Chapter 1412: Chapter 1412: Can’t I Fall in Love with You at First Sight?
"Joking?" Knox Simmons froze, his brows instantly knitting together. He looked at her like he was a little hurt, all aggrieved, and muttered, "Scarlett, I’m confessing to you this seriously, and you think I’m joking?"
"Do you know how much courage it takes for me to say all this?"
"This mix of nerves and excitement and thrill and unease—I haven’t felt anything like this in years."
"Look straight into my eyes, really look, look carefully. Take a good look and see whether I’m actually joking with you or not." As he spoke, he raised his hands to cup Scarlett Yates’s face, steadying her head so she couldn’t avoid him.
Scarlett Yates had nowhere to hide. Helpless, she met that pair of deep, shadowy Peach Blossom Eyes.
Not a trace of frivolousness, not a trace of flippancy, not a trace of playful teasing.
However you looked at it, there was no way he was joking with her.
Knox Simmons’s joking face did not look like this; she could tell the difference.
Honestly, Scarlett Yates already knew perfectly well that Knox Simmons wasn’t joking. She was just panicking, not knowing how to face him, so she’d grabbed onto "you’re joking" to defuse the awkwardness of the moment.
"Knox Simmons, how could you possibly really like me? We’ve barely even met a few times, and the actual time we’ve spent together doesn’t even add up to two days. How is that even possible?" She bit her lip, her lashes trembling lightly, her face a little flushed.
"Why is it impossible? I’m not allowed to fall for you at first sight?" Seeing her shy like that, Knox Simmons’s lips curled into a smile, revealing straight, white teeth.
Scarlett Yates felt even more mortified. She blinked and let out a light sigh. "Come on, I know exactly how much I’m worth. I’m really not some fairy‑like great beauty."
Knox Simmons blinked too, except every time he blinked, those Peach Blossom Eyes seemed to spark and shine—it was like if you weren’t careful, you’d get stunned by him. The hands cradling Scarlett Yates’s face moved slightly; he lifted two fingers to pinch her nose, so gentle, overflowing with affection. "In my eyes, Baby Scarlett is a fairy‑like great beauty. No one can compare to you."
"Knox Simmons..."
"Scarlett, don’t say anything." Knox Simmons used his other hand to softly cover her mouth. "I’m not forcing you to give me any answer right now. I’m not in a hurry. As long as you understand how I feel, that’s enough. Everything else, we can talk about later, okay?"
After they quietly held each other’s gaze for a moment, Scarlett Yates gave a small nod.
Knox Simmons’s lips lifted in a smile; he reached up to ruffle her hair. "Right now, the most important thing is to find you somewhere decent to stay, then get you a proper meal, and then a good night’s sleep. Whatever’s bothering you can wait until tomorrow."
"Knox Simmons, just drop me off outside any hotel. Oh, and don’t pick anything too pricey. One of those budget hotels is fine."
"A budget hotel?" Knox Simmons’s brows furrowed immediately, his expression full of disgust. "Scarlett, what kind of nonsense is that? How could I let the woman I like stay in that kind of place? If people heard about it, they’d laugh me to death."
"Budget hotels are great. They’re cheap and convenient..."
Besides, it’s not like she was going to be staying in a hotel long term.
She was thinking of squeezing in with Stella for a while first; once her job settled down, she’d rent a place nearby.
"You don’t need to worry about anything. I’ll sort everything out. If I can’t even handle something this basic, what right do I have to say I like you?"
