Chapter 1040 - 1040: Once a coincidence, twice…(1)
“Why was he a traitor?” Lin Fan asked back in a calm voice.
This time, Kennedy seemed like he was very conflicted judging by the look on his face.
It was different from the other times where he was only a bit hesitant. This time, it really seemed like there was something big that was keeping him from saying something.
But in the end, he said with a sigh, “It’s a bit of a long story and one that I’m involved with, so I hope that you won’t judge until you hear the entire story.”
Lin Fan couldn’t help raising one brow when he heard this, but seeing that Kennedy was looking right at him with the same conflicted look, he eventually gave a nod.
The story behind this traitor was that he did something that went against the code of ethics that the army that they belonged to had. Because of that and the dangers that his actions posed, they had no choice but to execute him.
Though the main reason was because he actually killed one of his allies during this.
What the traitor had wanted to do was create biological soldiers that would be superior to normal soldiers. Not only would they be able to take the place of normal soldiers which reduced casualties, they would also be stronger than normal soldiers.
On paper, this seemed like it was the perfect solution, but it wasn’t as if something like this was that easy to do.
Creating biological soldiers…
Well, there were base materials that were required.
So for the experiments into these biological soldiers, there were materials that were requested. It was just that these materials were the things that they couldn’t accept.
These materials were things that were considered immoral since it stepped on a taboo that was hard for people to accept.
In the end, that was what drove that traitor to kill one of his comrades in an attempt to collect these materials.
By the time that he was found, he had already butchered up that body and combined it with the body of several animals. It had reached a point where that body couldn’t even be considered human anymore.
So naturally he was taken away and regarded as a traitor.
Though he didn’t really betray his country per say…it was just that it was easier to label him as such for killing his comrade. It was better than explaining what the traitor had been up to.
As such, he had been executed and buried for his actions.
Or that was what Kennedy had heard.
As for Kennedy’s own connection to the traitor, it was that he had been classmates with that person. He wasn’t particularly close with him, but he could be considered an acquaintance of that person.
He had also worked with that person on several occasions after they graduated which made them comrades.
It would have been possible that he would have been selected as the one that the traitor murdered since he was there in that camp that night. He was one of the ones that had been sleeping nearby when the murder happened.
So it could be said that Kennedy had quite the connection to this matter.
“You didn’t help him, did you?” Lin Fan asked just in case.
A look of disgust immediately appeared on Kennedy’s face before he said, “How could you even suggest something like that? How could I ever support something like that?”
Lin Fan already knew that this was the case, but he had to ask just to be sure.
But there was no hiding the disgust that was on Kennedy’s face when he said this.
At the same time, including the look on Kennedy’s face when he explained the story and how he had acted while we were wandering through this facility. It was clear that he didn’t support what he saw here.
As such, it was clear that he wasn’t related to that traitor.
Only now the real question was…
“If he was executed, why would his name show up here? At the same time, if he was executed, why would he still be alive?”
Kennedy slowly shook his head with a conflicted look on his face.
In his mind, he was thinking, “Who should I ask for the answers to this question? I want to know the same thing.”
After all, he had no idea what was happening here.
From the information that he had access to, he was certain that the traitor had been executed. He had even made sure to look into this matter since it was something that he had been related to.
In a way, that was a way for Kennedy to get closure on this matter.
But as far as he knew, that person should be dead…
So why would his name show up in a place like this?
No, it wasn’t just the name alone that tipped him off. It was the research that was being conducted in this place, it was just like the research that he had seen before.
So he knew that it wasn’t just the name, but also the work that was the same.
There was no denying that this was related to the person that he thought was dead.
Seeing the look that was on Kennedy’s face, Lin Fan didn’t push this matter any further.
If he didn’t know, then he didn’t know. There was nothing to gain from trying to push him for answers.
Instead, it was better to put him to work on something else.
“Go through these papers and see if there’s anything that you can find.” That was the order that Lin Fan gave to Kennedy.
Kennedy looked at the pieces of paper that were scattered around this room and it didn’t seem like he was that eager to fulfil this order. After all, the reports that were here contained information on things that he didn’t morally agree with.
As such, it filled him with disgust to learn more about these things.
But since he had been given the order and he wanted to find out more about whether the traitor was still alive or not…
In the end, Kennedy gave a nod and started reading without saying a word.
It seemed that he resigned himself to this task.
Lin Fan also stuck around and read a few things, but it really hurt his eyes to look through this. Even if he had more knowledge than the rest of the elders from the Love Sect about these things, the things that were written in the reports were just too technical for him.
So it actually hurt his eyes to read these things.
Kennedy on the other hand didn’t seem to have a problem reading these reports. In fact, it seemed like he had a deep understanding of everything that was written on these reports.
This certainly wasn’t something that any normal person from the technologically advanced continent would be able to do. This seemed like it was much more advanced than just general knowledge.
Thinking about it, Lin Fan felt that it made sense.
Kennedy was someone that had been able to become the captain of his own ship, so he definitely wasn’t someone with ordinary qualifications.
It was just that during the time that he had been with them, he really hadn’t shown off any of his special capabilities. So Lin Fan had misunderstood him as someone who was just ordinary.
Only seeing Kennedy now, he knew that he certainly was anything but ordinary.
After watching him for a bit, Lin Fan went on to see if he could find anything from these pieces of paper as well. It was just that he really couldn’t find anything that he considered useful.
Rather, it was Kennedy that found the next lead.
“This family’s name has appeared several times now. Are they connected?”
Lin Fan immediately went over when he heard this and looked at the reports that Kennedy was reading.
It took a while since it has hard for him to read through all the different things that made him feel dizzy, but he eventually found what he was looking for. He was able to find the name of the family that Kennedy mentioned.
“The Wang Family?” Lin Fan couldn’t help slightly knitting his brows as he read this.
After all, Wang was a common surname and it wasn’t as if it would be that simple for him to connect this name to a family.
But after a while, Lin Fan finally connected it to one.
That was because this was a family that he had seen in a report before.
This was one of the families that had been caught in the purge since they were a family that had been cooperating with the Wu Empire. They had been taken care of by Mu Bao Bao and he recognized this name because he was the one that had found them in the first place.
Only why would this name suddenly show up here?
“It seems that they didn’t just bet on one horse, it seems that they spread out their bets.” Lin Fan suddenly said under his breath when he realized something.
“So were they investors in this place?” Lin Fan asked Kennedy after this revelation.
Kennedy gave a nod to confirm this, but he didn’t say anything as he continued reading through the pieces of paper that were in front of him.
After a moment of deep thought, Lin Fan couldn’t help thinking of something else.
“If it was something that happened once, then it would be a coincidence. But if it happens a second time…then it’s no coincidence.”
