Vampire Progenitor System
Chapter 379: Counter-Hunt
The outer districts had already gone up in flames when Lucifer struck the first street.
Not in the usual sense. The damage was clean, though the lines of destruction had been precise. Walls opened, patrol routes fell, and local defenders crumpled before forming a proper line - the hunters had not come as an army, but as separate cells, aiming to reach the palace core and recovery halls from different angles
"Three confirmed cell incursions into the rim," Lucian’s voice snapped across the emergency channel. "One working through the black market wards, one skirting the sky bridges... and one trying to run silent through the old blood tunnels under the third district. They are not random, but mapping a path to the deep halls."
"They want the recovery rooms," Aeloria said as she landed beside Lucifer on a cracked rooftop, starfire coiling around her hands in tight bands. "Damaris and Lilith first. You second if the path opens."
"Then we do not give them a path," Nyx’s darkness spilled like living ink down the side of the building.
The first cell found them before they could finish speaking.
Four figures in pale geometric armor came over the opposite roofline without sound, weapons not of forged steel, but hard lengths of white law and dull gold script - the same family of power as the enclave’s defenses, but shaped for killing in close streets rather than holding walls. The leader raised one arm and the air between the rooftops folded inwards like a throat closing,
Lucifer met the closing fold with a raw surge of True Divine pressure and broke it open. The shockwave tore tiles from both roofs and hurled the nearest hunter back into a chimney stack hard enough to crack the stone. The other three adjusted at once, spreading out, one cutting high, one low, one trying to loop behind Aeloria.
Nyx took the looping one. Living darkness snapped up like a noose and caught the hunter mid-step, crushing it inwards. The pale armor resisted for a heartbeat, then the joints failed and the figure came apart in a burst of pale light and black scrap.
Aeloria’s starfire lanced across the rooftop and pinned the high attacker against an open sky-bridge support. She did not spend freely. Every shot was short and true, and even so, the hunter’s armor drank part of the hit and answered with a mirrored beam that scorched a burning line across her shoulder.
Lucifer closed in on the remaining two.
He did not bother with measured techniques. The night of the enclave, his parents’ warning and the sight of his own streets being intruded all fed the same clean violence. Blood constructs formed along both his arms, shadow thickening under his feet. He hit the first hunter hard enough to drive the figure through the roof into the empty warehouse below, then dropped after it and finished the kill before the armor could fully reform.
The last of the rooftop cell tried to disengage towards the sky bridges, but Nyx cut that route off with a wall of darkness. Lucifer’s next strike ended it.
One cell down.
The channel flared again. Zane’s voice this time, rough and moving. "Second cell is in the sky bridges over the mercantile span. They just dropped an entire patrol line. Heron and I are intercepting. These things adapt fast. Do not give them the same angle twice."
Anita cut in, breath short. "Third cell is in the tunnels. They are quieter than the others. If they reach the under-palace routes, the recovery halls will be exposed from below."
Lucifer was already moving. "Aeloria, Nyx - with me to the tunnels. Lucian, pull a secondary lock around the recovery wing. No one in or out unless they carry our mark."
They crossed three districts at speed, the capital’s outer wards flashing with emergency signals below. Civilians had been pushed inward, local vampire forces holding corners and bridges where they could, but the hunters were not fighting for territory. They were cutting corridors.
The tunnel entrance under the third district was already compromised when they reached it. Two local guards lay dead at the mouth, armor split by the same pale weapons. The air coming up from the dark smelled of cold metal and old blood.
Nyx went in first, darkness spreading ahead as a sensing net. "Four signatures. Tight formation. Moving deep and fast."
"Then we run them down," Lucifer said.
The fight in the tunnels was uglier than the rooftop.
There was no open space to trade long-range force. The hunters used the narrow walls, folding law across the passage to create sudden dead ends and killing pockets. One nearly took Aeloria through the ribs before she burned a hole straight through the obstruction and the figure behind it. Another locked onto Nyx with a binding script trying to freeze her darkness in place. She tore free by unmaking the script itself, then drove the hunter into the tunnel wall hard enough to leave a crater of cracked stone and broken armor.
Lucifer took the front pair head-on.
The first one met him with a spear of white law aimed at his heart. He caught it on a blood-forged plate, wrenched it aside and answered with a point-blank pulse of True Divine density that caved the hunter’s chest inwards. The second tried to use the moment to slip past him towards the deeper route. Lucifer’s shadow snapped out, seized its leg and dragged it back into range. The finishing strike left nothing coherent enough to rise again.
When the tunnel went still, the only sound was water dripping somewhere in the dark and Aeloria’s tight breathing as she sealed the worst of the burn on her shoulder.
Nyx looked deeper along the passage. "That was the tunnel cell. No more signatures ahead."
Above them, the sky-bridge fight was still going.
By the time Lucifer’s group broke back to the surface and reached the mercantile span, Zane and Heron had already turned the second cell into a ruin of broken armor and collapsed bridge sections. Heron’s spear dripped pale residue, Zane’s coat torn open along one side with blood running freely, but he was standing.
"Four more," Zane said as Lucifer landed. "They fought like they had practiced in streets before. Not just open-field constructs. Someone trained them for cities."
Heron’s empty eyes stayed on the fading light in the broken armor. "They were not only here to kill. One tried to mark me with a recall script before it died. Capture tools, not just weapons."
Aeloria’s expression darkened. "Then the warning was exact. Kill where useful. Recapture where better."
Lucian’s voice returned on the channel, steadier now but still hard. "All three known cells are down. Outer districts are bleeding, but the core is sealed. Recovery halls untouched. That does not mean it is over. If this was a first probe in force, the next wave may come cleaner."
Lucifer stood on the broken edge of the sky bridge and looked out over the damaged rim of his capital. Smoke rose from more than one street, local forces already moving the wounded. The hunters had failed to reach the deep halls, but they had proven the being could put knives inside the sealed universe whenever it chose.
"Then we treat this as the opening move. Not the only one. Double the inner locks around my parents. Retune every outer lattice for small-cell intrusion. And start hunting for whatever path they used to enter. If they can open routes into our districts, we need those routes closed before the next cell arrives.
Nyx’s darkness slowly folded back into the veil around her shoulders. "The war just stopped being something we visit in the dark. It is in the streets now."
Aeloria sealed the last of her shoulder burn with a wince. "Good. Streets can be defended. As long as we do not pretend the next attack will look the same as this one."
Below them, the outer districts of the Vampire Realm bled under the morning light.
The counter-hunt had begun.
And the first knives had already proven they could reach home.
