World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 344: Marching To Victory
The next morning, the whole of Eternal Night City was buzzing.
The leading echelon had returned, and everyone was hyped up. After all, news had already spread that the leader would be launching a direct attack against their recent oppressor.
The large camp located in Park Slope had been a real menace, oftentimes sabotaging teams that had been sent out to scavenge for more food provisions, or even snatching mutated beast corpses from small hunter groups.
Marie had been cautious about them, as she knew she wouldn’t be able to defend the city against two Tier Two Evolvers. So, she had been unable to launch any attack on the thieves who only knew how to steal.
She had been patient. Unfortunately for them, Leon wasn’t patient at all. His city was being harassed by a foreign group.
Their fate had already been decided from the moment they did that.
Early in the morning, he gathered about fifty percent of the city’s army, along with the members of the Titanbreaker Legion, leading them straight to Park Slope.
About a thousand Evolvers marched through Flatbush, mowing down the zombies and mutated beasts that dared block their paths. Leon stood at the front, with Swampy carrying him on its back.
Fel had healed it a while ago, and now, the beast was back to full strength. Although it wasn’t highly intelligent, it knew they were going back to fight those who had bullied and injured it days ago.
Flanking the mutated crocodile were four other mutated beasts tamed by Richard. One was the mutated monkey with long claws, another was the large black bird that flew in the air. The other two were Little East and Little West; the mutated cat and the mutated fox.
Little East was already a Tier Two mutated beast, while the others had also reached the peak of Tier One.
Richard rode on the back of the cat that was now even larger than a tiger, his expression serious. Miguel walked beside him, his hammer slung against his shoulder.
"Hey, Richard, are you sure you don’t want me to join you on that mount?"
Richard scowled at him, and so did the black cat. Miguel stiffened for a moment, then laughed awkwardly.
"Haha, don’t mind me. I was just joking."
Walking beside Selene, Gwen smiled and asked, "Was your journey to another world interesting?"
Selene glanced at her, then shrugged. "That depends on your perception of interesting. If being unconscious and carried by someone who’s being hunted counts as interesting, then yes. It is."
Gwen fell silent for a moment, then smiled again. "As long as I don’t die, it is interesting. In fact, it’s a little bit romantic."
Selene turned to her, speechless. "You... you only said that because it’s him, isn’t it? Sigh, you lovestruck thing."
Gwen chuckled a little, then said with a resigned smile, "Regardless, I’m glad that you returned safely."
Selene nodded, a smile forming on her face. "I’m glad you’re okay too. I almost thought I’d never see you again."
"Eh...?" Gwen’s lips parted in surprise. "Did something else happen?"
Selene closed her eyes. "We’ll talk about it later, but I sincerely almost lost my life fighting."
Gwen fell silent, realizing she wasn’t supposed to feel jealous at all. Perhaps, if she had followed Leon, she would have lost her life instead.
Walking behind them, Reymond had his eyes fixed on Selene’s back while his thoughts wandered.
’Is it me... or has Selene grown distant?’
She hadn’t really said a thing to him, and he didn’t really know if he was actually overthinking it. She had been speaking to Gwen, but not him.
’Why...? Did I do something wrong?’
Shaking his head, he decided to abandon the thoughts for now. ’I guess we’ll settle that after this fight. I also want to see what Leon will do to those people.’
It took them a few hours to reach the camp, and when they finally did, the Park Slope Camp was already prepared.
A thick line of Evolvers stood outside the camp walls, their expressions proud and arrogant.
Sitting on a couch that had been placed on the walls, the Camp Leader blew smoke from his lips, relishing the taste of the cigarette in his mouth.
"Ah... these bastards actually came. Looks like the information wasn’t wrong."
Standing on either side of him were two Evolvers with sharp gazes. They were twins, with a lot of similarities in their looks.
"I can see a few unfamiliar figures among them," Martin, the blonde one, remarked. "It seems they have received reinforcements."
Shaking his head, the Camp Leader grinned. "Not reinforcements. The owner of the house must be finally back."
The other Evolver, Joe, frowned tightly. "Is it the guy standing on that Tier Two crocodile? I haven’t seen him before."
"Possible..." The Camp Leader muttered. "No need to converse with them. Just shoot when they get into range."
Joe nodded, then immediately got off the wall to pass the order to the marksmen.
Leon remained calm as they slowly advanced towards the camp. Sensing the movement of the army and the guns being pointed toward them, he glanced at Selene.
She caught his gaze, then nodded. With a single thought from her, a transparent mirror appeared before the Eternal Night Army, acting as a see-through shield.
Leon stopped, and everyone behind him also stopped. He raised his head and gazed at the man sitting arrogantly atop the walls.
Feeling provoked by his stare, the man snorted. "Fire."
Instantly, the gunmen fired.
BANG!
The gunshots resounded loudly as hundreds of bullets were shot at the transparent shield.
Selene’s gaze flashed with contempt.
The bullets struck the mirror without a sound, sank into it, then came out facing the opposite direction.
The Park Slope Evolvers barely had time to feel shocked before the rain of bullets fell back on them.
Screams of pain and anguish erupted from their midst as several weaker Evolvers were killed while the stronger ones merely sustained injuries.
None of the Eternal Night Army warriors were harmed. Instead, the enemies had only harmed themselves.
The Camp Leader’s expression darkened.
"Abandon ranged fire. Engage them in—"
