A Night of Desire

Chapter 652: Chapter 649: Watch Your Step
Jean could no longer hold back. She suddenly stood up and said to Marcus, "Cousin, I just remembered—I have some family business to discuss with you in private."
With that, she walked over to Marcus, pulled him to his feet, and tossed a line to the others. "You all go ahead and eat. We’ll be right back."
Once she had pulled Marcus to a quiet corner, Jean let go of his arm. Her eyes shifted nervously as she looked at him and whispered, "Cousin..."
"Jean," Marcus finally said after a moment’s silence, "As I recall, Theodore Quinn only fell in the water that one time. I’ve never heard about it happening again. So, when exactly did Cedric Grant save his life?"
As if afraid of being overheard, Jean glanced back toward the dining table and said anxiously, "Cou-cousin, keep your voice down! Don’t let anyone hear you."
Marcus’s expression grew even more stern. "So you’re telling me you really used that incident from all those years ago to deceive Theodore Quinn? You passed Cedric Grant off as his savior?
Jean, how could you lie about something like that? Taking credit for something he never did, parading him around under the title of a savior... Don’t you feel the least bit guilty?"
"Cousin, please, just listen to me. Cedric’s business was struggling back then, and we couldn’t find anyone to help us.
So I... I suddenly remembered the incident when Theodore Quinn fell into the water. I told Cedric all the details, and then I had him go to Theodore and claim the title of his savior."
Marcus knew that he was the one who understood the incident best. He had recounted it to Jean in great detail back then, so it made sense that many of the specifics lined up. Theodore Quinn would have had no reason to be suspicious.
Jean continued, "But cousin, even though we lied about his identity, we haven’t done anything outrageous. The Quinn family hasn’t given us any huge favors. At most... at most, they’ve passed some small business deals our way, or partnered with us..."
"So what other favors did you want from them? Saving someone’s life isn’t about getting a reward, is it? And besides, you’re impostors—it’s all a lie!" Marcus was suddenly disappointed in the cousin he had once been so close to.
"Cousin, please, I’m begging you, you can’t expose us. If you do, the Quinn family will make our lives miserable. I promise, we’ll never bother the Quinns again by claiming to be Theodore’s savior. I swear, Cousin, I’m begging you."
Jean grabbed Marcus’s arm, pleading relentlessly.
"Besides, Clara Grant is married to Seth Quinn now. Even though she isn’t Cedric’s biological daughter, he’s been a father to her for more than twenty years.
If the Quinns find out that their daughter-in-law has a lying, deceitful father, it will drag her down, too. Cousin, you know how it is with these powerful families—reputation is everything to them."
Marcus didn’t speak. Though he had only recently returned to the country and didn’t know the Quinns well, he couldn’t deny that Jean had a point.
"Jean, since you’re my cousin, I won’t expose this. But you have to promise me you’ll behave yourselves from now on."
Hearing him agree, Jean breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Cousin. Don’t worry, we will."
’As long as he doesn’t expose us, everything will be fine.’ She was still counting on Chloe to marry Miles Quinn. If Cedric’s fake "savior" identity were to be exposed now, they would lose any leverage they had left with the Quinn family.
