Chapter 917: The Realm of Ice Elves (16)

She plunged her dagger into the Sentinel’s core, twisting the blade as ghostly energy disrupted the construct’s soul-forged magic. The Sentinel froze mid-motion, its form flickering, before it collapsed into dust.

"That’s two down," she murmured before disappearing again.

Luna stood in the heart of the battlefield, her staff raised high as her Nightmare Projection expanded, distorting reality itself. The remaining Sentinels hesitated, their glowing visors flickering in confusion as phantasmal horrors surrounded them.

One Sentinel swung wildly at illusions of itself, striking nothing but air. Another stumbled, its mind ensnared by Mind Fog, unable to discern reality from nightmare.

With a sly smile, Luna unleashed Nightmare Bolt, striking the last conscious Sentinel. The ethereal energy corrupted its magic, turning its ice against itself. Frost spread unnaturally through its body, freezing its limbs solid until it crumbled into frozen debris.

"They’re afraid," she whispered. "We end them now."

The last Sentinel, half-melted from Bella’s internal combustion attack, staggered as Orion lunged in with a final, crushing downward strike, shattering its core. Findir, in one smooth motion, hurled a Void-coated dagger into the visor of the last standing ice elf, while Cy impaled another with a brutal spear thrust.

Bella’s flames roared one last time, burning away the lingering frost, as Aisa and Luna’s combined magic unraveled the last traces of the Sentinels’ enchantments.

Silence fell over the ravine for a brief moment. Then, the ice beneath them rumbled—a deeper, more primal force still waiting further down the path.

The fight was far from over.

The temperature plummeted further as the party advanced through the ravine, the very air around them turning thick with biting frost. From the mist, the Harbingers of Frost emerged—tall, wraith-like beings wrapped in tattered, ice-rimed cloaks. Their faces were obscured beneath jagged helms of permafrost, their gauntleted hands clutching long, curved blades of enchanted ice that shimmered with a deadly aura. They moved with unnatural grace, gliding over the frozen ground like specters, their very presence leeching warmth from the battlefield.

Orion barely had time to lift his sword before one of the Harbingers surged forward, its blade cutting through the air with a razor-thin arc of frost energy. He twisted his body just in time, the edge skimming past his chest plate and leaving a thin layer of ice in its wake. With a growl, Orion countered, swinging his greatsword in a powerful horizontal slash, but the Harbinger vanished in a swirl of icy mist, reappearing behind him. Sensing the attack, Orion pivoted, bringing his weapon up just in time to block the downward strike. The impact sent a numbing shock through his arms, but he gritted his teeth and retaliated with a savage shoulder check, knocking the wraith-like warrior back. "They’re fast! Stay on your toes!" he barked.

Findir used the momentum of the chaos to his advantage, his form flickering through the battle like a whisper of wind. He leapt over a sweeping strike, twisting mid-air and landing on the Harbinger’s outstretched blade for a split second before vaulting toward its chest. His daggers struck with pinpoint accuracy, aimed directly for the gaps in the icy armor. But the Harbinger twisted unnaturally, avoiding the blow as if anticipating it. Findir barely had time to react before a second Harbinger materialized behind him, its curved blade descending in a deathly arc. He activated Silent Flight, his body fading into a blur as he avoided the lethal slash by a hairbreadth, reappearing behind the wraith and burying his daggers into its back.

Cy charged forward, his Abyssal Spear crackling with dark energy as he lunged at one of the Harbingers engaging Orion. The creature moved to parry, but Cy’s brute strength was overwhelming—his spear crashed through the icy blade, shattering part of it. Not letting up, Cy drove his shoulder forward, slamming the Harbinger into the frozen rock wall. With a roar, he activated Wave of Darkness, sending a concussive blast of abyssal energy through the creature, causing its spectral form to flicker and destabilize. "They can’t take full physical form while phasing—hit them while they’re solid!" he shouted.

Bella stood firm in the midst of the fray, her Flame Robes blazing brighter against the oppressive cold. As a Harbinger glided toward her, its blade raised for a precise strike, she extended her hand and cast Flame Cage, sending spiraling tendrils of fire around it. The ice-wraith screeched, its mist-like form struggling against the consuming heat. But before it could break free, Bella spun her staff and unleashed Inferno Surge, a concentrated jet of fire that burst forth in a torrent, engulfing the Harbinger and melting it into nothingness. "Burn away, specter," she hissed.

Aisa moved like a ghost herself, phasing in and out of reality with her Ghost Step as she engaged two Harbingers at once. One slashed at her midsection, but she dissipated just before impact, reappearing above it. She flipped mid-air, landing softly behind them and plunging her Silent Blade into the nearest Harbinger’s spine. The second one turned and lashed out, but Aisa ducked, rolled forward, and with a flick of her wrist, sent a ghostly dagger flying into its visor. The creature recoiled, and she took advantage of its staggered state to deliver a series of rapid, precise strikes, each one eroding its spectral form further.

Luna, standing at the battlefield’s edge, raised her staff high, her Illusory Magic weaving into the air. The Harbingers hesitated as their own reflections twisted into nightmare forms, their frozen visages morphing into grotesque mockeries of themselves. Some recoiled, confused and disoriented by the Nightmare Projection Luna had cast across the battlefield. She narrowed her eyes and whispered an incantation, sending a pulse of Mind Fog surging into their midst, clouding their ability to perceive reality. With a flick of her wrist, she cast Nightmare Bolt, sending waves of dark energy ripping through their defenses, leaving them vulnerable to her allies’ onslaught.

The Harbingers, realizing they were losing control, began to summon spears of ice, launching them in rapid succession. Orion barely managed to deflect one aimed at his chest, while Bella conjured a Flame Shield, causing the projectiles to evaporate upon contact. Findir flipped backwards, landing on his hands before launching himself off the ground in a spiraling motion to avoid the barrage. Cy, instead of dodging, used Dark Tether to redirect a spear mid-air, sending it straight into the chest of an approaching Harbinger.

One of the Harbingers attempted to make a final, desperate lunge at Luna, sensing her influence in the battle. But before it could reach her, Aisa phased in front of it, her dagger meeting its blade in a burst of spectral energy. At that same moment, Findir appeared behind it, his daggers flashing as he slashed through its core, severing its form entirely.

The last of the Harbingers let out an eerie, unearthly wail before its form melted into the frozen winds, leaving only silence in its wake. But the ravine still stretched ahead, its unseen horrors waiting just beyond the frostbitten veil. The party barely had time to catch their breath before the next challenge loomed.

The ground beneath them trembled as a deep, rumbling roar echoed through the icy canyon. Shards of frozen rock cascaded from the jagged cliffs above. The ice elves fell back in reverence, their once-murderous fury replaced by a reverent stillness. Then, the glacier itself cracked apart, and from the abyss rose the Ravine Leviathan—a creature of ancient terror, its serpentine form stretching endlessly into the frost-laden sky. Its body was a fortress of frozen scales, each one jagged and glistening like massive spears of ice. Massive spines lined its ridged back, mist curling from its nostrils as it exhaled an arctic storm.

The party barely had time to react before the leviathan struck. It moved with impossible speed for a creature of its size, its colossal tail whipping through the air like a battering ram.

Orion planted his feet, shifting his stance wide, just as the tail came crashing toward him. With a roar, he activated Blood Sacrifice, channeling the pain of the battlefield into sheer, unrelenting might. His muscles bulged with unnatural power as he raised his blade in a two-handed grip, bringing it down in a diagonal arc to meet the beast’s strike. The force of the impact split the ice beneath him, sending jagged cracks outward as he absorbed the shock, redirecting it through his Battlefield Mastery to keep his balance.

The leviathan reared back, its glowing blue eyes narrowing, and it unleashed a torrent of ice breath, freezing everything in its path. Orion twisted his body, shifting his center of gravity, and then slammed his foot down, sending a shockwave of crimson energy bursting outward, shattering the encroaching frost before it could fully encapsulate him. He followed up with a sweeping arc of his blade, slicing through the thick ice fog to carve a deep gash along the beast’s side.

Findir vanished into the storm of ice and shadow, his form flickering in and out of existence as he activated Presence Erasure. While Orion held the Leviathan’s focus, Findir capitalized on the opening, zigzagging through the blizzard of flying debris with supernatural speed. He kicked off a protruding ledge of ice, launching himself toward the beast’s underbelly.
