Wilderness Survival with Druid System
Chapter 1113: Wolf Mink's Advice
Chapter 1113: Chapter 132: Wolf Mink’s Advice
People often say that persistence leads to success.
But for Wuwu, it persisted many times, yet never succeeded.
After the fourth hunting failure, Wuwu became discouraged.
It lay on the ground, looking dejected, which made the Golden Eagle somewhat dispirited as well.
“It’s not working, I can’t figure out the reason, let’s go back and let Chen Wen take a look.”
The Golden Eagle consoled Wuwu, saying, “But we still have food, the Snowy Owls should have caught quite a bit, let’s go check it out!”
Hearing this, Wuwu perked up a bit.
When they found the Snowy Owls, three pika rabbits had already been stored up.
Seeing the slightly dispirited look of the Golden Eagle and Wuwu, the Snowy Owl quickly guessed that their hunting trip wasn’t very smooth.
Thus, the Snowy Owl said, “King Kong, give them some food.”
Upon hearing this, King Kong, though reluctant, readily handed over the three pika rabbits: “Here! Eat up! We can catch more later!”
Feeling King Kong’s enthusiasm, Wuwu couldn’t help but express gratitude.
It bit into a pika rabbit and began to eat slowly.
But this eating manner made King Kong a bit curious.
King Kong asked Wuwu, “Why are you eating so slowly?”
Wuwu replied while gnawing on the pika rabbit’s bones, “That’s how I ate over at Mira’s, why?”
“Hmm, that’s a problem then.”
King Kong, knowing a bit about Wuwu’s background, spoke from experience: “Before, you were eating in a very safe environment, so eating slowly wasn’t an issue, but now, you’re in the dangerous wild. Eating slowly can lead to trouble!”
“Think about it, if you’re famished for several days and suddenly find prey, you give it your all to kill it, then start eating, but before you’ve taken a few bites, suddenly a creature as strong as you appears, what do you do then?”
Listening to King Kong’s words, Wuwu thought for a moment and said, “Fight it!”
“Wrong!”
King Kong immediately interrupted: “You’ve been hungry for days; you don’t have the strength to fight it!”
This left Wuwu bewildered, “Then what should I do?”
Hearing this, King Kong replied smugly: “After you kill the prey, you must eat it quickly, devouring as much as possible before it arrives. This way, even if you can’t win the fight and get chased away, at least you have some sustenance in your stomach!”
“I encountered just such a situation once. In the icy cold, I found the remains of a deer, and I was the first to arrive and started devouring it quickly. Just a few minutes later, a Wolf Mink stronger than me arrived, but by then, I’d already eaten the best meat! No matter how powerful that Wolf Mink was, it ended up with far less to eat than I did!”
Listening to King Kong’s words, admiration gleamed in Hulu’s eyes, “You’re so clever!”
King Kong smiled with satisfaction, “Of course!”
At this moment, Wuwu was thoughtful.
It quickened its pace and finished eating the pika rabbit, then stood up as if intending to end lunch.
Seeing Wuwu’s actions, King Kong asked again, “Why are you stopping?”
Wuwu thought for a moment and said, “I’m almost full, and it seems like you haven’t had enough, so I’ll leave this one for you.”
Hearing this, King Kong felt a bit moved.
Any animal willing to share food isn’t a bad one!
This was King Kong’s conclusion from experience.
Therefore, King Kong acknowledged Wuwu and said, “Well, seeing as you’re so good, I’ll teach you another lesson. Every time you eat, you should eat as much as possible! Eat until you’re full, until you’re stuffed, until you can’t walk!”
Wuwu was a bit surprised but recalled King Kong’s earlier advice and listened attentively: “Why is that? Tell me, King Kong!”
King Kong nodded, satisfied, and said, “Because out here in the wild, you never know when you’ll find food or how much you’ll get at once. So, when you do have food, eat plenty, only then you won’t go hungry! You’ll also have more time to look for other food!”
These words resonated deeply with Wuwu.
It recounted a past experience.
At the time, it had killed a wild boar but didn’t change its eating habits, so it only ate a meal’s worth.
After going for a walk and coming back hungry to continue eating,
it found that most of the boar had been eaten by some unknown animal, leaving little food behind.
It was because of this that Wuwu was starved and eventually resorted to stealing Chen Wen’s food.
After hearing this, King Kong commented, “See! What did I tell you!”
Hulu immediately chimed in, “You’re amazing!”
High above, watching the lively trio, the Golden Eagle and Snowy Owl shook their heads helplessly.
…
In the evening.
Chen Wen, on the lookout, waited for the animals to return.
Hearing from the Golden Eagle about the afternoon’s events, Chen had some insight as he approached Wuwu.
After circling Wuwu carefully, Chen Wen realized the issue: “The reason you were spotted is likely related to scent. The Golden Eagle’s sense of smell… it definitely can’t detect anything, but your prey can easily catch the scent you emit as you approach.”
Hearing this, Wuwu suddenly understood.
Chen Wen continued, “Additionally, you should target medium to large-sized prey; these small prey aren’t worth the energy expenditure to hunt. To survive in the wild, you must learn to gauge your energy use. I’ll teach you this later; starting tomorrow, we’ll first learn to mask your scent, then learn stealth and ambush. We should cover the basics within a week, and the rest we’ll tackle in the second week.”
Wuwu nodded and returned to its nest.
As Chen Wen went back to the main camp, he noticed that snowflakes started falling from the sky again.
This weather seemed to be heading into the depths of winter!
After eating, Chen Wen went straight to his shelter to rest.
…
The next day, Chen Wen was up early, getting busy.
Not necessarily for survival, but for the next stage of survival—enjoyment in busyness.
He found a nice piece of leather and some fabric, along with some dry moss and soft pine needles.
After gathering these, Chen Wen spread the moss out at a certain distance from the campfire, using the fire’s warmth to dry them out further.
After finishing this task, Chen Wen pondered on how to train Wuwu in scent masking.
He looked at the weather; the snow was still falling, and the ground was covered with a considerable layer of snow, accompanied by gusts of wind.
With this weather, learning to recognize wind direction was a good start.
Chen Wen made his decision.
He went to find the Golden Eagle, asking it to help gather some things; the Golden Eagle then sought out King Kong and Hulu.
After a quick discussion, the three animals, bringing along the Snowy Owl, swiftly disappeared from the camp.
Chen Wen watched the busy animals, shaking his head.
With this weather, they were the only ones unhindered to head out!
At this time, Adam and Gaston also got up, busy processing the prey, and Chen Wen added, “Let’s deal with the moose today, we’ll have roast moose for lunch.”
Gaston, who was handling a Siberian Roe Deer, heard this and promptly called Adam, and together they carried the moose to the lakeside.
Hua Yun came out, having returned to her working state.
Chen Wen said, “Then you tidy up the camp and prepare the ingredients for lunch.”
After allocating the tasks, Chen Wen went to train Wuwu.
