Chapter 155 - 124: Unexpected Gain, Carrot and Stick
Chapter 155: Chapter 124: Unexpected Gain, Carrot and Stick
"I will support the Wesley Clan in becoming the new Lord of the North. As long as you make your contributions, I can guarantee that after the Wesley Clan takes control of the Northern Territory, all seven of you will receive the title of Count and a corresponding Earl’s Domain."
Threats alone are not enough to make people willingly risk their lives for you.
The carrot and the stick is the proper way to motivate someone.
Just as he expected, the expressions on Ward and the other six men changed instantly. They looked at him, their faces full of surprise, and said in unison, "We will not betray your trust, milord!"
Roy nodded and said unhurriedly, "Now, I have some new tasks for you."
"First, I don’t want to see any turmoil in Ice Wind City."
"Second, I don’t want any clans in Green Province still loyal to the Ironblood Duke."
"Third, reorganize the Castle Guard and the City Guard, and await the Wesley Clan’s takeover."
"Fourth, announce my decision to give the Reilly Clan’s domain to Roy Wesley and to support the Wesley Clan in becoming the Lord of the North."
"Fifth, at noon one week from now, I want to see Baron Ice Wolf here."
Although the Ironblood Duke was dead and the members of the Reilly Clan in Iron Blood Castle and Ice Wind City had been wiped out, this didn’t mean it was over. Rather, it meant a mountain of trivial matters had just begun.
Roy didn’t intend to waste too much time on these matters; he decided to leave them all for Tony to handle.
As for why he wanted to see Tony at noon a week later, the reason was simple: before then, he had other things to take care of.
For example, meeting with the Flying Dragon Knight to conduct a negotiation.
"Yes, milord!"
Ward and the other six men replied at once, without any hesitation.
"That is all. You may leave and decide amongst yourselves who will be responsible for which task."
Roy said slowly.
Ward and his men bowed to him before turning and leaving the study.
Once he was alone in the study, Roy took off his mask and began to look through the documents before him.
Before receiving Ward and his men, he had already met with many people and arranged numerous matters.
For instance: cleaning the bodies and bloodstains from the castle, taking inventory of the castle’s current stock of living and military supplies, compiling lists of Clan Knights and army commanders, and determining how many members of the Reilly Clan remained in other locations.
With Matthew, who had served as the Ironblood Duke’s butler, these tasks were quickly assigned.
As a Duke Clan with vast holdings and a history longer than that of the Laine Kingdom itself, the Reilly Clan had an extraordinary number of members.
Besides those living in Iron Blood Castle and Ice Wind City, many clan members lived in the family’s other territories or as branch families in other provinces of the Laine Kingdom and even in other countries.
Furthermore, within the armies stationed in the Royal Capital and on the Morning Star Plain, there were many important members of the Reilly Clan, such as the Ironblood Duke’s uncle and younger brother.
Although many members of the Reilly Clan were still alive, now that Roy occupied Iron Blood Castle and Ice Wind City, they could at most cause some minor trouble, not any major problems.
Compared to them, the trouble from the other two Dukes and the Kalin Kingdom would be far greater.
Both the Eastern Territory and the Western Territory had one or more provinces bordering the Northern Territory.
Once the other two Dukes learned that the Ironblood Duke had been killed, they would certainly be tempted to take advantage of the chaos.
It wouldn’t just be them; the Eldest Prince and the Kalin Kingdom would not miss this golden opportunity either.
The Northern Territory was composed of five provinces in total.
Although the Ironblood Duke was the greatest noble in the Northern Territory, no single province belonged entirely to the Reilly Clan.
Even in Green Province, where Iron Blood Castle and Ice Wind City were located, there were many domains that did not belong to the Reilly Clan.
Yorkshire, for example.
’If it were possible, I would, of course, want all five provinces of the Northern Territory to become the private domain of the Wesley Clan.
But right now, that’s completely beyond my ability.
Controlling a territory is different from fighting. It isn’t something I can handle just by virtue of my personal strength.
When facing High Level combatants, an army of ordinary people is of little use.
But when it comes to controlling a territory, an army of ordinary people is an indispensable part of the equation.’
After looking through the documents, Roy rose and went to the window, taking a moment to admire the night sky.
Then, with a single thought, he entered Chaos Square.
「The next morning.」
News that the Ironblood Duke had been killed in a single blow by the Dark Night Knight—and that the Dark Night Knight intended to give the Reilly Clan’s domain to his student, Roy Wesley, and support the Wesley Clan in becoming the Lord of the North—spread through Ice Wind City with astonishing speed.
Once the news was confirmed to be true, hundreds of ravens took flight from Ice Wind City, carrying the tidings to every region of the Laine Kingdom.
