Chapter 436 - 243: How to Steal the Angel (2)
Having been invited to a Dragon Hunting Ceremony in the Dracul Mountain Range before, Elvin naturally recognized the woman.
The eldest daughter of the Beowulf Clan, Isabella Beowulf.
’She’s bidding too!?’
The Beowulf Clan was indeed one of the Four Great Demon-Hunting Clans of the Inner Side. However, as the Inner Side’s renowned Dragon Slayer Clan and leaders of the Silver Faction, they already possessed their own exclusive family Magic Potions and Secret Techniques. They had no real reason to get involved with the "Angel."
And to enter the fray when the Holy Cross Association and the Holy Mechanism had already made their intentions clear... Was this a whim, or was she confident in her victory?
Elvin glanced at Jiang Ge. Apparently, Jiang Ge also hadn’t expected the eldest daughter of the Beowulf Clan to place a bid. His expression was a mixture of surprise and gravity.
The guests in the hall were equally caught off guard. They exchanged dumbfounded, questioning looks.
Clearly, they didn’t understand why the Dragon Slayer Clan of Beowulf would suddenly want a girl with "Perfect Defilement." To create a new Magic Potion for Promotion and adjust their Alchemy Circuits?
It wasn’t just the people in the hall who were baffled; the members of the Beowulf Clan were just as confused.
One of the clansmen said in a hoarse voice, "Miss Eldest... you... you must have misspoken."
Isabella raised her paddle again and repeated, "Seventy-five million. I want to buy this girl."
Baron paused, a complicated look on his face as he sent a message via Spiritual Power. "Why?"
"Don’t get the wrong idea. This isn’t for you," Isabella replied coolly via Spiritual Power. "This girl is an ’Angel.’ Perhaps the Beowulf Clan can use her to cultivate an entire army of Angels to counter the Dragon of the Sky."
’Very pragmatic. I was half-expecting some cliché movie line like, "I have suitors lined up all the way to France, yet here I am spending a few hundred million to play house with you."’
Baron complained internally.
But he wasn’t an idiot. A woman’s heart might be as hard to fathom as a needle in the ocean, but Baron could still tell his presence had influenced her decision to bid, at least to some degree. Perhaps it was their childhood bond, or something like it. After all, their friendship had been forged robbing people together in the Dracul Mountain Range.
Freya’s beautiful eyes flickered with surprise and suspicion as she looked at Miss Eldest, while Barbara chuckled sweetly. "Miss Isabella is quite the big spender."
"I wouldn’t dare compare myself to Walter of the Golden Clan," Isabella replied blandly.
This was all the money she had brought. It was originally meant for acquiring some Taboo Items, alchemy items, and Magic Potions for her clan at this auction. However, thanks to Baron’s persuasion, she hadn’t spent a single penny. Knowing the auction’s schedule, she was aware that besides the Red Dragon Reverse Scale, which had been announced long ago, there was likely nothing else the Beowulf Clan needed.
So, she might as well use the remaining money to take a gamble on this "Angel" with "Perfect Defilement." If she won, great. If not, it was no great loss.
The reason was just as she had told Baron, with the possible addition of a little gratitude for him saving her life back at Dragon Spear Plaza.
’But...’ Isabella’s phoenix-like eyes narrowed slightly as she looked at Freya, who was beside Baron.
’Why did he come to this auction with the Legitimate Daughter of Lancelot’s Family? Could it be that he’s really connected to that Dragon Witch? Or does the Lancelot daughter have some secret that would make Baron risk danger just to accompany her?’
’And one more thing...’
Isabella silently reached out to her Crow Demon circling above Berthelili Town. Through the crow’s eyes, she noticed something trembling faintly in the mountains not far away. If she recalled correctly, that was the direction of Traitor’s Cliff.
She wanted to send the Crow Demon farther out to investigate, but she found that as soon as it got too far, the Spiritual Power link between them thinned instantly, as if some special magnetic field in Berthelili was interfering with the Spiritual Power Exchange.
’Or is this also part of the setup to capture the Dragon Witch?’
Isabella felt a little uneasy. She looked at her younger sister, Lucy, who was still fiddling with her Compass and muttering, "How could it break at a time like this?" and asked her to perform a divination right there.
Although Lucy was a bit confused by her older sister’s request, she closed her eyes and began to chant under her breath while making calculations with her fingers.
It had to be said, in this state, she looked quite otherworldly. At least, Baron thought she was both divinely ethereal and... divinely endowed.
[Elsewhere.]
On the stage, the High Priest clearly hadn’t expected that Isabella, representing the Beowulf Clan, would also join this "War for the Angel."
After signaling the female host with his eyes, she snapped back to reality, picked up the gavel, and resumed the countdown.
"Seventy-five million, five hundred thousand!" Elvin raised his paddle, his voice somewhat listless.
This was only natural.
’I was supposed to pocket five million, and in an instant, it’s down by five hundred thousand. How could I not be pissed? And on top of that, I still have to give a cut of the remaining money to Camilla, who’s in on it, and a bit to Lian. I can’t give Lian too much, though, or that person will just go and donate it all to some charity foundation.’
’I’ve told them so many times that those charity foundations are just scams run by villains to profit off of good people, but they just won’t listen. As punishment, I just won’t give them a cut this time.’
Just as he was thinking this, he saw Jiang Ge beside him raise a paddle. "Seventy-six million!"
’This guy is really going to fight me to the end...’ Elvin raised his paddle. "Seventy-six million, five hundred thousand!"
As he said this, he gripped the Holy Scripture tightly in one hand, his eyes locked on Jiang Ge, his heart filled with rage.
’By my calculations, I’m out another one million British Pounds! If I let this bastard from the Holy Cross Association keep raising the price, I won’t make a single penny!’
He lowered his voice and said to Jiang Ge, "If I recall correctly, the Holy Cross Association only pays you a salary of a little over one hundred thousand British pounds a year, right? Continuing to raise the price like this benefits neither of us. Besides, even if you win this ’Angel,’ it won’t have much to do with you personally. I’ll give you three hundred thousand British pounds privately, no strings attached. How about you stop bidding?"
Jiang Ge ignored him and continued to raise his paddle. "Seventy-seven million."
’This guy is dead set on fighting me! He won’t even take three hundred thousand British Pounds! He’s a pure faith fanatic!’
The Cyan Phoenix Saint Elvin’s face twitched. He clenched his fists, then finally raised his paddle and said coldly, "Seventy-seven million, five hundred thousand."
If Elvin knew that all the bids after seventy-five million were coming from Faith Knight Jiang Ge’s personal savings, he would probably understand why a bribe of three hundred thousand British pounds couldn’t sway him.
The price shot up instantly with their back-and-forth bidding, quickly reaching Elvin’s latest offer of "seventy-nine million, five hundred thousand."
Elvin was numb to it now. His original five-million-pound profit had dwindled to just five hundred thousand. And from the looks of it, this red-haired bastard from the Holy Cross Association was going to bid again?
If the other party won the bid, the Holy Mechanism would save eighty million, but Elvin wouldn’t earn a single penny and would have to report a mission failure!
He was practically gnashing his teeth and no longer bothered to conceal his voice, though he kept it low. "Besides spreading their faith, what has the Holy Cross Association ever done that actually benefits their followers?"
"You might as well let the Holy Mechanism have this ’Angel.’ Our Inquisition is the one truly maintaining Order on the Inner Side!"
How dare he accuse the Holy Cross Association of inaction.
Though his faith was firm, Jiang Ge, who was getting heated after spending nearly his life’s savings for that faith, snorted coldly.
"If the Holy Mechanism had truly fulfilled its duties, then the Bloodless Baron Constantin would never have transformed into a Dragon Knight, killed Roy of the Hestia Family in front of everyone, kidnapped Dewey of the Frank Family and the eldest daughter of the Beowulf Clan, and then escaped on a Flying Dragon."
"That man didn’t match the intel at all! He’s a Bronze Tier Dragon Knight contracted to a Pure-blood Ancient Dragon that’s practically on the level of Gold!"
Elvin sneered, "And now he’s even pulled the Golden Dragon Spear from Dragon Spear Plaza. Even if you were to face him now, you wouldn’t necessarily come out on top."
"That’s not necessarily true," Jiang Ge also sneered. "A Contract Knight would be suppressed by a Contractor’s Tier, but my faith is like iron. The so-called Dragon Knight Constantine would have no advantage against me at all."
