Chapter 190: the registry

  • Next Chapter

Two hours before the scheduled time the residence was already sealed and quiet. Trevor stood at the front door in full restored gear. The seven women assembled behind him without a verbal call. The network carried the readiness pulse cleanly. Every presence was sharp. Every essence reserve sat at full. Every mark still burned with residual saturation from the long claim that had prepared them for the Ice Forge.

They left under the city’s pre-dawn wards. Standard formation held even on the open street. Rhea and Lisa ahead. Vespera and Seraphine on the flanks. Mia and Caroline close to Trevor. Elena at the rear. The walk to the Silver Guild complex took twenty-one minutes. The streets were nearly empty. Only a few other provisional units moved in the same direction, most of them looking tired or tense.

The registry hall was smaller than the examination arena but no less formal. Tiered seating rose on three sides. A raised platform dominated the center. Layered runes glowed under the floor. Lira Voss stood on the platform again, silver hair tied back, examiner’s coat open, data slate in one hand and a steaming cup in the other. She looked as bored as she had on the first day of Phase One.

Trevor’s unit took a position near the lower seating and waited.

Other locked units filled the remaining space in small clusters. Some watched Frostbound openly. Others pretended not to. The procedural probe that had been escalated to arbitration sat somewhere in the official queue, waiting its turn.

Lira raised her voice through the amplification runes.

“Final registry for provisional units that cleared Phase Two. You will be called by temporary designation. Permanent name will be assigned. Structure will lock under full Guild authority. Resource allocations activate immediately after. Arbitration requests will be heard in the same session if they have reached formal status. No speeches. No delays. Begin.”

A clerk called the first three units in rapid succession. Each received a permanent designation, signed the final documents, and stepped aside. The process was efficient and cold.

“Temporary designation Frostbound. Step forward.”

Trevor’s unit moved as one. They stopped at the base of the platform. Lira glanced at her slate, then at the seven women and Trevor, expression unchanged.

“Existing multi-mark network confirmed. Survival record: Ice Forge, sixty minutes, zero fatalities. Structure remains locked. Permanent designation assigned: Frostbound stands. Resource package A activates upon signature. Sign.”

Trevor signed first. The seven women signed after him without discussion. The clerk stamped the documents and handed over the permanent unit crest: a simple silver emblem set with a single pale crystal. The temporary status dissolved. The lock became permanent under full Guild authority.

Lira scrolled her slate.

“Arbitration request filed by Unit Iron Veil regarding resource priority. Both parties remain present. Approach the platform.”

An older unit of eight stepped forward from the opposite side of the hall. Their leader was a broad man in dark armor etched with older Guild marks. He looked at Trevor’s group once, then at Lira, and waited.

Lira’s voice stayed flat.

“Iron Veil claims priority on the eastern training sector allocation and the first available mid-tier contract slate. Frostbound’s survival record and network structure place them higher in the current provisional ranking. Iron Veil disputes the ranking on grounds of seniority. Speak.”

The leader of Iron Veil kept his tone measured.

“Seniority has weight. A new unit with no operational history should not leapfrog established teams on a single survival trial. We request the allocation be adjusted.”

Trevor answered through the network first, then aloud, voice even.

“The ranking is based on the Guild’s own metrics. Survival under S-rank conditions with zero fatalities outweighs seniority when the system is designed to reward results. We decline any adjustment.”

Lira looked at her slate for three seconds.

“Metrics stand. Request denied. Resource package A remains with Frostbound. Next.”

Iron Veil’s leader did not argue further. He simply nodded once, turned, and led his unit back to their seats. The network carried the quiet, shared knowledge that the first political probe had been turned aside without cost. That would not be the last.

The registry continued. Two more units received permanent designations. Then a clerk approached Lira with a secondary slate. She read it, expression still bored, and looked up.

“Additional matter. Hunters organization has filed a formal inquiry regarding member Caroline of Frostbound. Claim of prior assignment and incomplete internal records. The inquiry requests temporary suspension of her unit status pending review. Frostbound, respond.”

Caroline stepped forward half a pace. Trevor’s hand settled lightly at the small of her back through the network rather than physical touch. The link carried the single command: hold.

Trevor spoke.

“Caroline is a marked member of a locked Silver Guild unit under permanent registry. The system bond supersedes external organizational claims. Any incomplete records belonging to the Hunters organization are their internal matter. We decline suspension. If the Hunters organization wishes to pursue arbitration through official Guild channels they may file. Until then her status remains unchanged.”

Lira glanced at the secondary slate, then at Caroline, then back at Trevor.

“Guild policy supports completed system bonds over external prior claims when the unit is already locked. Inquiry noted. No suspension granted. Hunters organization may escalate through formal arbitration if they choose. Matter closed for this session.”

She scrolled again.

“Frostbound is released to full provisional operations. Report for contract slate review in seventy-two hours. Dismissed.”

Trevor’s unit turned and left the platform as a single body. They did not stop in the hall. They walked out under the morning sun and returned toward the residence in the same tight formation they had used for every other movement.

No one spoke until the front door sealed and the outer wards locked.

Trevor looked at each of them in turn.

“Designation is permanent. Structure is locked under full authority. First political probe turned. External inquiry from the Hunters organization noted and denied. Resource package activates today. We review the full contract slate when it arrives. Until the seventy-two-hour report we remain inside the city and out of ranked dungeons unless I authorize otherwise.”

Caroline exhaled once, quiet and controlled. “He will escalate.”

“Then he escalates through official channels or not at all,” Trevor said. “The lock holds either way.”

Rhea cracked her neck. “Iron Veil will not forget the ranking.”

“They are not required to forget. They are required to accept the metrics. If they push again we answer the same way.”

Mia simply nodded. Lisa’s expression stayed sharp and ready. Vespera’s silver eyes carried a thin edge of cold satisfaction. Seraphine remained still. Elena checked the network one more time and confirmed every presence still sat at full saturation.

Trevor opened the private system interface.

Permanent designation: Frostbound confirmed.

Unit structure: locked under full Guild authority.

Resource package A: active.

External pressures: Iron Veil procedural challenge denied. Hunters organization inquiry noted and denied.

Next mandatory report: seventy-two hours.

He dismissed the window.

The first day of permanent status had passed without blood. That would not last. Other units had watched the ranking decision. The Hunters organization had been told their claim carried no weight inside the Guild. Both would decide how hard they intended to push once the formal channels were exhausted.

Trevor settled the team into the same controlled recovery and refinement schedule they had held since the Ice Forge. Light internal work only. Full medical checks. Continuous network monitoring. No external contact beyond official Guild channels.

Night settled over the sealed residence. Two remained on watch. The others rested. The network stayed open at absolute saturation.

Trevor remained in the main room after the others had withdrawn. He reviewed the private logs one final time and then closed the interface.

The quiet would not hold.

Somewhere in the city Iron Veil was already discussing the next pressure point. Somewhere else Caroline’s father was receiving the formal denial and deciding whether to escalate through arbitration or through less official means. Somewhere deeper, the political machinery of the Silver Guild continued to turn, measuring the new locked unit called Frostbound and deciding what it was worth.

Trevor let the quiet of the wards settle around him.

The next fracture attempt would arrive soon.

He intended to meet it the same way they had met every other threat since the examination began.

As one.
