Chapter 47: Chapter 47: She Doesn’t Want the Scummy Ex-husband 7
The crowd bowed their heads in salute, but couldn’t resist sneaking glances at the flying palanquin.
Although the Phoenix Clan could fly on their own, they often rode in flying palanquins to display their status.
For Xu Yang’s family banquet today, the Phoenix King and Queen Phoenix shared one flying palanquin, while Ji Xiaosong and Feng Cangwu held hands and rode together in another.
All eyes were fixed on the one behind them. Everyone knew it was the Eldest Princess’s palanquin.
As the flying palanquin slowly descended, the crowd’s gazes grew more fervent and curious.
When Feng Cangwu stepped out of the palanquin, a long, powerful hand appeared first. He then emerged, his posture tall and straight. A suit of fine robes accentuated his magnificent bearing, and his features were exceptionally handsome. His eyes held an innate nobility and authority, yet he also possessed a gentle, scholarly grace.
A wave of soft gasps and whispers immediately rippled through the crowd.
"So this is the Eldest Princess’s husband. He’s truly a man of remarkable presence."
"Look at that aura. He’s truly worthy of the Eldest Princess."
"I originally thought the Eldest Princess didn’t choose Elder Xu because she was angry. But looking at this man now, it’s obvious Elder Xu was never even in her league."
"You all should talk less. This is Elder Xu’s family banquet. We were invited to see him show off his new heir. Don’t be gossips."
Feng Cangwu heard every word of the crowd’s discussion. Without a change in expression, he helped Ji Xiaosong out of the flying palanquin.
"My dear, be careful. Did the baby give you any trouble on the way here?"
An uproar swept through the crowd.
Everyone was stunned.
’The Eldest Princess is pregnant too?’
The Phoenix Clan already had very few offspring. For both Royal Family princesses to become pregnant only a month after their Contracts... those who had tried for over a thousand years without a single child would be sick with envy.
At that moment, Xu Yang was staring daggers at Ji Xiaosong. If looks could kill, he would have bored a hole right through her.
’But then again,’ he thought, ’that woman can’t produce any good stock anyway. The Phoenix Clan isn’t a place where Red Phoenixes are common. He knew every single Red Phoenix still alive, and there weren’t many.’
’As for this husband of hers, I’ve never seen him before. He must be some nameless nobody.’
’Otherwise, with my status, I would have met him long ago.’
Having convinced himself of this, Xu Yang’s expression brightened considerably.
He stepped forward to greet the Phoenix King and Queen Phoenix, playing the part of the perfect host.
"A humble welcome to the Phoenix King, the Queen Phoenix, and the Eldest Princess."
Xu Yang bowed slightly, his face wreathed in smiles. He turned to the side and gestured them in. "Please, come in. The finest wine and food have already been prepared. We were just waiting for you to be seated."
The Phoenix King gave a slight nod. With Queen Phoenix, he followed Xu Yang’s lead into the residence, bringing Ji Xiaosong and Feng Cangwu with him.
From start to finish, Feng Cangwu kept one arm around Ji Xiaosong, making her look for all the world like a cherished, delicate wife.
As for Xu Yang not greeting him, that was unimportant.
’Someone like him isn’t worthy of my acquaintance anyway.’
Both Feng Cangwu and Xu Yang considered the other unworthy, but neither understood the other’s true situation or thoughts.
When the Phoenix King and Queen Phoenix took their seats, everyone else had to rise and bow.
"We pay our respects to the Phoenix King, the Queen Phoenix, and the Eldest Princess."
The Phoenix King raised a hand, signaling for everyone to rise. He then cleared his throat and said, "Everyone, today, in this fine place of Elder Xu’s, I would like to introduce someone to you all."
With that, he looked at Feng Cangwu. "This is my eldest son-in-law."
All eyes turned to Feng Cangwu. Seeing that the Phoenix King’s introduction was so simple, they were filled with curiosity but dared not ask more. They simply said in unison, "Greetings to the husband."
Feng Cangwu nodded slightly, a perfectly measured smile on his face.
The Phoenix King then addressed Xu Yang and Ji Huadan, who had just emerged. "Today, my brother’s daughter, Huadan, and Elder Xu are with child. This is a joyous occasion for our Phoenix Clan. The conception of a new life is crucial for the continuation of the Phoenix Clan’s bloodline and is truly an auspicious sign. May this child be blessed with extraordinary talent and contribute to the prosperity of our clan."
Ji Huadan raised her head, but she didn’t look at the Phoenix King. Instead, she stared at Ji Xiaosong, the smugness in her eyes unconcealed.
She subtly pushed out her still-flat stomach and said in a delicate voice, "Thank you for your auspicious words, Your Majesty. I, Huadan, will certainly take great care of this pregnancy and give birth to an outstanding heir for the Phoenix Clan."
Ji Xiaosong keenly felt the malicious gaze. She didn’t need to search for its source; she knew it had to be coming from Ji Huadan.
Ji Xiaosong sighed internally. ’I really don’t know what this woman has to be so smug about all day.’
’It’s just a pregnancy.’
’As if it’s something not just anyone can do.’
Perhaps completely ignoring Ji Huadan, this attitude of treating her as if she were invisible, was the heaviest blow of all to her.
Seeing that Ji Xiaosong remained perfectly composed and didn’t react to her provocation at all, Ji Huadan’s anger flared even hotter.
She bit her lip and raised her voice. "Cousin, aren’t you happy for me? Or are you just jealous?"
Ji Xiaosong let out a soft laugh and replied unhurriedly, "Why would I be jealous of you? Your little affair isn’t worth my attention."
The original owner of this body and Ji Huadan had never gotten along, even as children.
Whatever the original owner had, Ji Huadan would scheme to get the same for herself.
Even though she failed every time, she was like an unkillable cockroach, always scurrying over the moment she saw an opportunity.
Now, seeing Ji Huadan flaunting her supposed victory in front of her again, Ji Xiaosong only felt utter annoyance.
And Ji Xiaosong’s reaction, just like always, made Ji Huadan’s face instantly turn ugly.
"Cousin, you almost formed a Contract with my husband. Now, just to spite him, you’ve gone and found some wild pheasant to be your arm candy. We grew up together; I truly can’t bear to see you debase yourself like this."
The other guests wished a plate of melon seeds would magically appear on the table. If not for the noble status of those involved, they would probably be leaning in and whispering their opinions to each other already.
"Someone with a congenital defect like Xu Yang? I, the princess, would never have even looked his way. As for my husband’s talent, I have no need to prove it to you. Today is your big day. You shouldn’t get so worked up. What if you harm the child in your belly?"
"I know you’ve always been stubborn, cousin. Otherwise, how could you have suddenly entered a Contract when we’ve never heard a thing about you and your husband before? You know me, I’ve always been magnanimous. I just feel sorry for you, cousin, doing something so reckless just to spite my husband. I advise you to break up with this person of unknown origin by your side. Stop trying to make my husband angry; he doesn’t care."
Hearing this, Feng Cangwu was about to make a move but was stopped by Ji Xiaosong, who grabbed his hand.
She gave him a reassuring look, and Feng Cangwu gritted his teeth and took a step back.
’My little wife is too good-natured, letting someone like that provoke her.’
"Are you incapable of understanding what I’m saying? I have already formed a Contract with my husband. A breakup is impossible. I never had any interest in Xu Yang before, and I certainly won’t in the future. Anyone here with a normal sense of aesthetics can see that my husband is leagues better than Xu Yang."
"But... cousin, what if he’s all looks and no talent? Isn’t that... a waste of your own aptitude?"
