Chapter 669: Chapter 666: Follow That Car

"Hey, hey, hey, Clara, look!" While they were eating, Sarah Shelby suddenly tapped Clara’s hand and pointed behind her. "Those two little guys over there are so cute."

Clara Grant turned to look and saw a pair of twin boys, probably a teacher’s kids. They were sturdy and chubby-cheeked—definitely cute.

After watching for a moment, she turned back. "Let me tell you," she said, "I met a little guy even cuter than them, and we had an instant connection. In fact, I spent the whole day playing with him yesterday and even celebrated his very first birthday with him."

Clara then told Sarah the whole story—how she had met Sierra Sutton, how they had bumped into each other again yesterday, how much the baby seemed to like her, and everything else that had happened. In the end, she sighed and added,

"It’s just a shame his own mother was absent for his birthday yesterday. It’s such a pity for him. But thankfully, he has a good father. That man is a genuinely good person."

"What?" Sarah was instantly aghast. "You actually spent the whole day with a strange man and his kid you’d only met once? And you went back to their hotel, celebrated his birthday, ate cake with them, and the kid even called you ’Mama’?!"

Uh...

Clara Grant felt that Sarah’s focus was a bit off. She had only wanted to talk about how cute the baby was and how sad it was that his mother wasn’t there for his birthday.

"So, does your Seth know about this?" Sarah asked again.

Clara scratched her hair in embarrassment. "Yesterday, while I was with them, Seth called me. I figured it was too complicated to explain over the phone, so I just let him assume I was out shopping with you."

"I meant to explain when I got back last night, but I was so tired I fell asleep before I got the chance. And this morning..."

Before she could finish, Sarah held up a hand to stop her. "So, in short, you haven’t told him yet, right?"

Clara nodded.

"It’s better that you didn’t. Just let him keep thinking you were with me. I mean, think about it. What man wouldn’t let his mind run wild after finding out his wife spent a whole day with another man and his kid?"

"Even if you tell him you don’t really know them and you only stayed because the kid was cute and you felt sorry for him, will Seth believe you? If he doesn’t, you’ll just end up fighting, won’t you? And even if he acts like he believes you, he’ll still be suspicious deep down, right? That would affect your relationship."

"So, just drop the matter here and let him keep believing the lie. I’m in on it now anyway, so if it ever comes up, I can back you up."

Clara said hesitantly, "I don’t know... Is that really a good idea?"

"What’s wrong with it? Sometimes a couple needs little white lies for the relationship to last. If you don’t want any problems to pop up between you and Seth, you should listen to me."

Clara didn’t nod, but she didn’t argue the point either.

...

After her class ended, Chloe Grant got right into her car and drove toward the school gate.

Agitated by Clara Grant, she felt she needed an even greater thrill to distract her.

She dialed a number as she drove. "Hey. Something came up yesterday, and I know it cut the fun short. Let’s go again today, my treat... All right, see you at the usual place soon."

Hanging up, she stepped on the gas, and her car sped out of the school gates.

In a taxi, a man in a baseball cap said to the driver, "See that car? Tail it."

The driver agreed and quickly followed.
