Way of Overlord

Chapter 708: Husband and Wife

  • Next Chapter

Ayera sighed and she could not help but chuckles bitterly when she thinks about the comparison between the fate of her father and the fate of her husband

Her father had schemed and plotted for years simply just to gain a foothold in the Southern Great Steppe.

It took him almost all of his life just to gain the trust of the people of the Southern Great Steppe and made sure the tribe he had established did not become a target

It is because he was an outsider.

Look at the difference of how Brolgadhr tribe and the Utgard tribe is treated

Aeryon tribe was given exile. But if it was her tribe, if they become weak like Brolgadhr did in the past, they would surely not be given such a dignified ending

They would surely be torn apart like a deer being eaten by a pack of wolves.

There would be no such honourable or dignified ending.

What most people in their lifetime strive toward, Aeryon had achieved in one year.

Truly, her husband is one of a kind man.

And that kind of man is not someone easily controlled and easily manipulated or persuaded.

That gentleness is not false.

But that fierceness he shows in the battlefield is also not false. She sighed

Right now, the title of Overlord is well deserved on her husband

She is proud.

But she could not be happy.

Because even after almost a year, she did not feel like she is the wife of her husband

They still did not sleep with each other.

And if they do not sleep with each other, she could not bear him an heir. And without it, she felt insecure in her place as the Khatun of the tribe and as his wife.

It is not common for a chief to have only one wife. Even her father had a few woman on the side.

And some large tribe have dozens of wives.

Aeryon is young.

Most of them would be drowning in women breast and buttocks.

Is it because he is different from the rest of them?

Is the pleasure of conquering and subduing the tribe is better than wallowing in pleasure?

Maybe that is why he is different from the others?

However, that is not really the truth, some people could sleep with dozen of women and engage in all kind of debauchery and still achieve something great.

Then is it his personal choice?

Is he incapable of "standing up?" but that is also not the case.

Ayera even had to send her own maidservant to serve the Khan in bathing and she had reported that the Khan is healthy

When it is in the morning that thing "stands up"

Then does the Khan prefers men?

There are some chief that prefer to sleep with young men.

They of course have wives but they simply sleep with men like some kind of novelty

However that is also not the case.

He did not bring any young men to the tent or has he shown favour exceeding the grace of a ruler to his men

He would sleep in the tent of the military camp but never invited other men to sleep with him

Then is he some monk that studies some of those teachings from Yindu?

But that is clearly not it.

He eat meats and he drinks Ayrag and he did not have any of those monks’ behaviour

Then Ayera simply reached a conclusion.

To not sleep with her is not because of some sort of health problem, not because he likes men but simply because it is a personal choice.

And Ayera does not understand.

He clearly doesn’t hate her.

And there is affection no matter how small it was, there was affection

He himself already knows what she is and why she was there and so if there is a reason to hate, that would be it, but he did not hate her

Instead he even confide in her in some things.

He is cautious of her when it relates to the military but of other parts he would not hesitate to speak it to her, truly treating her like a life companion

However, he simply would not sleep with her

But that is not the only reason there is conflict between them

The conflict of sleeping with each other would not necessitates her forming her own private army and private retinue

It is nothing more than the fact that Mayeux was the one that hinders her from saving her father.

And now, there is the matter of Ogura.

She wanted to take back the Utgard tribe and avenge the primary reason of why her father had died.

Mayeux is simply hindering her.

And while she wanted to avenge this, she also knows that the primary culprit is none other than her own brother

So, she wanted to kill that a bastard.

But even then she was stopped

She was angry. And then she understood. But understanding it does not make her less angry

She sighed

And then she enter the tent

And a moment later the Khan appears in front of the tent and the servants opens up the curtain and he enters the tent

...

Husband and wife.

This kind of connection is different from blood born family.

Sometimes, it is chosen by the family, sometimes it is chosen by them

Different people have different understanding of this bond.

But everyone knows that this bond is a bond that unify two people.

And those who understood the wisdom of marriage are the ones that manage to make it a successful partnership

Marriage is not about making each other happy. Happiness , regardless of what one may think, rarely is about yourself

Happiness is a state of mind.

And this state of mind of happiness could only be achieved if there is a connection between people

People without connection might see themselves as free.

But they are nothing more than a kite with a broken string, easily manipulated, easily swayed.

Hence, it is always the lonely ones that always fall to darkness and the vices

Marriage is always and will always be about compromise.

Some people think one should not compromise at all.

Certain things are not to be compromised.

But in marriage, it is the little things, the little habits, that must be compromised about

It is a way to learn about people and to understand them.

Not one person.

But two person.

Butting heads, arguing and screaming and in the end, slowly try to understand the other person

Change but not too much.

Persevere but know how to give up.

Winning is not always winning and losing is not always losing.

It is a process of getting to know that person and in the end, learning to love this person that will change, that will test you and that person learning to love you and to understand you

However, a marriage could not last if one could not even change.

And if could not even compromise.

Knowing too much about each other is also not a good thing.

But is any of this relates to these two?

Their marriage is quite different from the marriage of peasant and those men and women of the world

The Khan enter the tent and the Khatun is now sitting on her seat. It is the seat of honour. Slightly far away from the edges of the tent, but not to the centre.

And there is a seat.

Draped in wolf pelts and there is carpets and there is lamp that has been shut off. It is a seat of honour and power but when Aeryon enters the position should be relinquished.

This is his land. And this place is his domain. Aeryon knew it and Ayera knew it.

But Aeryon did not insist on it and this only made Ayera frowns

The relationship between these two could not easily be explained and could not so easily be categorized like a normal marriage between two people

Ayera look at him and he looks at her and then he sighed

"I know what you are doing. Stop it." He paused for a second and then added

"There is still time. Restrain your men. I promise you your vengeance"

There was silence between them and then Ayera only scoff

"Heh!"

Aeryon face turns hard and his eyes narrows.

The two people look at each other

There is another silence.

She could scoff but she could not rebuke.

There is always a power dynamic between them.

Because they are not common husband and wife.

Their marriage form the very beginning is a political one.

And Ayera has never been the kind of woman that does not know how to shed blood. One might argue she is even more bloodthirsty than Aeryon

Aeryon heart is quite magnanimous. He could forgive his enemies. When he kills, he did not exceed what is supposed to be done

He knows every well, how Genghis Khan gain his empire.

But he also knows how hard it was for him to govern and make the people he governs prosper

He does make the Mongol prospers but anyone else other than Mongols did not fare well. In the beginning Genghis Khan gives land and slaves and wealth to all those who follows his army

He is generous and cruel all at the same time. But there was mobility in social status and there was mobility in wealth

But of course all of this happens during the early years of the formation of the dynasty.

Almost all of the beginning of a great dynasty is filled with vitality and life.

It is the same for Han, and the other dynasty that preceded it. those who founded the dynasty and the people that follow it are all full of ambition
