Ugghh… This was seriously tiring…
It was just one group of people after the other trying to chat up Mother or trying to get a marriage out of me.
Still, Mother showed her experience in dealing with them by expertly navigating all the talks that were brought to her.
Those that were trying to make use of our family were made use of in turn and those that were genuine in wanting a legitimate business relationship were given the opportunity to make their cases.
While it was definitely interesting to see Mother working like that, I also had to play the part of being an interested party by Mother’s side and trying to follow all those boring conversations mentally tired me out even though I wasn’t the focus of it.
If this was what my life is going to be like after taking over the family… Ugh… I don’t want to think about it.
Still, I have not forgotten our main goal here as I was also on the lookout for the supposed masterminds that were trying to destroy the Tree of Life.
The maids had already given me a drawing of how they looked and Katsuki would also be pointing them out to me when they appear, which so far, they have not done so yet.
They were either late or were still hidden amongst the crowd somewhere in the room.
That was normal since the King and Queen had yet to arrive and we were still ten minutes away from the supposed start of the event anyway.
I had to endure another merchant chatting up Mother and trying to propose his son as a marriage partner to me before the herald called out into the room.
“Presenting the King and Queen of our glorious Kingdom! Her Majesty, King Justinia and Her Majesty, Queen Levianne!”
Everyone turned to see the two Royals entering the ballroom, the Queen holding the King’s arm as they walked in side by side.
They were all dressed up and had the air of nobility around them, looking just like the King and Queen they were supposed to be.
Hard to imagine both of them were quite literally moaning in lust around my shaft just a few days ago…
Everyone bowed their heads while Mother took me by the arm to lead me towards them.
Both of them also made their way towards us and both of them shot me a knowing look as our eyes met.
I wasn’t sure if that was because they were hunting me about the plan to nab those merchants today… Or they were hinting that they want a repeat of what happened a few days ago.
If I had to guess, it’s probably both.
“Madam Nilm,” King Justinia greeted.
Mother nodded at her, “Your Majesty, thank you for the invitation as always.”
“Thank you for attending as well. I hope the party this year will also be to your liking.”
“Ufufufu~ I’m expecting interesting things this year, your Majesty,” Mother giggled not so subtly.
Obviously she was referring to the fact that I was going to out the masterminds behind the plot to destroy the Tree of Life.
Why does it feel like she was looking forward to it like it was going to be some kind of show?
Justinia was also looking at me when Mother said that and that made it clear that she was also looking forward to it.
What the heck? Isn’t this just going to be pulling out some criminals to face justice? Why are you guys acting like there was going to be some big drama happening?
The King then turned her attention towards the rest of the room and stepped towards them with her arms spread out.
“Thank you all for attending this event! This is to celebrate another year of economic prosperity for our Kingdom! All of you have worked hard in ensuring our economy is strong and our people are well fed and their needs and wants are met! Without you all, our nation might come to a stand still!”
A maid came forward and presented a glass of wine to the King and Queen each.
At the same time, the maids also moved in to make sure everyone had their own glass and one of them approached me to offer me one as well.
Ironically, I recognised the maid as one of ours who was assigned to work in the palace. She even bowed and greeted me with a ’Young Mistress’ before leaving.
Both the King and Queen took their glasses and the King raised her glass towards the crowd, “Cheers!”
Everyone lifted up their own glass including me and cheered the King as well.
We sipped on our drink and I suddenly thought that this might be the part where we find out the wine had been poisoned or something and people start collapsing onto the ground…
But then I remembered that we had our own maids and butlers stationed here so that possibility is pretty much non-existent.
After the toast, the mingling continued and the King was also approached by her own group of merchants and nobles looking to do business with the Royal Family as well, all of them buttering up to her with just as much compliments and praises as they did with Mother.
Now that the King was taking away most of the attention, I could finally begin with the plan.
“Katsuki…” I whispered.
“I am here, Mistress. Would you like me to point out the people we are targeting today?”
“If that is possible.”
Katsuki straightened herself and scooted a little closer to me, “The one that is directly speaking to the King right now… Count Moussui of the Elta Family. He is the main sponsor and ringleader of the group. He was the one who sought out supporters and created this group to get more Trasif slaves.”
I peeked in the direction that Katsuki had pointed out and found a sandy haired man chatting with the King with exaggerated hand movements.
Katsuki continued, “The next main supporter is Baron Tali of the Light Family. He is currently sulking by the pillar to your left at the corner of the room.”
Once again, I peeked in the direction Katsuki had pointed out and a black haired young man was there and leaning against the pillar with a glass of wine in his hand.
“The last person is Viscountess Liftis of the Furn Family. She is the blonde haired woman that is currently trying to seduce the men over to your right, Mistress.”
Wait what?
I turned to look and sure enough, there’s a blonde haired woman that was literally pushing herself against three men and unashamedly rubbing her hands on the crotches of two of them while pushing her chest against the last guy.
I was wondering what she was trying to do until one of them slipped a silver coin in between her boobs.
Really? That’s what that is about? In an event like this? Sheesh…
“Alright then… So I suppose I should just call them out and state their crimes?”
“If that is what Mistress wishes.”
Eh? Why does that sound a little weird?
I turned to Katsuki, “What do you mean by that?”
Katsuki moved even closer to me to make sure that no one could hear us, “Mistress… You are about to make an accusation… But do you have proof of what you are about to accuse them of?”
Oh… Err… About that…
“I thought that you might have the evidence or something… Didn’t you find out about them through those slavers to begin with? They must have some documents or something that links them back to these three people right?”
“Unfortunately not, Mistress… We got the information through the slavers themselves. But none of them are here today, Mistress.”
“Well crap… Does that mean that we can’t do anything to them after all?”
Katsuki gave me a rare smile, “It’s alright, Mistress. You can just go ahead and accuse them of the crime. I will back you up. You do not need to worry.”
Eh? Really? Even when I don’t have any proof to present?
I’m sure Katsuki won’t tell me to do something that would embarrass me so I trust her.
Alright then!
I cleared tapped on my wine glass, letting an audible ringing noise echo around the hall and getting everyone’s attention.
When I saw everyone turning to me, I sucked in a breath and pointed to each of the three people in turn.
“I am here to accuse Count Mossui, Baron Tali and Viscountess Liftis of conspiring to destroy the Tree of Life and working alongside illegal slavers to achieve such means.”
There were gasps of surprise as the others turned to look at the three people in question.
I was fully expecting them to sputter in outrage and demand evidence or something but…
The three of them immediately fell to their knees.
“Wait!! I can explain!! Please!!”
“It was all his idea! I swear!!”
“Please! I didn’t know it would happen like this!! Please believe me!!”
Eh? They really just took my word for it?
