Vampire Progenitor System
Chapter 380: Split Field
The peace after the first three cells had not lasted more than an hour.
Lucian’s updated lattice grid was laid out across the command table in hard red lines. Two new signatures had taken the place on the far side of the capital rim, smaller than the first wave and much more precise. They did not charge the bridges or the tunnels. They were drifting along the damaged edge wards, probing where the defense had thinned after the initial fights.
"They are not trying to breach the core this time," Lucian said. "They are fishing for a soft route and waiting to see who comes to kill them."
Nyx studied the two moving marks. "So we do not send the whole board after one bait. We split. If they are scouts for a second wave, getting one team pinned and surrounded will fix it."
Aeloria nodded once. The burn on her shoulder had closed up, but she was still careful with her output. "I stay with Damaris and Lilith. If any cell is still aiming for recapture, the recovery halls remain the true prize. Lucian takes the palace net. The rest of you divide the field."
Lucifer wasted no time arguing the shape of it. "Nyx with me. We take the northern mark. Rhazor and Heron take the southern one. Zane and Anita remain as mobile support between both routes. No one chases beyond the outer rim without calling it in."
Rhazor cracked the knuckles of one scaled hand, residual heat rising up around the old wounds from the enclave. "Good. I’m tired of waiting for them to pick the street."
Heron only spun his spear once and turned towards the southern exit.
The field split.
Northern rim
Lucifer and Nyx found their mark in the ruined upper markets, half the sky-bridges collapsed during the first wave. The hunter cell there was smaller - only three figures - but they moved with a cleaner flow. They exploited the broken architecture they had studied and fell through holes in the floors, cut across leaning walls, never staying in an open line for a heavy strike to land clean.
"They’re better than the first set," Nyx said as she raced along a fractured beam beside Lucifer. "Less armor mass. More focus on speed and capture lines."
One of the three turned and threw a binding net of pale script across the gap. Lucifer tore through it with a burst of shadow and blood, but the delay was enough for the cell to break. Two went high towards the damaged clock tower. One cut low into the market alleys.
"I’ll take the pair," Lucifer said. "Pin the low one. We need at least one breathing."
Nyx’s smile was a thin one. "Alive. Not whole. Got it."
She dropped into the alleys in a fall of living darkness.
Lucifer hit the clock tower hard enough to shake dust from its broken crown. The two hunters above were ready for him. One carried a long law-blade built for cutting authority. The other held a set of short capture hooks designed to latch into a target’s core signature and drag it out of local space. The moment Lucifer came through the tower floor, both attacked together.
The blade scored a line across his forearm before blood constructs closed over the wound. The hooks nearly locked onto his shoulder. He answered by collapsing the distance, True Divine pressure crushing the air around both hunters so their next movements lagged by a fraction. That fraction was enough. He broke the blade-wielder’s guard with a raw forward strike and put the figure through the tower wall. The second hunter tried to open a recall path. Lucifer’s shadow sealed it shut, then drove the hunter down into the tower stairs in a controlled crash rather than a finishing kill.
"Live," he reminded himself through his teeth, and forced the next blow to cripple rather than end.
Below, Nyx’s fight ended in a hard wet sound and a short cry that cut off too quickly to be a victory scream from the enemy. A moment later her voice rose up through the broken floors. "Low one is dead. It tried to trigger a group recall and I cut the hand off with the script still in it. Do you have yours?"One down. One pinned," Lucifer called back. "Meet me on the tower stair."
Southern rim
Rhazor and Heron didn’t bother with quiet tracking.
Their cell had taken position near the old river gates, using the fog and the ruined water mills for cover. The moment Rhazor’s heat signature entered the street, the hunters moved to surround. There were four this time, heavier than the northern cell, built more for killing than capture.
Rhazor met them with open fire. The first exchange turned the river gate into a furnace. Two hunters came through the flames anyway, armor glowing, law-blades extended. Heron took both at an angle, spear sliding past one defense and into a joint, then reversing into the second hunter’s throat before the first had fully dropped.
"They learn," Heron said flatly as he ripped the spear free. "The next ones will not stand in fire lanes."
"Then we don’t give them a next line," Rhazor growled.
The remaining pair tried to disengage toward the outer fog. Rhazor’s wings snapped wide and he slammed down on their escape route hard enough to crack the stone dock under them. Heron finished the first. Rhazor’s clawed hand closed around the second hunter’s skull and crushed the helmet inward until the pale light inside went out.
Southern cell ended. No prisoners.
Heron looked north across the damaged rim, the residual battle signatures flaring in the distance. "Lucifer’s side is still moving. They may have better luck with a living one."
By the time Rhazor and Heron rejoined the northern route, Lucifer and Nyx already had their captive secured on the broken clock tower stair. The hunter’s armor was shattered down one side. One leg was ruined. The capture hooks had been stripped from its hands and crushed into scrap. Pale light still flickered weakly behind the cracked faceplate, enough to prove it was alive and aware.
Zane arrived with Anita a moment later, both of them bloodied from mobile support work along the middle wards. Anita took one look at the prisoner and nodded. "That’ll do. If these things can speak, this one still has the structure for it."
Nyx crouched beside the hunter, darkness coiled loosely around her fingers. "You’re going to answer questions. If you don’t, I’ll start removing the parts of you that make silence possible."
Lucifer stood over them, authority still heavy in the air. From the palace direction, Aeloria’s signal confirmed the recovery halls remained untouched. Lucian’s lattice showed no immediate fourth wave. For the moment, the split field had held.
"Bring it in," Lucifer said. "We extract every route, every order, and every name it knows before the being decides this failure is worth erasing from a distance."
The counter-hunt’s second move had been broken across two rims of the capital.
This time, one of the knives had been kept.
