Chapter 336: Chapter 298: My Constitution Is Very Good

"So the situation has taken a turn for the worse?" Windsor asked, waiting until her younger daughter had calmed down.

"Of course it has. Why else would I be this furious?" Menela’s usual calm and incisive demeanor in front of others was gone, leaving only the incisiveness when she was with Windsor.

"You never give me a moment’s peace."

"CHEEP," Ah Mo chirped, as if to say, *That’s just how Little Mei is*. "CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP—" it continued, explaining, "We picked the little one up on our way here. She’s already been targeted, so it’s not safe to expose her."

"She can’t be exposed." Menela poured herself a glass of cold water and took a sip. "We don’t know if the Heavenly Beast Clan is looking for her. If they find her, she’ll be in danger."

"CHEEP CHEEP," Ah Mo chirped in agreement. "That’s exactly what we meant."

Menela asked, "Where is she now?"

CLICK—

Gu Ning pressed the shutter button and lowered her camera, staring in a daze at the pack of giant dogs before her. They were all snarling, baring their teeth and panting with their tongues lolling out.

’Who are they? Are they with Leo, or someone else?’

Gu Ning recognized most of the Beastmen on her team, but she still couldn’t identify all of them by their beast forms. She had never seen some of them transform, and others had very similar animal shapes.

’But judging by their menacing aura, they don’t seem to be on our side.’

’Are these the people who were just chasing us?’

Just as Gu Ning was wondering, a large creature that looked like a cat rushed forward. It was fluffy and roly-poly, and it started meow-growling at their vehicle.

Gu Ning looked at the huge, round face pressed up against the window and blinked. ’This cat is kind of... cute.’

The short, stubby tail behind it, paired with its plump body, made it look even more adorable.

For once, Gu Ning wasn’t frightened by the size of an unfamiliar beast. ’But it looks really angry,’ she thought. ’Its face is all scrunched up.’

"MROWL!" Flynn snarled at the vehicle, baring his fangs and brandishing his claws in warning.

’That nearly killed me. I almost didn’t catch them.’

’I haven’t had to run like that in forever. I’m no good at long distances to begin with. It’s like these guys were doing it on purpose just to get at me.’ He was fuming.

"MROW!" Flynn lifted a paw and slapped the car door.

’Get out of the car!’

’If I can’t have a peaceful winter, then nobody gets one!’

Gu Ning glanced at the angry cat, then at the pack of giant beasts blocking their path. ’Looks like we’re not going anywhere,’ she thought.

"It’s just a kitten. I’ll handle it," Belial said, about to get out.

Leighton hit the locks. "Handle what? Don’t be an idiot. Did you not see that pack of dogs behind him?"

"Then what do we do?" Belial asked. "We can’t just sit here and wait."

Mingxi spotted a red and green strip of cloth tied to the Pallas’s cat’s paw, nearly lost in its thick fur. "They’re from the Security Department," he said.

"I know one of them," Leighton said, watching a large, black German Shepherd approach.

Gu Ning turned her head to look at him. "You know them?"

Leighton replied, "Sort of."

Mingxi said grimly, "It’s them."

"This just got complicated." Leighton activated the in-car communicator to contact the other vehicles.

Gu Ning and Belial looked completely lost. Just then, the large cat banging on Gu Ning’s side of the car suddenly shifted back into his human form. He continued rapping on the window. "Out of the car! Security Department inspection!"

Gu Ning turned her head and was met with the sight of the cat-man’s naked human form.

’...’ *Never mind. I’m used to it.*

She silently pulled on her mask and checked the bladed claws on her gloves, preparing for any sudden developments.

The cat-man beside her was still knocking relentlessly on her window, and the other large dogs had now completely surrounded their vehicle.

Gu Ning’s view was blotted out again. Except for the naked Beastman to her side, all she could see were the massive heads of dogs.

They barked—WOOF WOOF WOOF—and nudged the car with their heads.

The vehicle rocked from the force, and a knot of tension formed in Gu Ning’s stomach.

"We’ve been intercepted by the Special Security Team," Barto’s voice crackled over the comms. "What’s the situation on your end?"

Leighton and Mingxi exchanged a look.

’Barto’s group is in an even worse spot.’

Gu Ning opened her terminal to check her distance from Alex. The icon showed he was less than twenty meters away.

’He’s right behind this pack of dogs.’

Though the car was surrounded by the dogs and she couldn’t see Alex, she felt a great sense of relief.

"AWOOOO—"

A deep wolf howl echoed through the pack of beasts. The dogs stopped pawing at the car and turned around.

A massive Black Wolf stood behind them like a mountain, blocking out the light.

"Who are you?" Flynn asked. Seeing that this wolf had an imposing presence but didn’t seem to be looking for a fight, he adopted a more conciliatory tone, ready to talk things out.

’He didn’t want to fight this group unless he absolutely had to.’

’Best to just stall them until the Special Security Team gets here to handle it. Either way, this group wasn’t getting away from him.’

Alex glanced at the SUV. Even though he couldn’t see inside, he knew Gu Ning was pressed against the window, watching him.

He let out a low call, communicating with the pack of canines.

"What’s he saying?" Flynn couldn’t understand, so he asked Brooke, the black German Shepherd beside him.

A look of hesitation appeared in Brooke’s eyes. He let out two barks in reply to Flynn.

Flynn ran his hands through his messy hair in frustration. "Shift back and use your words!"

Alex continued to communicate with Brooke.

Inside the car, Gu Ning and the two young lions were all pressed against the window, watching Alex communicate with the dogs.

"They seem pretty reasonable," Belial commented.

Gu Ning nodded in agreement. She had expected a fight, given the tense standoff and how angry that cat-man had looked. She was surprised the dogs had actually quieted down.

’It seemed her experience with Leo had given her some preconceived notions.’

Leighton said, "If they weren’t reasonable, you think you would’ve been able to eat five meals a day at their department headquarters?"

Belial froze for a second before he realized who this pack of dogs was.

"Who—who said anything about five meals a day?" Belial’s face instantly flushed red when he felt Gu Ning’s eyes on him. He scrambled to save face. "I could go five days on a single meal, my body can handle it! Really, Miss Gu Ning, I’m in great shape!"

Leighton twisted the knife. "You’d start begging for more if you missed even one of them."

Belial exploded. "That’s because their portions were tiny! Barely enough to feed a kitten! Besides, that was the food for our entire team. You ate it too, didn’t you?! Didn’t you?!"

"Shh! Shh." Gu Ning hissed, seeing the naked Beastman turn his head toward them. She quickly motioned for Belial to quiet down.

Mingxi jabbed him with an elbow.

Belial ground his back teeth and fell silent. He leaned his head closer to Gu Ning’s, joining her in watching the scene unfold outside.

After Alex said something more to the dogs, the large, black-and-tan dog in the lead shifted back into his human form.

Gu Ning’s gaze immediately snapped back to Alex.

Seeing that both men were naked, the two young lions had the strong urge to tell them to put some damn clothes on.

"It’s indecent," Belial muttered.

Mingxi glanced at the young female. He saw that she was staring, transfixed, at the Black Wolf, completely ignoring the two naked Beastmen.

’She really cares about him.’

Mingxi’s nose twitched, and he caught the scent of wolf on her as he came to this conclusion.

A moment later, the dogs suddenly backed away, leaving only the two Beastmen in their human forms standing by the car.

Alex strode toward Gu Ning.

Seeing this, Leighton activated the in-car comms. "Stall them on your end," he ordered.

Alex reached Gu Ning’s side of the car, lifted a paw, and tapped it gently, signaling for her to open the window.

"What is he going to do?" Belial whispered.

Mingxi, who had been watching their exchange intently, seemed to have figured it out. He frowned. "He wants Miss Gu Ning to speak with them."

Leighton thought for a moment and instantly understood Alex’s plan.

Gu Ning was taken aback by what Mingxi said. Based on her experience, Beastmen didn’t just ’talk’ to someone her size—they usually assumed she was a Mimic Mixed Species.

Alex let out a soft, reassuring call from just outside her door.

After thinking for a few seconds, Gu Ning prepared to lower the window.

’Things are different now, and so am I. The people around me are people I trust, people who are protecting me.’

Just then, Leighton suddenly leaned over, turned her face toward him, and pulled off her mask and hat. He then adjusted her scarf, pulling it up to cover the lower half of her face.

"There, that looks much more natural." Leighton smoothed her ruffled hair. "Little rabbit, you’re now a reporter from the Upper District, here to investigate the First Military District. So carry yourself with confidence. Don’t be afraid of them."

Gu Ning understood that everyone was counting on her. She straightened her spine, cleared her throat with a small cough, and lowered the window.

Alex’s muzzle poked inside. He gave her cheek a gentle nudge with the tip of his nose before pulling back to the side.

Flynn sauntered over, resting a hand on the top of the open window frame and leaning down slightly to peer inside.

Gu Ning raised a hand and gave him a cool, detached greeting. "Hello."

Flynn stared at the face before him for a full five seconds. His pupils slowly dilated, and his mouth fell open. "You... you... you..."

After sputtering out the three "you"s, Flynn fell over backward.

Gu Ning: "...?" ’What was that about? Is he trying to pull a scam?’
