Chapter 586: Chapter 229: Getting Started

“What did you find?”

Wei’en thought for a moment. Before the battle just now, he had indeed said he would hold another meeting with them about the research project.

‘Only a little over two hours have passed…’

“Director, didn’t you tell us to try Christa’s method?” Teresa didn’t notice anything unusual in his tone and continued excitedly, “We succeeded!”

“Oh?”

“Christa, you tell the Director about the experimental results and findings.”

Teresa looked at Christa beside her and motioned, “You’re the one who produced the results. It’ll be more specific coming from you.”

“Senior…”

As everyone’s eyes turned to her, a flush crept onto Christa’s face. It wasn’t from shyness, but from excitement and elation.

Before joining Research Institute No. 66, she hadn’t been optimistic about the research project on fusing Undead Creatures with mechanical devices. She was only interested because of Wei’en, the young Wizard who had made a spectacular name for himself in the Caster City State.

But after truly understanding Wei’en’s plans for this project, the ultimate goal, and witnessing that Mechanical Life, Unit Zero, she realized just how lucky she was.

She could not only participate in such a great research project, broadening her horizons and expanding her knowledge, but also play a key role in a certain part of it…

At the same time, she was also well aware that the credit wasn’t hers alone.

Without the comprehensive plans and actionable proposals provided by Director Wei’en, along with the all-important runes and arrays, and without the institute and top-tier equipment that Vice-Director Teresa had poured her efforts into building, she never would have been able to realize her ideas, no matter how many she had.

‘Perhaps my role in all this… is just being a little more perceptive about the details?’

“Hurry up and speak! The Director is waiting to hear the results.”

“Christa, hurry and tell the Director the results of the experiment, along with the detailed data parameters.”

Escobar’s tone was tinged with envy. ‘If only I had been the one to complete it. The chance to be vice-director, the chance to be the director’s assistant… all gone.’

“Alright, I…”

“Wait, Christa,” Oshana cut in. Before anyone could ask, she looked at the phantom screen and explained, “Director, everyone, please wait a moment. I’ll go get the ‘experimental result’.”

“Right, right,” Teresa, who had been about to show her displeasure, slapped her forehead and chimed in. “Director, we have to show you the sample as well.”

Watching the Witches scramble to fetch the zombie that was still tied to the experiment table, Adolph subconsciously covered his eyes with a few of his tentacles. It was just too embarrassing.

‘Of course, if he had been the one to discover such a major research finding, he might not have handled it any better than they did…’

Escobar, standing to the side, gave Wei’en a dry laugh. “Sorry, Director. She… we were too excited, a bit too eager.”

“It’s fine.”

Wei’en shook his head slightly, quietly watching the group on the phantom screen.

If the fusion experiment was successfully completed as they said, it would be good news for him. Even if the fusion’s effect wasn’t perfect, as long as there was a breakthrough, it was still worth celebrating.

For him now, the success of the Undead-Mechanical fusion research project wasn’t just for Shawa, but more for the future.

As long as he had a way to freely enter and exit the Undead World, or could summon those Undead Creatures with the “Deadpool” status, and combine them with mechanical fusion modifications, his power would exceed everyone’s imagination.

To put it bluntly, as long as he had enough Undead Creatures and mechanical devices, he could create an army that could crush the True God Church, the Evil Sects, and even that Dusk Sect hiding in the shadows… it would be all the same!

Before long, Teresa returned with Christa and the others. A slender zombie, trussed up like a turkey, was propped up in the center of the phantom screen.

‘Hm?’

Wei’en’s eyes lit up as he sized up the zombie.

A preliminary observation of the modified zombie showed that its appearance was very much in line with his previous designs.

On the phantom screen, the zombie creature they had carried over was wearing a black tricorne hat, a symbol of a captain’s status. It had a skull emblem in the center, and its brim was severely worn and stained with a few drops of dark red blood.

It wore a tattered jacket, torn at the shoulder, revealing the connection point between an alloy mechanical arm and its torso. Simple stitching made the wound look quite gruesome.

Its canvas trousers were practically torn up to the waist, revealing two mechanical legs. Gears and exposed tubing wrapped around the Earth Heart Rune Array and the Soul Fusion Rune within.

One could tell that this creature had likely been a Pirate Captain in life. Only its chest, abdomen, and head remained of its original body; all four limbs had been replaced with mechanical ones, which clanked and whirred as it struggled.

“Director, please wait just a moment longer.”

As she spoke, Teresa untied the zombie, while also having her two legendary-class subordinates stand by, just in case something unexpected happened.

“Hhhh… hhh…”

After being released, the zombie didn’t lash out upon noticing the abnormality of its body. Instead, it stared with pale white eyes, slowly scanning its surroundings. Finally, it tilted its head stiffly to look at Wei’en on the phantom screen. Its broken, buck-toothed lips parted, forcing out a few hoarse sounds.

“W… Wizard…”

Hearing it speak, Teresa quickly motioned for the others nearby to take out quills and paper to record its behavior, wanting to see if the modified zombie would exhibit any abnormalities.

“Mother… fucker!!”

Wei’en: “…”

Teresa and the others froze for a moment. They stared blankly at the Oldes words they had just written on the parchment, then, after it dawned on them, hastily crossed them out.
