Wilderness Survival with Druid System
Chapter 1116: Blizzard
After arranging everything with Wuwu, Chen Wen began to return to the camp.
On the way back, Chen Wen saw the Golden Eagle and others also emerge from the bushes, each carrying some dry grass in their mouths or claws.
The animals and Chen Wen arrived back at the camp almost simultaneously.
Upon seeing Chen Wen, the Golden Eagle immediately dropped the hay it was holding and said to Chen Wen, “We’ve found all the stuff you asked for. What’s it for?”
Chen Wen took the dry grass collected by the animals into his hands.
This dry grass was collected by the Golden Eagle and the others from the provisions of the pikas.
Chen Wen gathered the grass and laid it out by the campfire to dry.
Combined with the moss and pine needles he had already laid out earlier in the morning, he had gathered quite a bit.
The Golden Eagle was very curious about what Chen Wen was doing.
Not far away, Adam and the others were also curious, pondering what Chen Wen was up to.
Chen Wen patted these items, seemingly to remove the dust, then took out leather and fabric.
He spread the fabric out on his lap and placed all the hay and moss on top of it.
Then, under everyone’s watchful eyes, Chen Wen wrapped everything in the fabric.
At this point, Adam understood: “A pillow?”
“Yes!”
Chen Wen picked up the pillow, which was taking shape, and gave it a satisfied pat. “I’ve been feeling uncomfortable sleeping these past few nights. I need a pillow!”
As he spoke, Chen Wen wrapped the pillow in soft, tanned Siberian Roe Deer leather.
He secured it simply, and the pillow was complete.
He pressed the pillow, feeling its softness.
One must admit that after being filled with hay, pine needles, and moss, the pillow’s softness was comparable to the ones Chen Wen usually used.
The soft roe deer leather on the outside and the fabric underneath made the pillow even softer and more comfortable to rest on.
Overall, Chen Wen was quite satisfied with the pillow.
The others had nothing to say; there wasn’t anything urgent at the moment. If Chen Wen wanted to fuss over making a pillow, they would let him.
Everyone turned their attention back to the campfire and started chatting.
…
The next day, the temperature plummeted, and snow fell heavily.
Sensing the weather change, everyone took measures to respond.
Hua Yun, using the leftover wood from the initial shelter construction and materials like pine needles, teamed up with Roland to build a shed around the campfire. This protected the fire and allowed people to move around it.
Gaston and Adam took the time to process the game and hang it from the trees around the camp for ventilation and freezing storage.
Fred went into the surrounding woods and cut down a lot of trees to store as firewood.
Meanwhile, Chen Wen continued training Wuwu.
For three consecutive days, the camp was visited by heavy snow, and the temperature kept dropping, but for the prepared group, this level of cold and snow wasn’t a big deal at all.
On the fourth day, Gaston, who went fishing by the lake, brought news that Lake Baikal was completely frozen over.
The ice was thick enough to walk on.
This news didn’t cause much stir; everyone continued doing their own thing.
However, for Chen Wen, he started Wuwu’s second training project: ambushing and sneaking.
This training was not only guided by Chen Wen but also enthusiastically assisted by the lynx, who was well-versed in this skill, helping Wuwu quickly learn it.
In this cooperative survival setting, another two days passed. When Chen Wen planned to continue training with Wuwu, there was some discordant noise from the camp.
…
On the morning of the seventh day of the temperature drop,
When Chen Wen woke up, the fireplace in his shelter seemed on the brink of going out.
Though Chen Wen wasn’t afraid of the cold, he still hurried to add firewood to the fireplace to keep the shelter warm.
Nonetheless, even after adding firewood, Chen Wen still felt a bit cold.
“Is it colder today?”
Chen Wen couldn’t help but say.
He stepped out of the shelter to feel the outdoors. As expected, the temperature had dropped again.
It was now estimated to be over thirty degrees below zero, possibly even close to forty degrees below zero.
Such temperatures were relatively common in northern Lake Baikal during November.
Chen Wen didn’t dwell on it but instead checked on everyone else. They were all awake and had noticed the temperature drop, working to raise their shelter’s internal temperature.
Seeing that everyone was okay, Chen Wen went to the campfire, intending to make breakfast.
Compared to the thin layer of snow from the previous days, the camp now had several dozen centimeters of snow, thanks to the seven days of intermittent snowfall.
Chen Wen stepped on the snow, making a crunching noise.
His sounds caught the attention of the two wolf mink moving outside.
King Kong and Calabash noticed Chen Wen approaching and immediately came over.
Their bodies, although not visibly slimmer than before, had regained quite a bit of energy.
King Kong playfully grabbed Chen Wen’s pant leg with its forelimb, asking, “Do you have any plans for today, or are we just resting in the camp?”
Just as Chen Wen was about to reply, the Snowy Owl, Eagle, and Golden Eagle quickly flew over from a distance.
The Golden Eagle swiftly said, “Chen Wen, the weather is changing!”
Weather?
Chen Wen paused a moment, and the Eagle added in time, “It’s just like before, when we were in our homeland. The weather feels different, and the air feels uncomfortable, especially up high!”
Upon hearing this, Chen Wen frowned slightly.
He recalled indeed what the Eagle mentioned about the time in the wilderness by the Great Slave Lake when a blizzard hit.
Lake Baikal is also prone to blizzards.
However, since not many people pay attention here and the affected number is small, it’s not very well known.
Chen Wen thought for a moment and said, “Today’s weather could indeed bring a blizzard, but it won’t be large in scale. It got colder this morning, and if it warms up by noon or afternoon, we should be cautious.”
Saying this, Chen Wen instructed the animals to temporarily stop any outdoor activities today.
Especially the three birds of prey.
Their resilience in a blizzard is low, and they can only ride it out safely by staying in places unaffected.
The two wolf mink, known for their greed and fear of death, didn’t wait for Chen Wen’s instructions and immediately expressed their intent to rest in Chen Wen’s shelter all day, seemingly having forgotten their recent eagerness to venture out.
Chen Wen laughed helplessly at this. At that moment, Hua Yun finished tidying up and came out.
Seeing Chen Wen, Hua Yun asked, “No plans for today, right?”
Chen Wen nodded, “Just taking it easy, but I did notice the animals acting a bit strangely earlier. I suspect something might be off.”
This got Hua Yun thinking, “Something off?”
“Yes.”
Chen Wen paused briefly and said, “They seem odd and a little scared. This situation occurred before, during our lonely survival in the wilderness, just before a blizzard struck.”
The mention of a blizzard was enough to make Hua Yun wary.
She considered for a moment and said, “Regardless of whether there’s really a blizzard, we should prepare. Once everyone is out, we need to discuss this so they are at least mentally prepared.”
Chen Wen nodded, agreeing with this.
Soon enough, everyone gathered, and Chen Wen shared the news of the impending blizzard.
