Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 474: Mom, I Brought Your Daughter-in-Law to See You
It was a while before Quentin Blackwood came out.
Ivy Sherwood had been waiting at the door the whole time, her eyes filled with worry.
"Are you okay?" Ivy Sherwood asked, immediately stepping forward when she saw him emerge.
"Still alive. Not dead yet," Quentin Blackwood said, his voice hoarse.
"Who’s asking about Caleb Blackwood? I’m asking about you!" ’Whether Caleb Blackwood is alive or dead has nothing to do with me.’
Quentin Blackwood lowered his gaze to look at her. His sinking heart seemed to slowly float back up.
’With her by my side, it doesn’t seem to hurt so much anymore.’
"I want to go see my mother." Quentin Blackwood’s eyes were intense, a vast expanse of darkness tinged with sorrow.
Ivy Sherwood immediately took his hand. "I’ll go with you."
「...」
In a cemetery in the suburbs, white roses were placed before a gravestone.
On the tombstone was a photo of a gentle, beautiful woman, forever frozen in her twenties.
Quentin Blackwood’s mother had been very beautiful; otherwise, that old beast wouldn’t have set his sights on her and forced himself on her.
A person’s life is meant to be long, but they had both passed away in their prime.
Quentin Blackwood just stared quietly at the woman’s picture, not saying a word.
All the while, his hand was still holding Ivy Sherwood’s.
It was Ivy Sherwood who spoke first. "Hello, ma’am. Quentin and I are here to see you."
"I don’t know if you remember me, but I’m Ivy Sherwood. My mother was a good friend of yours."
Ivy Sherwood’s voice was clear with a hint of sweetness. Her eyes curved into crescents as she smiled, a beautiful sight.
Ivy Sherwood must have met Quentin Blackwood’s mother before, but she’d been too young at the time, probably only about five years old, so her memory was fuzzy.
Quentin Blackwood’s lips moved, his expression incredibly complex.
"Mom, I..." His voice caught, thick with emotion.
He seemed to want to say something but didn’t know how to express it.
Ivy Sherwood patted his back. "You probably haven’t been to see your mother in a long time. Take your time. I’ll be over there."
Quentin Blackwood was unwilling to let go of her hand. Ivy Sherwood gave his a gentle squeeze, reassuring him. "I’ll just be nearby. Call me if you need anything."
Ivy Sherwood’s eyes grew a little misty as well. She understood this feeling; being separated from a loved one was truly painful.
But she felt Quentin Blackwood would have a lot to say to his mother, and it wasn’t her place to listen in.
Ivy Sherwood walked a short distance away, but Quentin Blackwood’s gaze followed her, not leaving her for a long time.
"Mom, I brought your daughter-in-law to see you." His hand gently caressed the photo.
He was incredibly thankful that he had returned to Lustre and met Ivy Sherwood.
"She’s the woman I love. I only found out today that you had already picked her out for me. We mother and son really do have the same excellent taste. She’s carrying my baby now. You’re going to be a grandmother."
"Mom, did you see what happened with the Blackwood Family today? What goes around comes around. Their karma has finally arrived. The worst is yet to come for the Blackwoods. Let’s watch it happen together."
"I’m doing well now. I have someone by my side, so I won’t be lonely anymore. You have to be well over there, too."
Quentin Blackwood was not a man who was good at expressing himself. Even if a thousand thoughts were sailing through his mind, he couldn’t easily put them into words.
In those few simple sentences, more than half were about Ivy Sherwood, yet they conveyed so much.
He looked toward Ivy again. "And tell Aunt Mercer for me that she can rest easy leaving her daughter with me."
Ivy Sherwood stood off to the side, looking at the countless gravestones that filled most of the cemetery. Each one represented a family’s farewell.
’It’s a shame that a person’s life is so short. What are the chances that two people get to walk through it all together?’
"What are you thinking about?" A man’s voice came from behind her.
Ivy Sherwood turned to find Quentin Blackwood right behind her.
Quentin Blackwood wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder and lightly sniffing her scent.
Her scent was so reassuring, as if it could soothe anything.
"You’re done talking to Mom so soon?"
Quentin Blackwood paused. Ivy hadn’t said "your mom," she had called her "Mom."
"Yeah. I just wanted to tell her that the Blackwood Family is finished now, so she can rest in peace."
Ivy Sherwood tilted her head. "Then I’m going to go whisper a few secrets to her, too. No eavesdropping."
Ivy Sherwood went to the gravestone, knelt, and leaned in, cupping her hand over her mouth. She really did look like she was sharing a secret.
"Ma’am, thank you for raising such an outstanding son. Quentin is a really good man. You can rest easy from now on. I’ll take care of him for you."
Watching her from a distance, Quentin Blackwood couldn’t help but smile. His heart and his eyes were filled with her.
’She’s truly wonderful. So wonderful that I feel like I don’t deserve her.’
’She must be a gift from the heavens, a treasure I could only have dreamed of.’
Ivy Sherwood quickly finished whispering her secrets, then walked over to Quentin Blackwood and pulled him along. "Let’s stay with her a little longer."
Ivy Sherwood and Quentin Blackwood stayed there until dusk. They didn’t say much, but some things didn’t need words to be understood.
As they left the cemetery and got into the car, Quentin Blackwood said, "I’ll take you home."
Ivy Sherwood shook her head. "I don’t want to go home."
"Then where do you want to go? I’ll go with you."
"Okay. I want to go to Norhaven."
Quentin Blackwood froze. "Norhaven?"
"Mhm, can we?" Her eyes sparkled, like a beam of light shining straight into his heart.
"Of course we can."
While comforting Quentin Blackwood that afternoon, Ivy Sherwood had learned that his mother used to love gazing at the priceless piece of land known as Norhaven. That was why, once he had the means, Quentin had spent a fortune to buy the property and build a classical Chinese garden there.
As the car neared Norhaven, Quentin Blackwood called ahead and told the butler to prepare a meal. Ivy Sherwood had been with him all day and hadn’t eaten a thing.
After they finished eating, Ivy Sherwood told Quentin Blackwood to go wash up first.
"Come with me."
"No way. You use the master bathroom, and I’ll use the guest one. But you should still have some of my clothes here, right?"
"Of course."
The clothes Quentin Blackwood had prepared for her before were all still there; he’d never thrown them out. They were all Ivy Sherwood’s.
Ivy Sherwood grabbed some clothes and was about to head to the guest bedroom when Quentin Blackwood gently pushed her toward the master suite. "You use this one. I’ll go to another bathroom."
Although Quentin Blackwood wanted to shower with Ivy Sherwood, he knew that if they did, one thing would inevitably lead to another.
’Better restrain myself for now.’
Ivy Sherwood took a quick shower and dried her hair, but Quentin Blackwood still hadn’t come out.
Ivy Sherwood sat in the bedroom for a while. This room was once filled with traces of their lovemaking.
Edie sent Ivy Sherwood a message, saying there was a file she needed to look at right away. Since Ivy didn’t have her computer with her, she had to go to Quentin Blackwood’s study.
Sitting in Quentin Blackwood’s chair, Ivy Sherwood was reminded of the time Caleb Blackwood had ambushed them, and she’d had to hide under this very desk.
