Chapter 668: Chapter 665: I Didn’t Go to Eat, and They’re Actually Happy?

"What? I’m already at school for class." Clara smiled and pouted. "Why didn’t you wake me up when you left? You almost made me late."

"I saw you sleeping so soundly, I couldn’t bear to wake you. Besides, so what if you were late? You’re the great First Young Mistress Quinn. What’s the school going to do to you?" Seth’s voice was light and nonchalant.

"Aren’t you known for being strict with your subordinates? When did you become so laid-back?"

"You’re not my subordinate. You’re my wife. Wives are meant to be spoiled, not held to strict standards."

Clara scoffed, but she felt warm and fuzzy inside. Then she remembered she hadn’t gone to the main house for breakfast and asked nervously, "Oh, right. I didn’t have breakfast with Mom and Dad today. They... weren’t mad, were they?"

"No, they were actually pretty happy about it."

Seth’s words left Clara a little baffled. ’Huh? I didn’t go for breakfast, and they were happy? What does that mean? Does this mean all those other times I ate with them, Dad’s happiness was just an act? That he actually doesn’t want to see me at meals at all?’

Otherwise, she had broken the family rules by not joining them for breakfast. Why would they be happy instead of angry?

Clara felt quite dejected at the thought.

"Silly girl, what’s going through your head?" Seth was defeated by her train of thought. "They were happy because I told them the reason you didn’t get up for breakfast was that you were exhausted from spending all day shopping for Dad’s sixtieth birthday present."

Clara let out a breath and grumbled, "Then could you try not to leave me hanging? Are you trying to scare me to death?"

"What?" The amusement in Seth’s voice grew thicker. "That worried your in-laws won’t like you?"

"Of course. As a daughter-in-law, I have to win my in-laws’ favor. But... is it really okay for you to cover for me like that? I haven’t actually found a suitable gift for Dad," Clara said, a little worried.

"Didn’t I tell you yesterday? I’ll take care of the gift. You don’t have to worry about it."

"Huh? Did you?" Clara scratched her head, recalling that they had indeed discussed this before she fell asleep. She gave a sheepish laugh. "I forgot."

Just then, she remembered she needed to tell him about what happened yesterday. But as she opened her mouth to speak, the classroom door swung open, and the teacher walked in. The class bell rang immediately after.

Clara bent over, covered her mouth with her hand, and spoke into the phone, "Seth, I can’t talk anymore. Class is starting. I’m hanging up."

"Alright, go on to class. After you’re done this afternoon, I’ll come with you to have dinner with Mom," Seth said before hanging up.

...

After class, Clara lingered for a moment to pack her books. Once she was done, she picked up her bag and was about to leave when she heard someone call her name from the doorway. She looked up and saw Sarah Shelby.

Clara hurried out of the classroom. Surprised to see that Sarah didn’t have her bodyguards with her, she grinned and said, "Oh? Where are your bodyguards? Did they get pulled?"

Sarah laughed too, slinging an arm over Clara’s shoulder. "They’re gone. After a few days, besides you tackling me a couple of times, nobody else seems to have any designs on me. So Ewan Stratton probably thought, ’Well, she can’t run away, and nobody’s making a move on her anyway. Isn’t it a waste to have bodyguards following her every day?’ And just like that, he pulled them."

Clara pretended to look her up and down, then said with mock seriousness, "Hmm, it really is a waste."

"Hey, is that your roundabout way of calling me ugly?" Sarah slapped her on the shoulder. "I may not be a looker, but I’m rich. C’mon, I’ll treat you to a meal."

Clara’s eyes immediately lit up like stars. "Really? Where are we going?"

"The cafeteria."

Clara immediately curled her lip. "Pfft!"

"Look at you," Sarah laughed. "It’s like you haven’t had a good meal in ages. Your Seth is so rich, doesn’t he take you out for nice food?"

"How could I bear to make my husband take me out for fancy meals all the time? If I’m going to fleece someone, it should be my bestie," Clara said with a laugh.

The two of them walked toward the school cafeteria, chatting and laughing.
