperate fingers like smoke.

"Damn it!" Adrian cursed, his fist smashing into the steel console with a heavy, bone-bruising thud.

Above them, the core ripped wide open. A blistering wave of searing heat washed over them, smelling of scorched flesh and burning time, threatening to melt their skin right off their bones.

"Mari! The switch!" Sera yelled, throwing up a cracking wall of frost that immediately hissed and melted.

Mari didn't hesitate. She threw herself onto the scorching metal, ignoring the agonizing burn as super-heated iron seared right through her gloves into her palms. She gripped the heavy red manual override lever and threw her entire body weight into it, screaming as raw, blistering energy slammed into her muscles, threatening to tear her apart from the inside out.

The lever wouldn’t budge.

It was locked by a magnetic deadbolt, screaming against her grip with thousands of volts of resistance that sent violent, jagged arcs of blue electricity ripping up her forearms. The skin on her palms blistered and blackened instantly, the sickening smell of scorched flesh filling her nose.

"Fucking move!"

Adrian was there in a heartbeat, his massive body pressing flush against her back, radiating blistering heat. His heavy, calloused hands slammed directly over hers on the scorching iron lever, his muscles bunching into iron cables as he roared through his teeth, throwing his raw, devastating strength behind hers.

Beside them, Sera dropped to her knees, slamming both palms onto the smoking deck. Frost erupted with a deafening shriek, a thick, sub-zero barrier rising to deflect the blistering wall of thermal radiation eating away at their skin.

"I'm keeping the core from frying us alive, but it's holding!" Sera gasped, blood trickling from her nose as the sub-zero ice hissed, cracked, and melted in real-time under the catastrophic heat.

"Lena! The override code!" Mari screamed over the roaring, deafening shriek of the dying reactor, her voice tearing raw as her muscles shrieked under the strain.

Lena was already there, sliding across the smoking deck on her knees, her fingers a blur of motion over the cracking interface. "The mainframe is locked out! The bastard encrypted the core with a quantum-phased loop! I have to bypass the motherboard manually—give me five seconds or we all turn to ash!"

Above them, the temporal rift tore wider, a jagged tear in reality spitting out blinding flashes of white light and the deafening roar of a dying world. The air pressure dropped to zero, stealing the breath from their lungs.

Adrian's chest heaved hard against Mari's back, his hot breath brushing her ear, his voice rough and laced with desperate fury. "We push together, Mari. On three. One... two..."

"...three!"

They threw their combined, raw weight into the lever.

CRACK-THUMP.

With a deafening, metallic shriek that sounded like the spine of the world snapping in half, the magnetic deadbolt shattered. The heavy iron lever gave way, plunging downward into the floor with a violent, final lock that rattled their teeth.

A shockwave of compressed air exploded outward from the core, slamming into them like a physical wall. The violet light flickered, stuttered violently, and then choked out, plunging the immense amphitheater into a suffocating, pitch-black gloom lit only by the dying, amber sparks of the ruined console.

The roaring silence that followed was heavy, ringing painfully in their ears.

Mari collapsed forward against the console, her breathing ragged, shallow, and burning her raw throat. Her hands were a mangled mess of raw, blistering burns, the sickening, sweet-acrid stench of her own scorched skin thick and nauseating in the air. Before she could slide limply to the deck, Adrian’s arms swept around her with desperate, possessive force, hauling her crushed body straight up against his solid, sweating chest. His heavy, frantic breathing collided with the wild, jackrabbiting rhythm of her own heart.

"Got you, goddamnit, I've got you," he rasped, his voice thick with unbridled adrenaline and raw, terrifying relief as he pressed his face deep into the crook of her neck, his hot, trembling breath searing against her sensitive skin.

Sera slumped hard against the edge of the platform, the frost around her magic melting instantly into a warm puddle of water as she wiped a thick streak of dark blood from her upper lip with the back of her shaking hand. "Tell me... tell me we locked the bastard out of the network," she breathed, her breasts heaving beneath her torn tactical gear, every muscle in her body trembling.

Lena slammed her fist onto her portable console, her eyes darting across the flickering lines of code struggling to stabilize on her screen. She let out a sharp, breathless laugh, though her fingers shook so violently she could barely type.

"The loop is broken," Lena called out, her voice echoing shrilly in the vast, cooling chamber. "The core is offline. We stopped the grid detonation."

For a second, nobody moved. They clung to each other in the dark, the lingering, electric terror of their near-death experience hanging heavy and suffocating in the scorched air.

Then, a low, mechanical whir cut through the silence.

From the center of the dark, ruined amphitheater, the main holographic projector flickered violently to life. A single, glowing blue line materialized in the air above the dead core, rapidly expanding into a massive, three-dimensional interface that cast stark, haunting shadows across their faces.

It wasn't an explosion or an attack. It was a file transfer. A final, taunting data payload left behind by the masked antagonist.

And right at the top of the floating projection, pulsing in bright, mocking crimson letters, was a single countdown timer.

00:59:59.

Adrian’s arm tightened like a steel vise around Mari’s waist, pulling her flush against his groin as his dark eyes locked on the countdown ticking relentlessly downward into hell.

"What the fuck is that?"
