After the End: Mari's Second Life

Chapter Fourteen: The Needle and the Storm

  • Next Chapter

The wind up here didn't just blow—it screamed with a razor-edged, lung-collapsing fury, tearing across the jagged concrete array and whipping Mari’s hair into stinging wet strands across her face. Every breath tasted heavily of ozone, copper, and bitter, radioactive ash that coated her throat like dry sand.

00:47:45.

The massive iron silhouette of the transmission tower loomed directly above them like a skeletal titan, piercing the churning, bruise-purple belly of the storm. At its base, a lethal perimeter of automated defense turrets hummed with a low, vibrating resonance that rattled straight through the soles of their boots, their twin barrels twitching with violent, predatory intent.

"The uplink terminal is hardwired directly into the tower's junction box!" Lena screamed over the howling gale, dropping hard onto her knees behind a thick concrete blast barrier. Her fingers flew across her portable screen in a manic blur, the harsh blue light washing over her terrified, sweat-streaked face. "If that countdown hits zero, the packet uploads to the orbital station and we are fucking dead!"

"Then we carve a bloody path straight through!" Mari growled, leveling her sidearm.

The white-hot agony in her blistered, ruined palms flared viciously as she gripped the textured polymer handle, the raw, peeling tissue sticking to the cold plastic before tearing anew. A wave of nauseating pain shot straight up her forearms, but she shoved it down into the dark, feral core of her mind. There was no room for mercy. Not here. Not now.

Adrian stepped up beside her, his massive, hard frame radiating a fierce, brutal heat that cut straight through the freezing gale. He didn't waste breath on words. The heavy military rifle in his grip locked home with a sharp, metallic clack that tasted of gun oil and cordite. His solid, unyielding shoulder slammed flush against hers—a heavy, anchoring wall of muscle and raw power.

"Sera, Lena, secure the fucking flank!" Adrian roared, his voice a deep, gravelly command cutting through the storm. "Keep those turret targeting arrays jammed or frozen. Mari and I are taking the line."

"On it!" Sera yelled, her breath pluming white as she slid behind a cracked concrete stanchion. Her hands erupted in a brilliant, pale-blue sub-zero aura, her eyes locked on the oil-slick barrels of the nearest defense turret.

WHIR-CLACK.

The turrets snapped fully awake. Their targeting systems painted the concrete in stabbing beams of blinding crimson light, sweeping frantically across the deck.

"Move!" Mari screamed.

They broke cover in a explosive, breathless sprint, boots slamming hard against the freezing, slick concrete.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

A deafening wall of high-caliber rounds chewed the ground inches behind their heels, thunderous impacts kicking up white-hot shrapnel that shredded the air and pinged viciously off their tactical vests. The sheer kinetic force of the gunfire slammed into Mari's back, driving her forward faster, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

The tower was right there. The countdown was ticking down to zero. And they were running straight into hell.
