Chapter 690: Chapter 687: A Sudden Disturbance (16)

Of everyone present, Autumn Shelby and Chloe Grant were the most worried.

They had gone to so much trouble to set this trap and stage this grand drama. How could they let Sarah Shelby ruin it all!

Autumn Shelby and Chloe Grant exchanged a look from across the room. After receiving the message in Autumn’s gaze, Chloe nodded, then turned to Sarah Shelby and spoke.

"Sarah Shelby, in that recording, you clearly said it was Clara Grant. So how come it’s suddenly you now? You two... what kind of stunt are you pulling? You’re confusing all of us."

Sarah Shelby looked at her, then lowered her gaze and secretly gritted her teeth. "The reason I said that in the recording was because I was jealous of her. I’m jealous of Clara Grant!

Why should she be the one to have her own romance? Why should she get to have her own happiness? Why does *she* get to marry for love?

So, I envied her. I deliberately pretended I was her. I just wanted her to lose everything she had!"

After Sarah Shelby finished speaking, Clara Grant shook her head, looking at her pleadingly. She started to walk forward, wanting to grab her hand. "No, Sarah..."

She knew Sarah felt that her words had ruined her, and that she was now trying to help clear her name. ’But how could she be so foolish?’

’If she helps me escape the blame, what about her?’

’How will she face Ewan Stratton? How will she maintain her standing in the Stratton Family?’

But Sarah Shelby took a step back, dodging her outstretched hand. Her gaze fell on a distant point, deliberately avoiding looking at her.

"Then why are you stepping forward to clear her name now?" Seeing how difficult Sarah was to handle, Chloe Grant grew annoyed, but she couldn’t let it show. She suppressed her emotions and asked again.

"I regret it!" Sarah Shelby’s eyes locked onto her face. She tilted her chin up and raised an eyebrow, her expression screaming, ’I regret it, so what are you going to do about it?’ "I regretted it, so I decided to step forward and clear things up for her."

"No, no, no, that person was me, not Sarah. I admit it. The one in the recording was me. It was me."

The moment she finished, Clara Grant suddenly spoke up, taking the blame back onto herself.

She couldn’t let Sarah take the fall for her. Married to a man like Ewan Stratton, her life was already hard enough. She couldn’t let things get even worse for her.

The crowd was once again on the edge of their seats. They had seen people fight for credit, but never seen them fight to take the blame. This story was becoming both bafflingly complex and incredibly exciting.

"Clara, what are you fighting me for? This isn’t something good. I was the one who liked Miles Quinn all along. I was the one who asked him to the hotel." Sarah Shelby’s face appeared calm, but her eyes held a silent plea as she looked at Clara Grant.

Clara Grant understood. Sarah didn’t want her to keep arguing.

But...

"Sarah..."

"Proof? What proof do you have that it was you and not Clara Grant?" Seeing the two of them argue back and forth, Chloe Grant finally lost her patience, her tone becoming aggressive.

"Proof? Well, you don’t have any proof that it was Clara Grant who went to the hotel back then, either!"

"What do you mean I don’t? I heard you say those words with my own ears, and I’m the one who made that recording..."

At this, Chloe Grant suddenly realized she’d let it slip and stopped in a panic.

Clara Grant’s head snapped toward her. "So, does that mean you’re also the one who played this recording today?"

’Heh. Chloe Grant really does hate me to the bone. She won’t rest until she’s utterly destroyed me.’

"I..."

Just as Chloe Grant stammered out a single word, Miles Quinn, who had been silent the entire time, seemed to snap out of his daze and shouted, "Stop arguing!"
