Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 131: The Correct Door beneath the Tannery
The lower ward was already thinning toward night when Severin caught the house carriage before it turned back toward Greycross.
Tressa had followed him into the lower-ward street with her hair still tied back, but her expression had already shifted to work.
Severin stopped beside the carriage.
"Go back with him. East treatment room. Have it ready."
Tressa looked from him to Nyra, then to Alicia at his shoulder. Whatever question crossed her face died when she saw Nyra was still in road clothes.
"You’re expecting trouble."
"I’m expecting people. Trouble comes with them often enough."
Tressa huffed through her nose. "Fine. If you bring me someone half dead, try not to make them wait while you argue about who owns the hallway."
"I don’t argue about hallways."
"That’s my point." She caught the carriage rail and climbed in, then pointed at him from the open side. "Send them breathing."
The driver clicked his tongue, and the carriage rolled away.
Nyra watched the carriage go. "She didn’t ask how many."
"Because we don’t know."
"Yet." Nyra turned back toward the lower ward.
Alicia moved into place at Severin’s right. "We’ll know soon, Master."
"Show me the cart."
That ended it.
She took them south and west through the lower ward without wasting words. The streets narrowed. Tanneries and storehouses pressed closer together, their back walls dark against a sky that had lost most of its color. The smell changed first, leather, wet timber, old animal fat, smoke, and the sour edge that clung to a district built around hides.
Nyra slowed beside a public lane where the road opened just enough to see the tannery’s visible front.
"This is the place."
Severin stopped.
The front doors were still in view.
Nyra pointed farther along the road. "My source stood near that lamp post. The cart came from the east, passed this stretch, and went out of sight. Front threshold stayed visible. Same cart showed again later, empty."
"How far before it vanished?"
"Past the stable line. Not much farther."
Severin looked at the ground instead of the building.
Cart wheels had chewed the lane into overlapping grooves. Most were useless. Too many carts, too much old rain, too many boots.
Nyra crouched near the western edge and touched a compressed strip with 2 fingers.
"This track is fresher."
Severin followed the line.
The mark didn’t continue east with the obvious cart lane. It bent west where the tannery’s work side swallowed the view.
Alicia’s ears turned toward the bend.
"Master. Wheels went that way."
"Got it."
They moved.
Behind them, a faint pressure reached Severin through the Perimeter Ward. It marked an inbound crossing through the west leaf of Greycross’s south gate, then went quiet.
The timing fit Tressa’s carriage, but the Ward itself had given him no identity.
’Good.’
The pressure faded.
Nyra glanced back. "Ward?"
"South gate. Inbound."
She gave a short nod and kept walking.
The western cut narrowed beneath a heavy work-side overhang. Here the ground told a cleaner story. Iron rims had scored pale arcs through tannery grit. A wheel had bitten deeper where the lane began to slope.
Severin stopped at the lip.
The track descended.
It was no secret tunnel or magical door, just a freight ramp built where the public road couldn’t see it.
Nyra exhaled through her nose. "Well. That’s annoyingly ordinary."
Severin followed the descending wheel marks with his eyes. "Ordinary works."
Nyra nudged loose grit from the groove with her boot. "So does a knife. Doesn’t make it interesting."
Severin looked at her. "You wanted interesting?"
"I wanted the answer. I’ll survive the disappointment."
At the bottom of the recessed ramp stood 2 reinforced timber freight doors wide enough for the support cart.
Nyra glanced at the darkening sky beyond the overhang. "Close to the 3rd bell."
"Then we don’t waste it."
Severin looked back toward the bend they had just crossed. From the public sightline, the doors might as well have been in another district.
"Good work," he said.
Nyra’s eyes came to him. For an instant, the guarded set of her face loosened.
"My source gave me where the cart vanished. The ground did the rest."
Alicia closed the last handspan to Severin’s right shoulder.
"Nyra still brought Master to the right ground," she said.
Nyra looked at her. "That almost sounded generous."
"It was accurate."
"Careful. You’ll ruin your reputation."
Alicia’s tail flicked behind her and went still. "Master likes accuracy."
Severin reached for the freight-door bar.
"Save it for later."
Nyra and Alicia went quiet.
The bar lifted with a dull scrape.
GRRRAK.
The first door opened inward.
Bad air rolled out.
The irritation hit his eyes before the smell mattered, dry enough to make an ordinary man blink hard. Something fine hung in the light behind the opening. The second breath brought a sharper bite into his nose and throat.
Hazard Attunement caught the pattern before the discomfort became a distraction. The air moved more cleanly along the eastern freight lane while heavier particulate pooled toward the western processing side, where the irritation was strongest.
He didn’t need a name for it. He needed the cleaner lane.
Severin formed the next intent.
’Eyes and airway.’
[Noema: Moltstorm Eye-and-Airway Seals can protect your eyes and reduce airway exposure to mist or particulates, My Lord.]
Black mist slipped over Severin’s face.
It ate the lantern glow around his cheekbones for a heartbeat. Clear inner membranes drew across his eyes. His nostrils narrowed under a change he felt more than saw. The rest of him stayed the same.
Alicia watched his face without flinching.
"Master, your eyes changed."
"Works."
Nyra rubbed the side of her nose. "I’m going to continue disliking the air like a normal person."
"Stay on the east side."
"Already planned to."
Severin opened the second freight leaf.
Air stirred, but not enough.
He raised a hand toward the clearer outer lane and used Gust Vector.
WHUFF!
A compact burst of pressure punched through the opening and drove the hanging grit outward along the eastern side. Dust curled away from the threshold. The whole lower level didn’t clear. It didn’t need to. The first narrow path did.
"Inside. Now."
Alicia entered first at his right, low and quiet. Nyra followed behind his left shoulder, her hand near the utility knife she hadn’t drawn.
The lower receiving bay opened beyond the doors. Hard floor ran through the center. Bars cut off a holding corridor to the north; a clerk station and contract shelves crowded the south wall. Western storage disappeared into the worst of the haze.
Human voices stopped behind the north bars.
Someone swore near the south station.
Severin let Route Lattice open across what he could actually see. The clear center and north-side bars became the fastest line from his position. The western obstruction stayed useless.
A man near the clerk station snatched a short iron hook from the table and committed his weight forward.
Threat Vector flashed from the visible cue.
The attack line flashed clear, along with a response Severin could execute from where he stood.
Severin moved before the hook came up.
His left hand caught the man’s wrist. His right forearm struck above the elbow. The arm folded inward with a hard jolt.
CLANG!
The hook hit the floor.
A second man lunged from behind a post.
Alicia was already there.
"Alive," Severin said.
"Alive. Understood, Master."
She drove a shoulder into the man’s chest with enough control to take his feet without breaking him in half. He hit the floor on his back.
THUD!
Nyra kicked a dropped knife under the clerk table and cut right before a 3rd man could reach the barred corridor.
"Don’t be stupid," she snapped.
He was stupid.
He swung.
Nyra slipped outside the fist and buried the heel of her palm under his ribs. Breath left him in a broken grunt. Severin crossed the remaining distance, caught the man’s collar, and put him face-down beside the first.
The last 2 tried to run west.
Alicia took the nearer man at the knee and shoulder. Severin caught the other before he reached the processing racks.
The entire fight lasted less time than the first captor had needed to decide the hook was a good idea.
5 men breathed on the floor.
Nyra stripped a short knife from the last man while Alicia kicked the remaining loose weapons into a clear pile.
The lower bay went still.
Severin looked toward the holding corridor.
Faces stared back through the bars.
Too many.
"Alicia. Doors."
"On it, Master."
She took the freight side and the western approach.
"Nyra, take the keys and the holding corridor."
Nyra was already crouching by the man who had tried to reach it. "On him."
"Open it. Keep everyone east."
She pulled the ring free.
Severin turned to the captors.
The first man tried to roll onto an elbow.
"Don’t get up."
He spat blood and pushed again.
Severin put a boot between his shoulder blades until the resistance went out of him.
Then black mist poured down.
It swallowed the man’s outline, muffled his curse, and darkened the floor around him. Severin held the capture until body and soul had nowhere left to flee.
The man vanished into the black.

[Target: Human]
’Store.’
Black mist folded inward.
[Target: Human]
[Stored in Void Vault.]
The second captor saw it happen.
His face lost color. "What the fuck are you?"
"Busy."
He tried to crawl.
Severin caught his ankle, dragged him clear of the others, broke the remaining resistance, and let the black mist take him whole.
[Void Devour successful.]
[Target: Human]
Severin sent the second capture straight into storage. Black mist cinched shut around the man.
[Target: Human]
[Stored in Void Vault.]
The 3rd captor finally stopped moving. Too late.
Black mist covered him and swallowed him whole.
[Void Devour successful.]
[Target: Human]
Severin pushed the capture into the Vault. The darkness collapsed with him inside it.
[Target: Human]
[Stored in Void Vault.]
Alicia dragged the 4th away from the freight door by his belt and dropped him at Severin’s feet.
"He kept trying to reach the yard, Master."
"Not anymore."
The black mist rose, swallowed the man, and pulled him out of the room.
[Void Devour successful.]
[Target: Human]
The capture went into storage before the mist thinned.
[Target: Human]
[Stored in Void Vault.]
The last man had gone very still.
Nyra looked at him while she worked the holding-corridor lock. "You’ve finally learned something. Bad timing."
Severin took him last. Black mist rolled over the man’s body until there was nothing left on the floor.
[Void Devour successful.]
[Target: Human]
Severin stored the capture. The remaining mist folded down to nothing.
[Target: Human]
[Stored in Void Vault.]
The last notification faded. Severin was already looking toward the bars.
Nyra pulled the barred door open.
Nobody rushed her.
That told him almost as much as the smell did.
The first people out moved cautiously, watching Alicia, Severin, then the open freight doors. Several wore work clothes gone too long without proper washing. A man had dried blood down his sleeve. A woman supported another woman whose weight sagged heavily against her.
Severin counted while they came through.
