Chapter 1294: Mother Is Working
I looked out of the carriage as we headed towards the palace for the event, the streets rolling past us with several passers-by looking in our direction.
Most of them weren’t looking at us just because it was us but more because there were multiple carriages currently on their way to the palace for the event.
Aside from us, there were various other expensive looking carriages that were glittering with gold and decorated lavishly on the road towards the palace. Not only that, even the horses and the coachmen were also well accessorised.
Compared to them, our carriage could be said to be dull looking with its completely black exterior and a simple looking maid as the coach driver.
Yet because we were the only ones with the full black carriage, it ironically made us stand out even more.
Though I guess the fact that our family crest was also emblazoned on the side of the carriage was also something that drew a lot of attention… At least to the people who recognised the crest.
That was evident in the people who were pointing at the crest in shock while others were just looking at the carriage as a whole.
To them, the Nilm Family was supposed to be a sort of enigma after all…
The palace soon came into view and there were a number of carriages queued up to allow their occupants to disembark.
While there was a relatively long queue of carriages waiting in line to drop off their passengers, our carriage, naturally, went past them without queueing up at the back.
I didn’t even need to ask Mother if this was alright for us while she hummed and patted my head, bouncing me lightly on top of her lap.
For today’s event, the only people who would be attending with me was Mother, Mary and Katsuki.
The girls wanted to follow along as well but unfortunately, I would be going as the ’Young Mistress of the Nilm Family’ instead of ’Aster’ so they wouldn’t be able to follow me without raising questions.
The carriage approached the palace and stopped right in front of the gates in front of the other carriages that were carrying the other nobles and merchants.
One of them who obviously wasn’t from around here got pissed at this and shouted at us.
“Hey?! What the heck?! Everyone is queuing up and you think you can just cut in front of us?! Who do you think you are?!”
For some reason, I sensed a slight change in the air like something was about to happen when Mother suddenly spoke up.
“Ignore him. My little one is here.”
That feeling suddenly disappeared, almost like it had been a fragment of my imagination.
Well… I wasn’t stupid… I’m pretty sure there were maids and butlers around that were preparing to cut that guy down for his words but Mother told them off.
Mary opened the door for us and Katuski followed after her, the two of them positioning themselves on either side of the entrance.
Mother was next to step out and she turned to offer her hand to me, allowing me to take it and disembark from the carriage.
I peeked at the side to see the person who had been shouting at us freezing in his steps when he saw us.
I guess he figured out who we were and he was currently trying to think of a way to escape death.
His conclusion was to press himself onto the ground in a dogeza, “Please accept my apologies!! I did not know it was the esteemed Nilm Family! I will–”
“Silence. It is unbecoming for someone who had been invited to this event to make a scene like this,” Mother berated him without even looking in his direction.
Without another word, she took my hand and led me into the palace, never looking in that guy’s direction a single time.
Waiting at the entrance was a group of butlers and maids who were there to guide the attendees to the event hall where the celebration would be held.
But after coming over to the palace so many times, I could have found my way to the place without needing a guide but I guess this was customary for an event like this.
When we reached the main hall, there was a herald at the entrance that called out into the room as we entered.
“Presenting the Matrairch of the Nilm Family and the heir of the Nilm Family!”
Several heads snapped towards our direction and I could feel the gazes from everyone as Mother led me into the hall.
I was wearing a rather conspicuous white ball gown that had a train floating behind me and waving in the air like a dragon’s tail while Mother was wearing a matching dress except it was black in colour.
Unlike the ones that I wore in the Trasif capital city, this dress was especially conservative where it pretty much hid every part of my skin from view but it was also quite tight fitting so my curves were pretty much on full display.
Somehow, it feels a little bit more lewd because of that…
Well… I personally think Mother looks great in her dress so I can’t complain.
We entered the hall under the gaze of the people who were already there, no one paying attention to the next group that was announced after us.
As soon as we reached the crowd, a middle aged man approached us holding two glasses of what looked like champagne in his hands.
“Madam Nilm. It is an honour for you to grace us with your presence,” He greeted, his voice practically dripping with flattery.
Mother smiled at him, “Good evening, Lord Gasus. It is nice to see that you are well.”
He offered one of the glasses to Mother, “And I wouldn’t be standing here if it wasn’t for your maids protecting me during that ambush. I owe you and the maids my life.”
Mother took the glass, “Ufufu~ I’m glad that they were of help to you, Lord Gasus.”
“To your health, Madam Nilm,” He toasted and knocked back the glass.
Mother took a sip of the drink before nodding at the lord.
He turned to me and did a curt bow, “And it’s good to see you as well, Lady Nilm. It is an honour to meet you.”
I took my hand back from Mother and curtsied, “It is nice to meet you as well, Lord Gasus.”
I honestly have no idea who this guy is, by the way… But from that conversation earlier, it was clear that he must have hired a few of the maids from our family and they have protected his life just recently.
That means he’s probably a customer of ours so I should just treat him as such.
He straightened himself and gestured at me, “Might you be looking for a suitor? I have a son who I can introduce to you.”
I managed to show him a polite smile, “I apologise, I am not looking for one at the moment but I thank you for your offer.”
He nodded, “That’s a shame. I seem to have taken too much of your time. Please enjoy the party.”
He then left and I didn’t even have time to relax when another person took his place, this time being a lady wearing a green dress that showed off quite a bit of cleavage.
She curtsied, “Good evening, Madam Nilm. It is an honour to meet you here.”
“Lady Charol, it is nice to meet you as well.”
“I am honoured you remember me. May I introduce you to a few of my friends? They would like to meet you.”
“Ufufufu~ Certainly~”
A few people came in from the side, two of them male and one of them female.
“This young gentleman is Mister Gaues, he’s in charge of a chain of textile stores that’s quite popular with the nobles. This gentleman is Lord Birch, he is the owner of a gold mine in the outskirts of the Capital City. And this is Lady Ultai, she has just recently come of age and is my niece.”
Mother greeted them all in turn and I knew Mother enough to know that she had absolutely no interest in any of them.
The lady went on to let each of them talk to Mother and it was clear that the two men was hoping that they could get Mother to invest in their stores and the woman was hoping that she could somehow marry into our family either through me or even as Mother’s lover which was more impossible than asking Katsuki to stop being my maid.
Once Mother was done conversing with them, another group of people came up and this time it was a group of merchants. Before they even started speaking, I already knew that they were after Mother’s money as well.
Well… Now I can see why Mother doesn’t bring me to these kinds of events…
