Chapter 760: Chapter 757: Perhaps the First Step of Her Accepting Him
"Clara, are you hurt?"
"Clara, are you okay?"
One was Skylar Hayes, the other Sienna Hale.
Skylar Hayes was closer to Clara Grant. She turned, took her by the hands, and looked her all over. Sienna Hale was a bit farther away, but she was so startled that she immediately shot halfway out of her seat, ready to rush over to Clara.
Clara Grant quickly reassured her two worried mothers. "Mom, Mom, I’m fine. I’m not hurt."
Only then did the two women relax and let out sighs of relief.
At the thought of Jean Jarvis’s fate, the group fell silent once more.
After a long while, Theodore Quinn finally broke the silence. "I never would have expected something like this. It’s true what they say—life is stranger than fiction!"
Sienna Hale, who was sitting nearby, also shook her head. "Well, Jean Jarvis really dug her own grave. How could she get mixed up with a man like that and have an illegitimate daughter! Her own child was born out of wedlock, yet she had the audacity to frame Clara. What kind of person is she..."
But before she could finish, Theodore Quinn cut her off with a pointed cough.
Sienna Hale shot him a confused glance before it dawned on her: Marcus Jarvis was still in the room. No matter what, Jean Jarvis was his cousin, and it was rather inappropriate to be bad-mouthing her in his presence.
She fell quiet, a little awkwardly.
Marcus Jarvis noticed their discomfort and, after a moment’s thought, spoke up as well. "The Jean I used to know was very kind and sweet. I truly never imagined she would turn into the person she became.
"I know Jean did many terrible things. Everyone here has been deceived or hurt by her in some way, especially you, Skylar. Regardless, I am her cousin, so I would like to apologize to all of you on her behalf."
"Please, Mr. Jarvis, there’s no need for that." Theodore Quinn immediately waved his hand in dismissal.
"You two may be cousins, but sometimes even parents can’t control their own children’s actions, let alone a cousin. She is her own person, and you are yours. What she did has nothing to do with you. You shouldn’t blame yourself."
Marcus Jarvis stood up and looked at Theodore Quinn again. "Mr. Quinn, Jean was still my cousin, no matter what. I’d like to go see her one last time. Please excuse me, I must be going."
Theodore Quinn understood completely. "Of course. That’s only natural. Please, Mr. Jarvis, go on."
Skylar Hayes stood up as well. Just as Marcus Jarvis turned to leave, she said softly, "I’ll go with you."
Marcus Jarvis froze for a moment, then nodded. The two of them walked out of the main hall side by side.
Once they were out of the hall and in the car, Marcus Jarvis didn’t start the engine right away. He turned to Skylar Hayes, his lips parting hesitantly. "Skylar... after everything Jean did to you, don’t you hate her?"
’She’s even willing to come with me to see her one last time!’
Skylar Hayes turned to him with a gentle smile. "It’s all in the past. Besides, she’s gone now. What’s the point of hating her or holding a grudge?"
"Skylar, thank you." Marcus Jarvis nodded gratefully, reaching out to squeeze her hand tightly.
’Skylar is such a good woman. To have met her at my age... I’m truly lucky.’
Skylar Hayes glanced down at the large hand holding hers. She hesitated for a second but, for once, didn’t pull away as she usually did. Instead, she gave his hand a gentle squeeze in return and said softly, "Let’s get going."
Her reaction filled Marcus Jarvis with joy. ’She didn’t push me away. Maybe this is the first step... the beginning of her accepting me.’
