Chapter 441 - 246: I Want the Red Dragon Reverse Scale
Baron sighed. He was truly speechless. He never imagined that the Dragon Spear—which had been dormant ever since he’d bound it to himself with his blood in Dragon Spear Plaza—would suddenly react to the emcee’s chanting.
Then, his consciousness was pulled under a starry sky filled with countless eyes. They belonged to men and women, young and old, and reflected joy, anger, sorrow, and delight. The largest eye spanned nearly the entire sky. It was a brilliant gold, tearing a great, blazing rift through the cosmos like a falling meteor.
The colossal eye stared down at Baron. Its gaze alone made him feel a crushing pressure, as if the very sky were collapsing. One could only imagine how powerful its owner had been in life. At the same time, it served as a testament to the sheer strength of the Beowulf Family’s ancestor—how else could such a being have been forged into the Dragon Spear?
Then, a deep and ancient voice emanated from the colossal eye once more, as resonant and rousing as a temple bell:
"Dragoon, the Red Dragon Scale will grant you strength. Before twilight arrives, you must collect the [Dragon Law]."
’Hold on. First of all, my name isn’t Dragoon. And second, wasn’t the mission you gave me before to revive the Emperor? Now I have to collect the [Dragon Law] too?’
’Are you kidding me? This Big-Eyed Monster and that perverted corpse-dumper from the dreamscape are both treating me like free labor. Besides, the Dream Master has a much better deal going on. At least he has the Shepherdess to teach me some skills and save my hide in a crisis...’
’But you, Big-Eyed Monster, we’ve only met twice. You think you can make me work for free just because I’m holding on to this Dragon Spear for you? Dream on.’
’I’ll have you know, I’m not the same beast of burden I was in my past life. You’re not even going to bribe me with empty promises, yet you think you can just strong-arm me into submission? Fat chance.’
"Constantine. I’m Constantine... The Dragon Clan was wiped out a hundred years ago."
Baron didn’t dare say any of that out loud, of course. He chose his words with care, trying to find a tactful yet dignified way to tell the Big-Eyed Monster he had no time for any emperor or Dragon Law. Frankly, while the Dragon Spear was certainly useful, he preferred his versatile Spear Sword to such an uncontrollable risk.
"Why choose me? For a task this important, shouldn’t you find someone dependable, someone truly trustworthy? I think the eldest daughter of the Beowulf Family is a great candidate. She’s a young Dragon Slayer, beautiful, and of the Old Blood... I’m just a fugitive right now. Big-Eye... Lord Golden Eye, surely you can see that."
"And what do you mean by this so-called ’twilight’? What’s the deal with the [Dragon Law]? Weren’t they taken away by the Three Great Dragon Kings or something?
Besides, I remember the mission you gave me before was to [Revive the Emperor], wasn’t it? I don’t care who the Emperor is for now, but you at least have to tell me where the body is, right?"
"You bear the aura of the Dream Master, Dragoon." The Golden Eye’s voice was like the grating of countless blades. "This means you are not controlled by [Destiny]."
’I already told you my name isn’t Dragoon... Does this Big-Eyed Monster not understand human speech? Hmm, then again, it’s supposed to be a Dragon, so that would make sense.’
’And in life, it must have been a Pure-blood Ancient Dragon or something even greater. Otherwise, there’s no way it could spot the Dream Master’s aura on me at a glance. After all, the Dream Master is one of the Seven Great Old Gods. Something less than a ’Gold’ shouldn’t be able to perceive it.’
’As for not being controlled by Destiny... According to what I heard when I made the pact with Carmen, wasn’t it because the Red Dragon is a dragon abandoned by Destiny? As its Dragon Knight, I naturally share that trait, right?’
’But the way this Big-Eyed Monster puts it, it sounds like the Dream Master—that corpse-dumping freak—chose me first, and *that’s* why I’m not controlled by Destiny.’
[Destiny]. A thought stirred in Baron’s mind. According to the [Golden Law Table] compiled by the Inner Side’s current Alchemy Realm, a Law of this kind had never existed in the world.
And yet, hearing so many people talk about Destiny, along with the [Lucky Goddess Necklace] at his waist, strongly implied that a [Destiny Law] must indeed exist.
’What was going on? Could it be that the [Golden Law] itself held some other secret?’
But Baron shook his head, pushing such pointless thoughts aside, as the Big-Eyed Monster continued to speak:
"I cannot tell you about the twilight and the Law. It involves gods and Destiny. Telling you would only lead you to the same fate as them."
"Them?" Baron froze for a moment. Then, his gaze followed the Golden Eye’s as it swept over the eyes of all sizes in the starry void—eyes belonging to men and women, young and old, filled with joy, anger, sorrow, and delight.
As Baron watched, the eyes began to blink, like zoo animals watching a human from behind a glass wall. Some were dazed, some curious, some held a vicious glint, and others shone with intelligence... But without exception, Baron saw a deeper desire within them all.
It was a desire born of longing, of envy, of craving... of wanting to take his place!
Baron shivered. A thought instinctively surfaced: ’I-i-is it too late for me to back out of this whole "revive the Emperor, collect the Law" thing?’
The Big-Eyed Monster said, "There is no need to be afraid. Though some among them are watched by the gods, most are just pitiful souls who chose to exist in this starry sky to escape [Death]."
"Escape Death?"
"The [Death Law] is a Law that can even slay gods. It is the antithesis of life, yet it also represents Judgement over all living things... [Death] is the weapon [Destiny] uses to pass Judgement on all who disobey. Since the Stone Monument Era, countless deities have fallen beneath Destiny’s Judgement."
