Chapter 653: Chapter 650: At Worst, We Go Our Separate Ways

The meal, which had felt like a silent battlefield, finally ended. The group walked out of the restaurant.

Cedric Grant, who had nearly misspoken, didn’t dare say anything more to Skylar Hayes and Clara. He silently followed Jean into their car.

He started the car, and the moment they were out of sight of Marcus Jarvis and the others, Cedric Grant couldn’t wait to ask Jean, "Jean, what did your cousin say?"

They had been married for so long, so of course he knew Jean. He knew that when she had made an excuse to pull Marcus Jarvis away from the table earlier, it was to discuss that very matter.

Jean was simmering with anger and had nowhere to vent it, so she took the opportunity to unleash it all on him. "You have some nerve! Cedric Grant, do you even care about me and Chloe anymore?

’Are you only thinking about fawning over Skylar Hayes and Clara? Only thinking about being Seth Quinn’s father-in-law, about being an in-law to the Quinn family?

’Just look at how you acted when you saw Skylar Hayes. You got completely carried away, didn’t you? I told you, my cousin is the one who knows the most about that whole affair, and yet you still had the nerve to show off your great relationship with Theodore Quinn right in front of him!’"

On the receiving end of her tirade, Cedric Grant still tried to defend himself. "It’s a good thing it was us who almost slipped up today. At least we can do some damage control. If your cousin had heard about it from the Quinn family when we weren’t there, he might have just told them the truth.

’After all, given his relationship with Skylar Hayes, he’s bound to meet the Quinn family sooner or later.’"

"Oh? You sound awfully bitter," Jean said sarcastically, giving him a sidelong glance. "Are you jealous that my cousin is with Skylar Hayes?"

"What do I have to be jealous about? You know it’s not like I’m genuinely trying to be nice to her. I’m doing all of this for the Grant family, so you and Chloe can have a good life! Jean, just hurry up and tell me, what exactly did your cousin say? Will he keep our secret?"

"I begged him, so of course he agreed. But, Cedric Grant, you’d better understand one thing. I’m the one who has leverage over you. If you dare do anything to wrong me and our daughter, I’ll tell Theodore Quinn the whole truth. Worst-case scenario, we’ll just go our separate ways."

Cedric Grant breathed a sigh of relief. He patted her hand reassuringly. "Don’t worry, why would I ever wrong you and our daughter? Chloe is my own daughter. If I don’t dote on her, who will?"

Jean still looked furious, but she said nothing more and turned to stare out the window.

...

"Clara, come home with me," Skylar Hayes said to Clara at the restaurant entrance.

"Uh..." Clara blinked. "Mom, I have a class this afternoon, so I need to get back to school. Seth is busy at the office and has to go back too. You should let Uncle Jarvis take you home."

Skylar Hayes glanced at Marcus Jarvis, her expression neutral. Without saying a word, she turned her head to the side.

Clara took the opportunity to quietly give Marcus Jarvis a meaningful look. "Uncle Jarvis, have a good talk with my mom," she murmured. "She isn’t an unreasonable person. She’s just afraid of being hurt."

Marcus Jarvis nodded at her, showing that he understood.

Clara said goodbye to Skylar Hayes once more before pulling Seth into their car and leaving.

Skylar Hayes watched their car drive off before turning back to Marcus Jarvis. "I’ll just get a taxi," she said coolly. "You’re busy, so you should go."

With that, she started walking toward the curb to hail a taxi.

Marcus Jarvis quickly caught her by the arm. "Skylar, let’s talk," he said sincerely.

Skylar Hayes gently pushed his hand away. "I’m a little tired today," she said. "Whatever it is, let’s talk another time."

"Skylar, it’s better to talk things out sooner rather than later," Marcus persisted. "Skylar, you’re not distancing yourself from me just because Jean is my cousin, are you?"
