Versatile System
Chapter 191: the very first allocation
The resource package activated at midday the day after registry. A sealed Guild courier delivered three crates and a data slate under formal escort. Trevor accepted the delivery at the door, dismissed the escort, and brought everything inside before the wards locked again.
The crates contained standardized mid-tier gear credits, essence stabilizers of higher purity than the provisional stock, thermal and toxin filter upgrades, and a set of unit-level emergency beacons keyed to the permanent Frostbound frequency. The data slate held the first available contract list reserved for newly locked units, along with the eastern training sector allocation that Iron Veil had tried to claim.
Trevor projected the full contents for the team.
“Resource package A is live. Credits cover gear refinement, stabilizers, and basic operational costs for the next thirty days. The eastern sector allocation is ours for training runs once the seventy-two-hour quiet period ends. Contract slate is limited but real. Three options currently open to us.”
He expanded the slate.
The first contract was a standard mid-tier clear in a stable C-rank dungeon on the city’s western edge. Payment was modest. Risk was low. It existed mainly to give new units operational history.
The second was a joint perimeter patrol along the outer wards with two other locked units. Payment was higher. Politics were heavier. Iron Veil was listed among the possible partners.
The third was a short-duration observation and recovery task inside a recently collapsed B-rank site. Payment sat between the other two. The site was still unstable. Residual monsters and environmental hazards remained active. The Guild wanted confirmation that the collapse had not opened deeper pathways.
Trevor closed the projection. ℯℯ𝑙.
“We do not take the joint patrol. Iron Veil has already shown their interest in testing us. Sharing a perimeter with them invites manufactured friction. The standard C-rank clear is safe and builds history, but it teaches us nothing we do not already know. The collapsed B-rank site carries real risk and real information. We take that one when the quiet period ends.”
Rhea nodded once. “Agreed.”
Lisa’s expression stayed sharp. “If the site is still unstable, the network will matter more than individual strength.”
“Correct,” Trevor said. “We treat it the same way we treated Blackroot Hollow and the Ice Forge. Formation holds. Link primary. No glory kills. We go in, confirm the Guild’s required data, and leave. Nothing more.”
Mia simply accepted the decision. Vespera’s silver eyes carried a thin edge of interest at the prospect of residual cold or shadow hazards. Seraphine remained still. Caroline and Elena exchanged a brief glance and settled into readiness. The network carried the collective acknowledgment without further discussion.
Trevor allocated the new stabilizers and filter upgrades immediately. Each member received a calibrated set. Armor seals were checked against the higher-grade materials. Beacons were synchronized to the permanent frequency. By late afternoon the unit’s baseline equipment sat one full tier above the provisional loadout they had carried into the Ice Forge.
The quiet period still had forty-eight hours remaining. Trevor kept the same controlled schedule: light internal refinement only, full medical checks, continuous network monitoring, no external contact beyond official channels. The residence stayed sealed. Two remained on watch at all times.
Night settled without incident. The wards registered no approaches. The private system logs remained clean. Trevor used the quiet hours to review the collapsed B-rank site parameters the Guild had released with the contract slate. The original dungeon had been a mixed earth-and-shadow environment. The collapse had sealed the main core but left three secondary chambers open and unstable. Residual stalkers and localized essence drains were confirmed. Deeper pathways were unconfirmed. That last detail was the real reason the Guild wanted eyes on the site.
Trevor closed the interface and settled into a light combat rest.
The first real operational decision had been made. The next pressure would arrive either from the contract itself or from the people still watching Frostbound from outside the lock.
Morning of the second day after registry brought the first unofficial contact since the hearing.
The outer wards registered a single figure at the boundary shortly after first light. The network flagged the presence immediately. Trevor rose, checked the identity through the provisional-to-permanent unit channel, and went to the door alone. The others stayed inside in formation readiness.
The visitor was not Guild and not Hunters. He wore the muted colors of a mid-tier information broker who specialized in unit politics. He did not attempt to cross the wards. He simply held out a sealed envelope and waited.
Trevor took it, dismissed the man with a look, and returned inside. The door sealed. He broke the seal in front of the team and projected the contents.
The message was short and unsigned, though the broker’s reputation made the source clear enough. It stated that Iron Veil had not accepted the arbitration result quietly. They were already discussing alternative pressure points, including selective contract interference and quiet outreach to other new units that might be willing to isolate Frostbound politically. The message also noted that the Hunters organization had received the formal denial and that Caroline’s father had begun internal discussions about whether to escalate through official arbitration or through less formal channels.
Trevor closed the projection.
“Information only. No action required yet. Iron Veil is probing for soft points. The Hunters organization is deciding how far they are willing to push. We do not react to rumors. We react to formal moves or direct threats. Until either appears we continue the current schedule.”
Caroline’s expression stayed level, but the network carried the familiar sharp spike of old pressure. Trevor met her eyes once.
“The lock holds. You stay here. If he moves outside official channels the network will register it and we will answer accordingly.”
She gave a single nod.
The rest of the day passed under the same controlled rhythm. Light refinement. Medical checks. Gear finalization against the new resource package. Continuous monitoring. No further external contact.
By evening the quiet period had less than thirty-six hours remaining. Trevor gathered the team in the main living area and projected the collapsed B-rank site layout one more time.
“When the quiet period ends we take the observation contract. Formation is the same one we used for Blackroot Hollow and the Ice Forge. Rhea and Lisa on point. Vespera and Seraphine on flanks. Mia and Caroline center with me. Elena rear and medical. Link primary. Verbal only if the network is disrupted. We confirm the Guild’s required data on residual threats and possible deeper pathways, then we extract. No clearing. No extended engagement. Questions?”
There were none.
The house settled into the final quiet hours before operational status fully activated. Two remained on watch. The others rested. The network stayed open at absolute saturation, every presence sharp, every mark still carrying the residual depth that had carried them through the Ice Forge.
Trevor remained in the main room after the others had withdrawn. He opened the private system interface one final time for the day.
Permanent designation: Frostbound.
Unit structure: locked.
Resource package A: active.
Selected contract: collapsed B-rank observation and recovery.
External pressures: Iron Veil quiet movement confirmed. Hunters organization internal discussion confirmed.
Time remaining until quiet period ends: thirty-four hours.
He dismissed the window.
The first allocation had been claimed. The first real contract had been chosen. The people who wanted pieces of the unit were already moving in the background.
The quiet would end soon.
When it did, Frostbound would step out of the sealed residence as a permanent locked unit for the first time.
Trevor already knew the Ice Forge had been only the first test.
The city itself would supply the next ones.
