After the End: Mari's Second Life

Chapter Fifteen: The Final Transmission (Uncensored & Unhinged)

The fucking automated turrets screamed to life, their twin barrels violently locking onto flesh and bone with cold, calculating precision. Crimson targeting lasers slashed across the freezing concrete, weaving a death web of pure, unfiltered slaughter.

"Get down!" Adrian roared, his massive frame surging forward to slam Mari behind a reinforced coolant housing just as a deafening wall of armor-piercing rounds chewed the space they had occupied a fraction of a second prior into red mist and concrete shrapnel.

The air instantly saturated with the choking stench of cordite, burning ozone, and scorched skin.

"We have less than forty-four fucking minutes!" Lena shrieked over the deafening mechanical roar, her knuckles bruised and bleeding as her fingers flew across her ruggedized tablet. Her back pressed hard against the freezing steel of the housing, panting white plumes into the sub-zero gale. "The damn encryption firewall is actively devouring the code! If I don't hardwire straight into the master terminal right now, we are locked out permanently—game over, we die in the dark!"

Sera knelt at the sheer, terrifying drop of the roof edge, her hands glowing with a violent, glacial blue frost. "There are three active turrets tearing this sector apart. If I flash-freeze the central relay, I can blind their targeting arrays for maybe ten fucking seconds. That’s our entire window. Do it or die."

Mari looked down at her hands. The skin of her palms was shredded and weeping, slick with warm blood that instantly froze into a jagged crust against the biting wind. She curled her mangled fingers into white-hot claws of agony, drawing her sidearm with a sharp, ragged gasp. "Ten seconds better be enough."

Adrian cracked his thick neck, the sound like breaking bone beneath his heavy jacket. His dark eyes burned with ruthless, animal focus as he hefted a heavy magnetic EMP grenade in his palm. "When Sera blows the relay, I'm taking the right flank and tearing that perimeter apart with my bare hands. Mari, you run your ass straight to the console with Lena. Do not look back, do not hesitate."

"Adrian, you goddamn suicidal idiot—" Mari started, her chest tight.

"I said I've got you," he interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, fierce growl that brooked zero argument. He gripped her waist, pulling her flush against his chest for a single brutal second before shoving her forward. "Move!"

"Burn, you bastards!" Sera screamed.

With a sweeping, violent arc of her arms, she unleashed a torrent of pure cryogenic devastation. A wave of bone-shattering frost surged across the frozen deck, slamming directly into the central turret relay box. A blinding cascade of blue-white electrical arcs erupted as the machinery instantly crystallized and shattered into dust, the crimson targeting lasers stuttering, gasping, and dying one by one.

"Go! Go!" Adrian bellowed, launching himself into the open like a freight train.

He cocked his arm and hurled the EMP grenade with lethal force. It impacted the base of the eastern turret and detonated in a silent, punishing blue shockwave, instantly frying the automated weapon systems and sending a choking plume of black smoke billowing into the violent, storm-torn sky.

Mari and Lena didn't think; they bolted, their boots hammering desperately against the icy deck as they raced straight toward the towering monolith of the uplink console.

00:41:22.

The digital countdown burned behind Mari's eyes like a brand. They slammed to a halt before the scarred, industrial terminal. Lena slammed her physical data-cable port into the master interface, her screen flashing an aggressive, blinding green.

"The upload's re-routing!" Lena gasped, sweat freezing instantly into icicles on her forehead. "The firewall is shedding—ten percent... twenty percent—"

A deafening, high-pitched mechanical screech tore through the air.

The primary defense turret on the western perimeter had rebooted ahead of schedule, its targeting sensors snapping dead onto Lena's chest. The twin barrels whined up to a lethal, supersonic velocity.

"Look the fuck out!" Mari screamed, her adrenaline spiking into a blinding rush.

Without a second thought, Mari launched herself at Lena, tackling her hard onto the freezing concrete just as a devastating stream of heavy ordnance tore through the space they had occupied. The bullets sheared the top of the console clean off in a blinding shower of white-hot metal shards and screaming sparks.

Lena’s tablet was ripped from her grasp, skidding violently across the ice. The heavy connection cable severed with a violent snap and a shower of dangerous, blinding blue sparks.

"Oh, fuck—no, no, no!" Lena cried, scrambling frantically across the slick deck after it, her nails clawing at the ice. "The sync is fucking breaking!"

Mari pushed herself up on trembling arms, blood dripping freely from her torn, ruined palms onto the frozen steel. She stared up at the towering orbital spire, then down at the dying, flickering screen.

They were entirely out of time, out of ammo, and staring straight into the abyss.

What happens next as the seconds slip away?
