Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 468: The Look of Love Can’t Be Hidden
Elijah Hawthorne registered her at the hospital and insisted they give her a full-body checkup.
Fortunately, it turned out to be nothing serious. She had only inhaled a knockout drug and would probably take some time to wake up.
Elijah Hawthorne asked, "Doesn’t she need some kind of medicine?"
The doctor said, "We don’t recommend medication for pregnant women. Your girlfriend will wake up on her own shortly."
Elijah Hawthorne froze. ’Ivy Sherwood is pregnant?’
’With Quentin Blackwood’s child?’
Ivy Sherwood’s phone was also ringing nonstop. Elijah Hawthorne picked it up and saw it was a call from Quentin Blackwood.
Elijah didn’t answer. Soon, his own phone started ringing.
’So damn annoying. It’s Quentin again!’
"What do you want?" Elijah’s tone was anything but pleasant.
"How is Ivy Sherwood?" Quentin’s voice was laced with anxiety. He was already on his way to the airport.
When he got the call from his bodyguards, Quentin could barely breathe.
He had arranged for people to protect Ivy secretly, but they had still failed. An accident had nearly occurred.
If Elijah Hawthorne hadn’t been there, Quentin didn’t even dare to imagine the consequences.
"She’s at the hospital. Still hasn’t woken up."
"For this, I owe you one."
"Don’t," Elijah refused.
A favor from Quentin Blackwood was no small thing. When it came time to repay it, you could ask for almost anything from him. Quentin never willingly put himself in anyone’s debt, so for him to say this... it seemed he truly cared about Ivy Sherwood.
Elijah said, "Even if someone owes me, it should be Ivy Sherwood. Who are you to owe me anything on her behalf?"
"Don’t get any improper ideas about Ivy Sherwood. She’s my woman!"
"I’ve never believed she belongs to anyone. She belongs to herself. Quentin, since you can’t protect her properly, you should let go and let someone more capable take over."
Quentin shot back, "And who’s the more capable person? You?"
"Elijah Hawthorne, I know you don’t like Ivy. You’re just trying to get at me. I’ll give you anything you want, whether it’s a project or a piece of land, as long as you stop having designs on Ivy."
Elijah hadn’t expected Quentin to make such a concession. In the past, he would have agreed instantly.
But now...
Elijah glanced at the woman on the bed. He wasn’t sure what he felt for Ivy Sherwood himself.
’Maybe it’s not love yet, but being with her just feels... comfortable.’
’There’s an indescribable quality about this woman. Even though she was afraid of me before, that defiant spirit of hers is truly rare. A capable person is worthy of admiration.’
"How do you know I don’t like Ivy Sherwood?" Elijah retorted.
"Quentin, me saving Ivy has nothing to do with you. This is between her and me. I don’t want to discuss this with you. I’m hanging up."
With that, Elijah hung up the phone.
Quentin was left speechless.
On his way to the airport, Quentin had already ordered his men to seize Caleb Blackwood.
To dare lay a hand on Ivy Sherwood... Caleb Blackwood was simply courting death.
He hadn’t made a move against the Blackwood Family before, not out of any lingering affection, but because he wanted to watch them disappear bit by bit. He wanted Caleb Blackwood to watch helplessly as the family crumbled in his hands.
But now, he truly wanted to kill Caleb Blackwood.
However, all of that would have to wait until he returned and saw Ivy.
Knowing Ivy was safe now, he could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
But the thought of that troublesome man, Elijah Hawthorne, gave him another headache.
’But thankfully, Ivy likes me. Elijah doesn’t stand a chance.’
...
A short while later, Ivy Sherwood woke up.
Seeing Elijah Hawthorne and her surroundings, she patted her dizzy head.
"Was I kidnapped? And you saved me."
"Mm. No need for words of gratitude. I’m a man who prefers practical actions. For example, you could pledge yourself to me."
Ivy was speechless.
’This man really has no sense of humility.’
"Thank you, Elijah Hawthorne."
"I just said I hate hearing all that empty flattery. Forget it. Eat this." Elijah handed her the plain congee he had made.
"What’s this?" Ivy took it. "Congee?"
But she had already eaten breakfast.
"Yeah." Elijah’s expression was placid. He even turned his face to look outside.
"You bought this?" Ivy wasn’t sure. Who would buy just plain congee?
’With no toppings or flavor, it probably won’t taste very good.’
"Yeah. Hurry up and eat it," Elijah urged, feeling a little nervous inside.
After all, this was Young Master Hawthorne’s first time cooking, even if the results weren’t particularly impressive.
"But I already had breakfast."
Even though Quentin wasn’t here, he had people from Norhaven deliver it early in the morning.
"Have you eaten? If not, why don’t you have it?" Ivy offered it back to him.
Elijah’s expression turned cold. "If you don’t want to eat it, just throw it away."
Ivy was speechless.
’Why is his way of speaking and acting so similar to that other man’s? They really are sworn enemies.’
Ivy assumed Elijah had kindly bought it for her after seeing her pass out. She opened it. "Alright, I’ll have a sip."
Elijah watched her, his tone laced with a tension he himself didn’t notice. "How is it?"
"It tastes like... plain congee. Why don’t you try some?" Ivy was about to offer him the spoon, but then she remembered she had already used it. She and Elijah didn’t have that kind of relationship, and besides, she had a quasi-boyfriend now. It wouldn’t be appropriate.
Ivy pulled her hand back. "Actually, never mind. But thank you, Elijah. Thanks for saving me, and thanks for buying me congee."
To be polite, Ivy took another sip.
"Alright, enough with the thanks. If you’re not tired of saying it, I’m tired of hearing it. If you don’t want to eat it, don’t force yourself. Just get some rest."
Elijah snatched the congee from Ivy’s hands.
"Hey—" Before Ivy could say anything else, he tossed it directly into the nearby trash can. She didn’t even have time to stop him.
"By the way, do you know who tried to kidnap me?" Ivy steered the conversation back to the important matter.
"They said they were under orders from Caleb Blackwood."
"Caleb Blackwood?"
Ivy frowned. Although her feud with the Blackwood Family wasn’t new, why would Caleb Blackwood suddenly make a move?
Ivy picked up her phone to check on the Blackwood Family’s recent activities, and that’s when she saw the numerous missed calls from Quentin.
’Why did he call me so many times?’
Ivy quickly dialed Quentin’s number, but a notification said his phone was turned off.
Ivy started to panic. ’Why is Quentin’s phone off? Did something happen?’
Beside her, Elijah Hawthorne saw her expression. The worry and panic were genuine. When you like someone, you can’t hide it in your eyes. It was obvious that Ivy liked Quentin—that’s why she called him back immediately, why she was so worried about him.
At that moment, an unfamiliar feeling surged through Elijah’s heart, a strange and indescribable sensation.
"Alright, stop calling. He’s probably on a plane. You won’t get through."
