After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 527: Melting
On either side of the abandoned pier stood a seven-story office building.
The two office buildings were connected by a skyway of steel and tempered glass, but below them was a narrow river channel.
Her liquid flame was spreading forward from the frozen river channel.
Initially, she had worried that her Fire Element Superpower’s Attack Power would be greatly diminished in this cold.
But the frozen river was covered in zombies. When the liquid flame touched them, it would instantly set them ablaze, and the zombies themselves became her fuel.
Tongues of fire licked at the ice, slowly seeping downward. The ice was actually starting to melt!
’Good thing I have plenty of Superpower. I wonder if I can clear this whole area out.’
Nina Jacobs felt a sense of helplessness.
They had to pass through the main road next to this area on their way back.
But her group had been killing zombies here for two days and two nights, and the horde still poured endlessly from across the river.
So, she came up with an idea: she would simply use her Fire Element Superpower to melt the river’s surface.
That way, the zombies on the other side would be temporarily unable to cross.
Even a few minutes would be enough for them to find a way through.
At first, Nia and the others thought she was crazy. After all, the river and the pier were completely overrun with zombies.
Besides, melting an entire river was simply not something a Superpower User could do.
However, Nina Jacobs had found an underground cargo tunnel that led directly into the pier’s interior.
Combining her Intermediate Fire Ability with the "Heart of Strange Fire," her scorching flames were already hot enough to melt metal.
The moment the intense heat hit the solid ice, it exploded into clouds of white steam. A SIZZLE echoed across the river as a dense web of cracks gradually appeared on the thick ice sheet.
Nina Jacobs felt a ceaseless flow of Superpower pouring out of her body.
Although she wasn’t worried about running out of Superpower, she still drank a "Superpower Recovery Potion."
An unknown amount of time passed. A few spots of thick ice began to rapidly soften and collapse, turning into churning, icy water. A crisscrossing network of melted channels spread out in all directions, as if carving up the entire ice field.
’It’s not enough.’
Nina Jacobs continued to channel her Superpower. The liquid flame below had already covered over a thousand square meters of ice, but she knew it was still too early.
The zombies on the opposite bank were still on the move. They seemed to have scented her location, and their speed had increased considerably.
Nina Jacobs remembered the "Liaoyuan Crystals" in her storage.
It was a weapon Chelsea Walsh had given her, capable of maximizing her Fire Element Superpower.
She still had quite a few "Liaoyuan Crystals" left.
Nina Jacobs took out three first, using her Wind Element Superpower to Control them and land them in three different locations.
As soon as the "Liaoyuan Crystals" came into contact with a Fire Element Superpower, they would activate instantly.
BOOM! A surging crimson inferno erupted on the ice. A sky-full of fiery waves crashed down upon the frozen surface.
Nina Jacobs’s eyes lit up. After the three Liaoyuan Crystals had burned for a full twenty-plus minutes, she threw out another eight.
Dazzling fireworks seemed to explode across the black ice, and the entire river surface trembled.
The layer of ice beneath the surface melted first, and chunks of floating ice could be seen breaking away and turning over.
Seeing this, a faint smile appeared on Nina Jacobs’s lips.
This was the scene that greeted Adrian Paige and his group when they arrived.
"The ice... is melting?"
Adrian Paige stared intently at the distant river.
They had been delayed on the way. Their helicopter had encountered Wind Zombies, but fortunately, his Wind Element Superpower helped them land without incident.
They had since switched to a heavy-duty truck, which could plow through the maximum number of zombies.
"There’s definitely someone here. Look at all these zombie corpses."
Myra Lawson was filled with a mix of surprise and curiosity.
The evacuation team she had dispatched wouldn’t pass this way. So who was helping them?
"This... could it be..."
Daniel Hale shot to his feet in excitement.
Many of the zombies by the roadside showed signs of being killed by a Fire Element Superpower. Moreover, he couldn’t sense anyone’s presence on the pier at all.
This meant that the person was a Fire Element Superpower User who had already absorbed a Mystic Ice Core.
’Such a dazzling Skill...’
"Nina Jacobs?"
Myra Lawson was startled.
She couldn’t think of anyone else who was so powerful and audacious, besides Nina Jacobs.
"Could it really be Nina?
No, wait, there are other people over there!"
Tears instantly streamed down Daniel Hale’s face. At the same time, his Spiritual Element Superpower detected not only a large number of zombies but also a human presence in one location.
"Someone you know?"
It was the first time Adrian Paige had heard the name.
It sounded more like a woman’s name.
"It’s Hale’s daughter,"
Heath Chandler replied.
Adrian Paige didn’t ask any more questions. Instead, he said, "Let’s go check out those two first."
Daniel Hale nodded. They soon arrived behind a derelict building.
The scene around them left everyone in the truck stunned.
The zombie corpses here were piled up like mountains. The surrounding ground looked as if it had been utterly devastated, a gruesome sight to behold.
An unfamiliar armored vehicle was parked there.
And two men were finishing off the few remaining zombies in the area.
Upon seeing a familiar figure among them, a look of joyful surprise immediately spread across Daniel Hale’s face.
"Wayne Warner!"
"Wayne Warner, where’s Nina?"
Daniel Hale scrambled out of the truck.
When Wayne Warner saw Daniel Hale, the wariness in his eyes gradually faded.
He slowly raised his arm and pointed toward the skyway in the distance.
"How many people did she bring? Does she need support? Is there a way to contact her?"
Myra Lawson quickly asked.
’How many people?’
Wayne Warner tilted his head, then held up one finger.
"She’s alone."
Just then, Nia walked over, holding a walkie-talkie.
"What did you say? Nina is all by herself?! This..."
Daniel Hale staggered back two steps, and Heath Chandler quickly steadied him.
Nina Jacobs also heard Daniel Hale and Myra Lawson’s voices over the walkie-talkie. After a few seconds of surprise, she spoke:
"Uncle Hale, what are you guys doing here?"
"Nina Jacobs, do you need support right now? If you do, I’ll return to base to mobilize them immediately. And how did you get up there?"
Myra Lawson’s hand, holding the walkie-talkie, was trembling slightly.
’Could it be that Nina Jacobs did all of this for the base?’
But Nina Jacobs’s voice from the other end was exceptionally calm. "Oh, the zombies were blocking the road, so we couldn’t get through."
"As for support, I don’t need any for now. I’m almost done here."
By now, a large fissure had opened up on the ice. Although there were still many zombies on the surface, they had stopped at the edge of the crack.
Before long, the ice beneath their feet also split, and a group of zombies fell one after another into the icy water.
For her, as long as she could stop the zombies on the ice from pouring onto the main road, they would be able to pass.
The zombies near the main road had also been mostly killed by Wayne Warner and the other two.
However, just then, Nina Jacobs heard an unfamiliar man’s voice come through the walkie-talkie:
"Please remain where you are. If you have enough Superpower, continue melting the ice.
We will dispatch more Fire Element Superpower Users and weapons from the base to support this location."
Adrian Paige didn’t know who this person was.
But he knew one thing: this Fire Element Superpower User was incredibly strong.
However, the person on the other end seemed to pause for a few seconds before asking in a lazy voice:
"Who are you? And what gives you the right to order me around?"
