Wilderness Survival with Druid System
Chapter 1088 - 107: The Strange Herd of Elk
The next morning.
When Hua Yun woke up, she saw a completely different scenery from the day before.
The surrounding vegetation seemed as if a painter had added a few strokes of white paint; though not yet a snow-covered world, it did have a hint of winter chill.
"The snow last night was quite something."
Hua Yun sat up and looked towards Chen Wen beside her.
Chen Wen was trying to pet the lynx; upon hearing this, he temporarily stopped trying to bond with the lynx and said, "More or less, it started snowing heavily after you began resting and only stopped this morning."
Hearing this, a hint of worry appeared in Hua Yun’s eyes.
She couldn’t help but ask, "In this situation... is it the kind of snow that seals the mountains? If it is, should we head back?"
Chen Wen nodded slightly upon hearing her question.
If it was indeed the kind of snow that seals the mountains, it would be inappropriate for them to continue their activities outside.
So, whether they should head back or not was a decision they had to make next.
Chen Wen looked at the now stopped snowflakes and said, "Alright, let’s observe for another day. You and the Golden Eagle can look for prey nearby. After the snow, many herbivores will take this time to eat a lot, so finding prey will be much easier. You hunt, and I will try to tame the lynx at the camp."
If it doesn’t snow by tonight, we will hunt for another day. If it snows today, we’ll head back home."
Upon hearing this, Hua Yun was taken aback.
Tame the lynx?
Is it really possible to tame such a fierce creature?
After a moment of hesitation, she said, "In that case, I’ll take the Golden Eagle out to have a look. Be careful."
Glancing at the lynx tied in a corner of the camp, Hua Yun shook her head.
She felt that it would be very difficult to tame this fierce creature.
But then again, Chen Wen had always been unpredictable; maybe he could actually tame it.
Shaking her head, Hua Yun took up her weapon, called the Golden Eagle, and left the camp.
...
After Hua Yun left.
Chen Wen tidied up the temporary camp a little, then looked towards the lynx.
After spending a night together, the lynx was still somewhat wary of him, but overall it was much more Friendly than before.
Chen Wen walked over to the lynx.
The lynx lifted its head, its mouth agape, looking like it was about to hiss.
There’s no denying, cat species are authoritative when it comes to hissing.
Hissing is the standard Skill used by most cat species to intimidate other creatures.
Before the lynx could hiss, Chen Wen took out a piece of meat.
The lynx’s eyes immediately became alert.
It looked eagerly at the piece of meat, with much less ferocity in its eyes.
Chen Wen controlled the lynx’s food intake, feeding it just enough to keep it from going hungry, but not enough to be full, and then began transporting the game he had caught yesterday back to the temporary camp.
To reduce the burden on the way back, Chen Wen planned to do some simple preparation work, cutting the meat off the bones.
At the same time, while cutting the meat, Chen Wen also tried to get closer to the lynx.
Taking advantage of intervals while slicing the meat, he raised his hand and attempted to touch the lynx’s body.
But as soon as he was about to enter the lynx’s vigilance range, Chen Wen would immediately retract his hand and leisurely continue to slice the meat.
After doing this several dozen times back and forth,
the lynx began to think this motion was just a habitual action of Chen Wen’s, not an attempt to touch it.
Seeing that the lynx’s reaction to his outstretched hand wasn’t too intense,
taking a chance while the lynx was half-laying on the ground resting, he once again raised his hand; this time, the lynx didn’t even look, thinking Chen Wen would still retract his hand like before.
But this time was different!
Chen Wen didn’t retract his hand, instead reaching directly for the lynx’s neck and back.
The lynx, having its social distance breached, wanted to hiss, to intimidate Chen Wen.
But a strange sensation transmitted from its back skin, causing the lynx’s body to twitch and leaving it with a face that was almost, but not quite, hissing.
The system encountered a temporary bug and froze.
Yet soon the lynx recovered; it seemed to sense Chen Wen’s Friendliness and the comfort of the stroking, along with its lack of rest from last night to now.
The lynx quickly showed a contented expression, lying down and slowly falling asleep.
"This guy, finally let its guard down."
Chen Wen remarked with emotion.
If you can get a wild animal to sleep in an unfamiliar environment among unfamiliar creatures, it means the animal believes the area is relatively safe.
Observing the situation of the lynx, Chen Wen planned to activate its Communication ability after waking up, formally trying to tame it.
Thinking over the taming plan, Chen Wen continued to focus on slicing meat.
...
In the forest, Hua Yun and the Golden Eagle were also on the hunt for prey.
After the snowfall, many herbivores expand their activity times and ranges, spending more time searching for food and extending their search range.
Theoretically, it should be easier to find prey now.
But in reality, the heavy snow also increases the difficulty of hunting.
Human activity in the snow is quite inconvenient, and in low temperatures, many herbivores will limit their time exposed to the snow and wind.
Therefore, Hua Yun let the Golden Eagle first scout the surrounding area.
After flying for a bit, the Golden Eagle perched on a branch near Hua Yun.
It issued a series of calls, signaling Hua Yun to follow it.
Hua Yun nodded slightly, following the Golden Eagle.
This time, the Golden Eagle led Hua Yun a bit northward, not too far, around two kilometers.
Through gaps in the trees, Hua Yun could vaguely make out some shadows moving in the distance.
She crouched behind a relatively thick spruce tree, watching the situation ahead carefully.
Soon, Hua Yun recognized the approaching prey — moose.
Moose, in the forests around Lake Baikal, are considered a relatively rare prey.
After all, their numbers are quite few, so finding moose in such a vast area is extremely challenging.
Therefore, Hua Yun felt her luck wasn’t too bad this time.
She picked up her bow and arrow, just looking to find a hunting target.
Suddenly, Hua Yun noticed an oddity about this group of moose.
They didn’t seem to be migrating or foraging; instead, like they were being chased by something.
All along the way, they ignored the abundant food around them, moving quickly, hardly stopping at all.
This scene surprised Hua Yun a bit.
She envisioned a few scenarios, then decided: to observe first!
See what situation this group of moose is in before deciding whether to act!
With a decision made, Hua Yun immediately hugged the trunk of the spruce, starting to climb up, finally settling on a branch some ten meters above the ground, watching the moose approach.
Once the moose passed by, Hua Yun looked towards the path they had come from.
She was curious to see what might be hunting the moose!
