The more he thought about it, the more terrified he became. His heart pounded with dread, and he couldn’t stop himself from pulling her into a tight embrace.

A part of him wanted to scold her for not thinking of her own safety when danger struck. But he couldn’t bring himself to say a word. Instead, he just held her close, trying to soothe the overwhelming fear in his own heart.

Nestled in his arms, Clara’s heart gradually began to settle. ’It’s a good thing he got here in time to save me,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, I might have never seen him again.’

Cedric Grant finally snapped out of his daze. He rushed over to the two of them, still locked in their embrace, and asked, "Clara, are you okay?"

Only then did Clara remember they weren’t alone. A wave of self-consciousness washed over her, and she pulled away from Seth’s embrace. Using his hand for support, she got to her feet and shook her head at Cedric. "I’m fine."

Cedric glanced at Adam Warren, who was slumped on the floor against a nearby wall. He turned back to Clara and said, "Thank you so much for what you did just now, Clara. If you hadn’t stopped him in time, I’m afraid I would’ve..."

Clara had reacted in an instant; she’d clearly rushed to save him without a second thought. Cedric was suddenly overwhelmed with emotion. ’This is what it’s like to have a real daughter,’ he thought. ’Someone who rushes to save you in a moment of danger, without any regard for her own safety!’

Clara looked at him but didn’t respond.

Seth’s eyes swept around the room, and he began to piece together what had happened. He frowned and asked, "Has anyone called the police?"

"No, don’t call the police!"

Before Clara or Cedric had a chance to answer, Jean Jarvis suddenly spoke up, her voice weak.

When Clara had mentioned calling the police earlier, she’d wanted to stop her, but Adam Warren attacked before she had the chance.

’If they call the police, word of what happened today is bound to get out. When that happens, Chloe will be completely humiliated. She’s still so young, how will she be able to live with herself?’

’No, they absolutely cannot call the police!’

"Not call the police?" Cedric shot back without hesitation. "Someone could be dead! How can we not report something this serious? You’re the one who killed him; it has nothing to do with us. If we don’t call the police, they might end up suspecting me, Clara, and Seth!"

"Hah." Jean let out a scornful laugh, but the movement must have jarred her wound. She pressed a hand to the injury, her smile vanishing. She paused for a moment before continuing.

"Cedric Grant, are you trying to wash your hands of this? Now that... you know Chloe isn’t your... your daughter, you’ve decided you don’t have to think about her at all? That you don’t... have to care anymore, is that it?"

"She... she still called you her father for over twenty years! Can’t you grant her even this last bit of dignity? If people find... find out what happened to her, and the truth about who she is, how is she supposed to ever show her face in Novaria... ever again?"

"Jean, so *now* you’re worried about your daughter’s reputation? Where was all this concern when you were slandering Clara, calling her a bastard? Did you ever stop to think about how *she* would be able to show her face in Novaria? Did you ever once think about *her* dignity?"

"So... so now you’re going to get justice for *your*... daughter? I suppose we... the two of us, we aren’t your problem... your stumbling block... anymore."

"You can finally devote all your energy to pleasing them. You can finally, openly... bring Skylar... Skylar Hayes back into the Grant Family, and you three can have your happy little reunion!"

As Jean spoke, she turned her head to look at Chloe. She wanted to cover her daughter’s exposed body, but she didn’t have the strength. All she could do was watch as her daughter lay there, exposed to everyone’s gaze.
