Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 132: The Correct Door beneath the Tannery (II)

  • Next Chapter

2 stayed nearest the clerk station once they recognized the shelves. Their hands were stained with ink rather than tannery work. The older clerk kept looking back toward the holding corridor instead of at the door.

"You 2 worked the records?" Severin asked.

The older clerk swallowed. "They made us copy intake and buyer marks."

The younger clerk looked at the wounded woman. "Move them first. Please. You can ask me whatever you want after."

Different priorities. Good.

Severin looked at the 2 people who were hurt badly enough to matter now. They were conscious and breathing on their own.

"Can you stand?" he asked the man with blood darkening his side.

"If I have to."

"You don’t."

Severin looked at the injured woman. "You understand me?"

She nodded, jaw tight.

"I can move you directly to a treatment room in Greycross. You willing?"

Her eyes went to Nyra, then Alicia, then back to him. "Get me there."

The wounded man managed, "Same."

"Then we move you now."

Severin ordered the freight doors kept fully open. Alicia shifted the freed people toward the eastern edge where the air was cleaner. Nyra moved with them, cutting a cord from a man’s wrists and keeping the knife to herself.

Severin let black mist pass over his face again.

The membranes withdrew. His nostrils relaxed. Black mist thinned away until his features were his own again.

He crossed to the clear center of the receiving floor.

He had stood here, seen the floor, and cleared it himself. The center was safe enough to mark.

Severin prepared a new waypoint there.

The place fixed itself in his spatial awareness as a prepared point.

He crouched beside the wounded woman first.

"Treatment room is prepared. You go when I tell you."

"Send me."

He touched her forearm.

He invoked Waypoint Array.

Space tightened around her. She was under his hand, and then she was gone from the lower receiving bay.

The connection settled against the point he had prepared in Greycross. She had reached the treatment room.

The wounded man stared at the empty patch of floor.

"Shit."

Nyra glanced at him. "You volunteered."

"I know. Doesn’t mean I have to enjoy seeing it first."

That was fair.

Severin held out a hand. "Take my hand."

The man took it.

Waypoint Array pulled him from the tannery floor to the treatment-room point.

No scream. No blood left hanging in the air. Just an empty place where a wounded man had been.

Severin looked to the 2 clerks.

"I need the records that matter most and you 2 in Greycross. Willing?"

The younger clerk answered first. "If the others are going too."

"All of them. By road."

The older clerk stared at the open doors, then at the holding corridor. "We’re not leaving them here?"

"Nobody stays here."

His shoulders dropped a fraction. "Then I’m willing."

Before they moved, Severin pointed at the secured cashbox.

"You handled that?"

The older clerk nodded. "Sometimes. Never alone."

"Separate 180 Stellar Gold for the people here. Don’t count anything else yet."

The clerk blinked. "You don’t want the total?"

"Not while wounded people and records are waiting."

Nyra’s ears angled toward him.

The younger clerk went to the cashbox with the older clerk. Their hands were quick despite the shaking. They counted only what Severin had ordered, then pushed the separated coin toward him.

Severin took the pouch of 180 SG.

The rest stayed in the cashbox.

Only then did black mist spill across the remaining cashbox and tied packet of negotiable papers.

The dark swallowed it without touching the relief coin in his hand.

The records split next. The clerks chose a compact bundle of the most useful intake and buyer papers. Black mist took the remaining archive into the Void Vault by itself.

"Stay close," he told the clerks.

They did.

Waypoint Array took the 2 willing clerks and the compact records from the lower receiving floor to the prepared point in Greycross’s west records room.

Their absence opened a little more space on the hard floor.

Severin looked at the 19 people still with them. Some watched the place where the clerks had disappeared. Others wouldn’t look at it at all.

They had time. Wheels would do.

Severin caught Nyra’s eye. She came over.

Severin put the relief coin into her hands.

"Back to Copperglass. Hire 3 covered wagons with drivers. Pay from this. Bring back whatever’s left."

Nyra tested the pouch’s weight in her palm. "And if every driver suddenly discovers principles?"

"Pay enough to cure them. 3 are enough."

A dry breath escaped her. "Specific. I like it."

Alicia glanced from Nyra to the freed people. "Master, I’ll keep the room closed while she’s gone."

"Keep it shut."

Nyra tucked the pouch inside her cloak. "I’ll be quick."

She left by the freight ramp.

Severin turned back to the people they had freed.

"Anyone who can walk, sit near the east wall. If you feel worse, say it. Don’t prove anything."

A freed man with bruising along his cheek stared at him. "Who are you?"

"The reason you’re leaving."

That shut down the next question for now.

Alicia moved between the freight doors and the western processing side, never far enough to lose Severin from her view. She checked dropped weapons with her eyes rather than touching each weapon. The captors’ weapons were already separated in a clear pile.

Black mist covered the captors’ steel, hooks, and short blades, then drew the weapons into the Void Vault together. The same mist swept over the record chests, seal kit, holding keys, buyer-token blanks, and compact contract tools before taking them too.

The room slowly stopped being a working prison.

A freed man started crying without making a sound.

Severin left him alone.

By the time wheel noise returned above the ramp, the lower node was secure and the 19 stable people were ready to move.

Nyra appeared at the top of the freight ramp first, dust fresh on the hem of her cloak.

"3 wagons. 3 drivers. All suddenly cured of principles."

Severin glanced toward the yard above. "They stay upstairs."

"Already told them." Nyra hooked a thumb over her shoulder. "They’re very committed to not seeing anything that might shorten their lives."

Alicia looked toward the ramp. "Sensibly committed, Master."

Severin moved the freed people up in small groups. Alicia stayed below until the last of them reached the rear yard, then came up behind Severin.

The hired drivers waited beside their wagons with the fixed expressions of men who had accepted money to transport strangers and had decided curiosity was underpaid.

None of them saw the holding corridor.

The 19 freed people climbed into the covered wagons. Once they were inside and steady, the column moved.

Nyra rode near the lead wagon. Alicia stayed close to Severin.

Copperglass fell behind them.

The road to Greycross was quieter than the lower ward. Wheels creaked. A cough came from inside the second wagon, followed by another. A driver muttered at a horse that disliked the dark.

No pursuit came. Severin kept listening anyway.

The Perimeter Ward registered the column as it crossed inward through the west leaf of Greycross’s south gate. It gave Severin the location and direction of the crossing, nothing about the people moving through it. This time he was riding beside them.

Marienne stood inside the opened leaf with the matching key in hand.

Her eyes moved over the wagons, Nyra, Alicia, then Severin.

"You found the door."

"And what was behind it."

Marienne’s gaze hardened. "How many did you pull out?"

"23 freed. 2 already in Tressa’s room. 2 clerks and records are waiting for you. 19 here."

She looked at the covered wagons again. "And the men who kept them?"

"5. Alive. Stored."

Marienne raised an eyebrow.

"That’ll make testimony interesting."

"Later. Lock the gate."

She did.

Nyra dismounted and handed her the remaining relief coin.

"This is what’s left from 180 SG. Wagon hire came out of the same float."

Marienne took the pouch, opened it, and looked inside without counting it in the yard.

"Spend the rest tonight," she said. "Food, clothing, medicine, beds. None of it goes back into company money."

"Handle it."

Household staff took the 19 people inside in small groups while the 3 hired drivers kept their wagons in the south yard.

Severin crossed the inner court toward the east treatment room.

Tressa stood just inside the doorway with her sleeves pushed up and her hair tied back.

She looked tired, but the room belonged to her in a way the road never had.

"They’re breathing," she said before he could ask. "The man needed stitching. The woman needed pressure, warmth, and a bed. They’re stable enough that I can be annoyed at you now."

Severin looked past her at the occupied beds. "Save it."

"Saving it. There’s plenty." Tressa shifted her attention toward the yard. "Those are the rest?"

"19. Stable enough for road travel."

Tressa nodded. "Then don’t stack them in my room. Get them fed and give them somewhere they can shut a door. If anyone starts bleeding again or can’t keep their feet, bring them to me."

Severin glanced at the 2 patients behind her.

The wounded man from the tannery had enough color in his face to glare weakly at him.

"Teleporting still feels like shit," he muttered.

Tressa looked over her shoulder. "You can complain after you finish the water."

He drank.

Severin left her to it.

The manor stayed busy for the next stretch. Food went toward the freed people, spare rooms opened, and household runners carried Marienne’s relief coin back out into Greycross.

Later that night, Severin entered the west records room. The 2 freed clerks sat at the table with the compact records between them. Marienne had given the 2 men space instead of crowding them with household staff. Nyra stood near the window. Alicia took Severin’s right side as soon as he entered.

The relief pouch lay empty beside Marienne’s elbow. The last of the 180 SG had already gone to food, clothing, medicine, and beds.

Marienne tapped the table.

"Show me the rest."

Black mist rolled from Severin’s hand.

It spread over an empty patch of floor beside the table and released the remaining seizure from the Void Vault. The darkness peeled away, leaving the cashbox and tied paper bundle exactly where he’d left them.

The younger clerk flinched.

The other leaned forward despite himself.

Marienne didn’t flinch at all.

"You took out 180 before storing the rest?" she asked.

"Before anything else went in."

The older clerk nodded quickly. "We counted it. Only that amount."

The younger clerk added, "For the people from the pens. He wouldn’t let us stop to value the rest."

Marienne gave Severin a brief look. "You actually left the counting for me."

"Count."

"I started before you walked in." She opened the cashbox.

The room went quiet except for coin and paper.

Severin didn’t turn it into a ceremony. Marienne worked faster than anyone else in the room had reason to. The clerks answered only questions tied to things they had actually handled. When the older man started to guess at a buyer mark, Marienne stopped him with a raised finger.

"Know or don’t know. I can work with either. I can’t work with a guess dressed as memory."

He swallowed. "Don’t know."

"Good. Keep it that way."

Minutes later, she leaned back.

"I’m getting 540 SG out of what’s left."

Nyra rested her shoulder against the wall. "Plus the 180 already separated."

"Gross was 720," Marienne said. "We spent 180 on them tonight, which leaves 540. Company total is 4,096 SG."

Severin nodded and let Marienne close the line.

Black mist rose again, covered the 540 SG, and drew it into the Void Vault, separate from the company money already stored there.

Marienne had already shifted to the papers.

"Now the part I care about more."

"More than money?" Nyra asked.

Marienne looked offended. "Don’t repeat that outside this room."

The younger clerk let out a startled breath that became a small laugh.

It was the first laugh Severin had heard from either clerk.

Marienne sorted intake records, contract references, and buyer marks into small piles. Alicia split her attention between the door and the clerks. Nyra read over Marienne’s shoulder only when invited by a page being pushed her way.

Severin let them work.

Marienne stopped mid-sort. Her hand went still on a narrow recovered sheet.

"Severin, look at this."

Nyra straightened away from the wall.

He crossed to the table.

"What’s on it?"

Marienne turned the paper so he could read it.

A name interrupted the dull movement notation.

Rhyvara Kordren.

Below it, a profession.

Dragonkin Hunter.

And beneath that, a line that made the rest of the page matter.

Seeking Vardren Korr.

Nyra read it from the side and went very still.

Alicia’s attention came off the door.

"Master... this name?"

Severin read the 3 lines again.

Nothing beneath those lines said why she wanted Vardren, who she served, or how close she was.

’Something solid.’

Severin put 2 fingers on the paper.

"This stays separate."

Marienne nodded. "Already was."

Nyra looked at him. "You going to hunt the hunter?"

"Not until I know more."

Her brow rose.

Severin lifted the page.

"I’m going to find out what she reaches for next."
