After the End: Mari's Second Life

Chapter Thirteen: Ascent to the Breach

Adrian slammed his shoulder into the blast doors, hot steel screaming in agony until a gap tore open.

Swish. Radioactive wind roared down the shaft, choking them with ash.

"Sensors are waking up," Lena gasped, her screen flashing blue. "Fifty-three fucking minutes before the upload clears. We take the maintenance shaft."

"Lift is dead," Sera snapped, peering into the pitch-black fifty-story drop. "We free-climb."

"Then we fucking climb," Mari said. Her blistered palms throbbed, wet and agonizing, but the clock didn't wait.

00:52:14.

Adrian stepped in, heat radiating off his massive frame. He strapped Mari into his harness in a blur of motion, his calloused hands gripping her waist. "If your grip fails, I've got you."

"I don't need—"

"Shut the fuck up and let me hold you," Adrian growled, eyes fierce. "Save your strength."

Sera shoved a thermal pack into Mari's pocket to numb the fire in her hands. "Move."

"Lead the way, Lena," Mari hissed, gripping the line.

They launched themselves into the dark, racing the clock to tear down the sky.

Up they went, a relentless, vertical surge against gravity and time.

The service cables vibrated beneath their boots like tightened guitar strings, humming with residual electrical current. Every pull sent a jagged spike of white-hot agony through Mari’s blistered palms, tearing at the peeling skin, but she didn't slow down. She locked her teeth together until her jaw ached, using the sheer, brutal momentum of the climb to drown out the pain.

Below them, the red glow of active security sensors flickered to life along the lower levels, sweeping searchlight beams across the empty air like robotic eyes hunting for intruders.

Whir-click. Whir-click.

"Drone swarm incoming from Sub-Level Twelve!" Lena shouted over the whistling wind, her voice tight with panic as she hauled herself up a parallel cable with desperate, trembling arms. "They've caught our thermal signatures!"

"Keep moving!" Adrian bellowed from above, his massive muscles bunching as he hauled his own heavy frame upward with terrifying speed, acting as a human shield directly beneath Mari.

Suddenly, a high-pitched mechanical shriek echoed up the shaft. Red laser targeting grids painted the dark concrete walls around them as three cylindrical defense drones shot out from a maintenance hatch fifty feet below, their twin rotary barrels spinning up with a lethal, deafening whine.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

A cascade of tungsten rounds slammed into the concrete inches from Sera’s left boot, sending a blinding shower of white-hot sparks raining down into the bottomless abyss.

"Sera, take out the lead drone!" Mari screamed, releasing one hand from the cable for a fraction of a second to draw her sidearm, the blistering pain in her palm entirely ignored.

Sera didn't hesitate. Hanging suspended by one arm from a thick fiber-optic cable, her free hand snapped upward, fingers splayed. A brilliant blast of sub-zero frost erupted from her palm, catching the lead drone square in its optical sensor. The machine seized mid-air, its internal rotors freezing solid in a cloud of thick, white vapor before it plummeted backward, smashing into the remaining two drones in a shower of shattered plastic and spitting electrical fire.

They spiraled down into the dark, crashing into the depths below with a distant, muffled crunch.

"Clear!" Sera yelled, her chest heaving as she scrambled up another ten feet of cable, the cold air burning her throat.

00:48:03.

The digital countdown flashed relentlessly in the back of Mari’s mind. Forty-eight minutes.

They crested the final lip of the maintenance shaft, bursting through a rusted service hatch and tumbling out onto the freezing, wind-whipped concrete of the surface level. The sky above them was a turbulent, bruised expanse of purple and black storm clouds, dominated by the massive, needle-like silhouette of the orbital transmission tower piercing the upper atmosphere.

And right at its base, surrounded by a ring of automated defense turrets, sat the uplink console.

Adrian rolled to his feet instantly, hauling Mari up beside him with one powerful arm wrapped securely around her waist, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter. "We've got company."
